"Oh man, I love this scene! The characters are awesome, but where is the background music that's completely unrelated to the scene? Everyone knows you gotta add in an overused sound clip to make a great scene even better!" - said nobody, ever. Whenever I hear it start up I move onto the next video, and this video is a prime example of a scene being ruined by music edited in after-the-fact. Only way it could be worse would be a song or sound bed with lyrics, but tiktok and yt shorts are loaded with videos edited by people that have terrible ideas, who think their additions to the original video is a great idea.

It seems like such a power move moment, but I was a big fan of this show, and I can tell which season it is by his date. This is when the wheels start falling off for Don Draper. He descends into a mire of emotional disorders, loses another wife, has a bitter divorce, again. The whole story arc of this man is that he faked his way into an industry and a marriage, womanized constantly, was creatively successful, and then became completely shattered as a human being. He's not admirable. He's sad as hell.

@Drew-sy2bn
@Drew-sy2bn 4 месяца назад
I've done marketing my entire life and if a client said that they had a guy on their team that had brilliant ideas instead of being close to it I'd say great let me talk to him and let's see if we can improve your marketing and get you the best result. If the guy was an idiot and his ideas were stupid and not effective well maybe we would test them and prove that they were no good or just say no his ideas didn't work. But what if the guy turns out to be one of the most brilliant copywriters or marketers of all time. Better to be open to talent than close-minded. Now if the client is difficult all the time I understand why he wanted to fire him. That's a different issue. But as far as seeing what this flyer writer has to offer a true creative wouldn't be afraid of the competition and maybe they would end up hiring the guy

There’s so much wrong with what you said, like objectively wrong. Joan selling her body is not a virtue, Don was always against it, she never apologized to making him his work was degraded for it either. Don was aware that jaguar was trying to get several over them from the get go, from the reduced commission fee structure and then the gutting of the national campaign; then Herb wants to have a kid look at his work (it should be clear that this is so the kid can steal dons ideas, herb however is retarded and does this in a way where he thinks telling don to take pointers from the kid instead of other way around, don wont be this wiser - which was great writing). And then not even a week after they fired jaguar, Don won Chevy. Did you even watch this show at all ?

I mean joan gave her body for money.The moment offer has been made partners gone to gray “we wont participate but we dont disagree either”.It should be direct refusal cause because of that single move entire company lost his bottom line.So client pushed them like rag doll. Like someone discussed this on reddit,the guy herb put will steal their ideas and rocket themselves as new agency.Then herb will directly kicked them out.And I disagree when people say he should fake accept to discuss with partners cause there was no exit strategy.They can’t pull new car company while they had jaguar.This was a loss in itself.

Actually, this whole show is about Don f’ing up over and over again. And this is just another example of it. People seem to forget that Don’s entire life is literally a front and deep down he’s just a really poor insecure kid. He’s not someone you’re supposed to aspire to be like.

This was a very satisfying scene. Don was itching to open a can of whoopass on that obscene excuse of a man, Herb. Ever since Don found out what Joan had to do for them to get the Jaguar account in the first place.
@lifeaid6275
@lifeaid6275 3 дня назад
Except he completely disregarded what Joan did for the company, went behind all the other partners' backs and threw the business out of the window because he couldn't suck up a little bit of disrespect from the client. This scene is selfish and reactionary, and marks the start of another spiral for Don. Joan loses so much respect for him after this
@happywanderer84
@happywanderer84 3 дня назад
@@lifeaid6275 Don lost a lot of respect for Joan after what she agreed to do just to get the Jaguar business. Don was a serial adulterer living a double life but he respected Joan and didn't at any point try to get into her bed. He treated her as an equal, because she was just as good as any man in that company. To lower herself like that to a grotesque man like Herb, really made Don lose respect for her. The wider point being made by the writers here is that Herb crossed the line and got what he wanted (Joan) yet he refused to stop there, Don saw this and ensured Herb wasn't going to treat him like Lee Garner Jr treated Roger Sterling. For Don it wasn't just about the money, the big name companies, it was also about respect and integrity for the work itself. Getting it on merit and keeping it cos you're better than others. Not because you cut corners and sell yourself to ugly men like Lee Garner and Herb
@lifeaid6275
@lifeaid6275 3 дня назад
@@happywanderer84 if it made him lose respect for her, it's only because Don saw himself in what she did (and as the show screams on so many occasions, he despises himself). He's a 'whorechild' after all - and his promiscuity is a primal and desperate way to seek the love he doesn't think he deserves but still seeks. Maybe you disagree, but if his opinion of Joan dipped because of that it's surely just projection? What right does a serial adulterer have to judge someone who (whilst single) sleeps with someone they find disgusting to benefit herself AND her colleagues? Don's filthy behaviour is purely for himself. He has no right to look down on her actions - and I actually don't think he does, anyway. I'm definitely not saying this is Don's lowest moment - his immediate thoughts are admirable and his response is badass. However, it's also a very selfish and thoughtless moment that shows he's putting his own ego before the colleagues and business he's dedicated almost a decade to. In this moment it's all about him, and realistically... how can Don look at Herb and feel he has so much moral high-ground? As Mathis says later, he's "just handsome" (I know that isn't true, but you can't deny that if Don looked like Herb his behaviour would NEVER be glamorised in the way it is). Don't get me wrong - Herb is definitely worse than Don, but Don is also an awful guy who wreaks destruction on (almost) anyone who gets close to him. So yeah, you rightfully call Herb an 'ugly man'... but Don is also an ugly man - he's just lucky enough to have found himself in a body that prevents people from seeing that (until they truly get to know him).
@happywanderer84
@happywanderer84 3 дня назад
@@lifeaid6275 I don't deny that Don (up until the final episode of the series) is an ugly man but in this moment he sees himself as moral and upstanding, whereas Herb and Joan are gross and corrupt. It's part of his double life with its double standards. Ultimately, Don and Joan both needed the illusion to be shattered. For a long time Joan thought she was better than the Peggy's of the office, and as the series went on she realised she was always going to be worth less than a man in that world, right up to the point that her wealthy boyfriend ditches her (or should I say she ditches him) because she wants to go into business herself. Don needed a fall from grace to break the cycle. Ultimately it was not this badass treatment of the despicable Herb that caused his downfall, as Don kept failing upwards for most of the 1960s, even as he cheated on his beautiful wives and led his own brother to his death by abandoning him. No, what caused Don's downfall was telling the truth during the Hershey's pitch. The writing is so brilliant on this show that it's easy to see storylines such as this one in black and white, to view them as singular moments which were bad or good. The truth is Don would not reach contentment and maturity without failing first, and Joan would not reach where she does without life lessons and embarrassment.

What he was trying to do was have his agency train a lackey to take over their ad work at a fraction of the cost. It's highly disrespectful. I offer two silos of business. 1, we do all the leg work and activation, and the other and at a considerably higher premium, train a clients in-house team members, knowing no matter how we train them, the synergy, acumen and experience will not be duplicated or matched.
