I concur. To my thinking, he not only gave them a more rock image, but he pulled out the best from the massive songwriting talent that kept the Eagles on the charts for so many years.
hotel is amazing acoustic piece plus electric plus great lyrical tale, ..see them dance in the courtyard sweet summer sweat some dance to remember some dance to forget.. ..she got the Mercedes Benz, she gotta lotta pretty pretty boys, she calls friends.. 🤷🏼
Don Felder is amazing. His book is a great read. It's sad that Henley and Frey drove him out, but the quest for money, power and control often ruin the most beautiful things.
God bless you Don ...you always elevate yourself above the Frey...( and the Henley) ....such a classy and talented guy ...thank you for your input to the Eagles ...they certainly wouldn't have been as successful without you ...I guess they didn't recognize the value of a team player
This interview was worth watching, in spite of Howard's incessant penchant to interrupt his subject. Time and again, he stepped on Felder's answers, just when Don was about to give us the "good stuff".
HOWARD SEEMS TO WANT TO KEEP THE CONVERSATION CONTOVERSIAL AND MOVING FOR INTEREST SAKE OF THE LISTENERS. BUT FINISHING ANOTHER'S SENTENCES AND INJECTING ANOTHER QUESTION BEFORE GIVING ONE TIME TO FULLY ANSWER IS TOTALLY ANNOYING, BUT IT ALSO IMPLIES THAT HOWARD HAS "CONTROL" ISSUES OR ADD. NEVERTHELESS HIS SHOWS DREW "FOOLS" LIKE MYSELF INTO THE WEB OF INTEREST.
. . .Howard I liked you on radio , but would NEVVVVVER PAY A cent to hear you NOWWWW ! ! ! SHADDDDDUP and let Don TALK ! ; ( READ ! ! ! , ' Heaven and HELL ' FELDERS BOOK ! ! GRRRRRRREAT. INFO ! ! ! ! ! ! ! . . .Dr K
@@imtheman4805 You must be a paid shill for Smith because that is totally false. Smith is nothing more than an ok substitute live in Felder's place. Accept no substitutes. Felder is superior in every respect and co-wrote several of the Eagles classics.
Yes , You are so on point with that , The More I listen to him now , The more I hate Frey and Henley ( as egotistic humans ) but Love their artistic writing !
Don Felder your book was incredible!! Its obvious Stern didnt read it, hes an idiot!! Your book was incredible!! And im soooo glad that you told your truth!!! I will FOREVER BE YOUR SUPPORTER!! I LOVE YOU, DON FELDER!!
Felder is an exemplar of the perfect phrases the perfect lines that it's unimaginable how else his choice of guitar lead lines could be played. A very thoughtful dude.
I agree, I think it’s because Stern is a serial interrupter and always tries to make the interview about him. In addition, at best, Sterns knowledge of the interviewee is sketchy. Don Felder however is a quality act.
Yes, he is holding his guitar... did he actually play at this interview or did Stern take up too much time?? Or maybe there was another part I missed ?
Feldner is a gentleman. I still have the utmost respect for the man. His revelations of his recollections of debauchery saddens me, because I thought he was stronger in morals. Ill get over my high expectations of my view of him. He will always be at the top of my most highly regarded guitarist, all around mucisicians singer, song writing stage perfoermers that I've been influenced by. Not so much in the morality faithful. God bless Don Feldner. Hes made a mark on countless lives. His music will live for a multitude of generations if not forever, and how Long is that?
Just my guess but I'd bet not only did Felder get a huge backpay settlement but he still gets paid to this day even though he's not in the band. The judge may have ruled that the LLC the Eagles created, where all members who signed that agreement had an equal share of the earnings, was never legally dissolved and still valid.
Yes he does, he was a full partner in his contract ...but was being shorted on ticket and memorability sales ! That's what got it all started Henley and Frye wasn't paying him his fair share of profits
@@adamdorgant9454 Don F. wrote in his book that he and Joe used to call Henley & Frey „The board of directors“ or simply „The Gods“ when they talked about the dictators 😁
Really agree with the comments regarding the constant interruptions by the interviewers spoiling the whole thing. Don was probably too polite to tell them to shut it
Howard starts out asking a question, explaining the question, then he answers his own question and Don Felder says "That's right." So why does Felder even have to show up?
Quite a few major rock and roll players from Gainesville. Steven Stills, Don Felder, Tom Petty, and definitely a few more. I lived there for undergrad and was amazed what a rural town it is at heart. Beautiful place and part of the "real south" unlike south Florida.
Wow loved the Eagles to death but I sure have a whole different slant on Frey and Henley .No wonder they took a 14 year vacation. We are here for us screw you
@@hoz49⁹ He settled, and you can bet your life he wouldn't have shorted himself just because he's a nice guy. Plus he's undoubtedly still collecting royalties from ASCAP.
In fairness, I've heard stories that Henley did call Felder up and ask him to play on his solo tours, and Felder turned them down, so we'll never know at this point. I do wish that Felder and Glenn had been able to at least patch it up before Glenn passed away.
I like this guy...and I love his playing....I'm glad he's cool....sometimes your favorite artists can really let you down when you listen to who they are when they're not playing....nice.
Stern is obviously a superior kind of asshole when it comes to interrupting, but his lady assistant is no slouch herself in that department. They're clearly a well-matched couple.
What an amazing group of stories. Stern does talk over Felder too much. Can't go back 15 years and redo this interview. Hotel California wasn't just a hit, it hit at the pinnacle of, and helped make, the greatest of California mythology. And Henley did write some fantastic lyrics to a genius guitar part. And also played some amazing drums as well.
It speaks volumes of the hell Frey and Henley unleashed in the band that Leaden and Meisner would give up full partnerships in The Eagles to get the hell out of there.
I'm going to guess that Glenn Frey and Don Henley took more of the profits but also had to pay out more in bills and such. They probably wanted to do that so they were responsible of the business end of the band so everyone would get along and egos wouldn't keep going. The other guys agreed but Don Felder. He wanted everyone to be 100% equal. Unfortunately (even Don Henley has said) that it's Glenn's band, its always been Glenn's band.
we all know hollywood is full of world class A holes. this was about 20 years ago in a poll of waiters waitresses and bartenders in hollywood/LA glen frey and don henley were voted the two biggest A holes to deal with. now that takes being an A hole to a different level
You obviously missed the part where Felder was the business and financial manager of the band but was not allowed to perform as such by Frey and Henley. They withheld financial info and cheated the other members out of what was rightfully theirs. Guess all you want but the truth is out there. @@aaronwestfall751
I am a Felder fan but they made 3 incredible albums before he joined so that’s not true. Don’t you like Desperado, Take it Easy, Peaceful Easy Feeling, The Best of My Love, etc
Felder really toughened up the Eagles sound. Before Felder, the Eagles were sharing bills with Black Oak Arkansas and the Stampeders. After he joined, they were selling out arenas. He turned them into the supergroup they became.
Felder is such an amazing, tasteful musician. His contributions to the Eagles shouldn’t be overlooked his playing was so melodic and memorable. His solo in One Of These Nights is one of my favorite guitar moments ever
@@2v_5r84 Incredible? Not really. They were good, solid records but not incredible. On the Border is very underrated. Felder actually played on Already Gone and the slide guitar on Good Day in Hell.
These were the best times on the show. This era. The interviews of this era were better. Nowadays, it's Gwyneth Paltrow and other celebrities that stern fans don't care about.
In the midst of Don providing pertinent and fascinating information that answers the question we’re all wondering about, Howard interrupts to ask him about getting laid. Ugh.
As much as I love Felder and admire his vast talents, some of his comments should be taken with a whole heap of salt. When he tries to say that Henley's ego didn't like the spotlight being shined on the other members, that I found a bit suspect. I have always been a huge Eagles fan and all the members hold a special place to me. When I was a kid, I went to see them on the Long Run tour. I had seats in the first row and had rented a huge professional camera with a telescopic lens. Early in the show, Felder had noticed the camera and started playing to it. He would get into great Guitar God poses, which I was ecstatic about. But as the show went on, I wanted pictures of the other guys, but when I would aim the camera, Felder would deliberately step into the shot and ruin the photo. He would do this for every member downstage from him, Frey and Schmit. When I tried to get a photo of Henley on the drums, Felder would plant himself in my view. Even Walsh, who was the closest Eagle to my seat, when I would aim the camera at him, Felder would adopt the most outlandish pose to get the attention back on him. After the concert, my friend and I both commented about what a huge ego he had, so his words here ring more than a little false. And the next might seem callous, but let's consider numbers. Again, I loved all the seven Eagles equally, but after the break up of the band/leaving the band, Leading, Meisner, Schmit and Felder output of music barely registered as a blip. Walsh, who was famous before joining, had a couple of notable songs. Frey had a handful of genuine hits, "The Heat Is On" and "You Belong To The Night," but Henley was the powerhouse of hit song making, "Dirty Laundry," "The Boys of Summer," "All She Wants To Do Is Dance," "The Heart Of The Matter," etc. At least three quarters of the Eagles hits had Henley's name on it while only one hit had Felder's, along with a couple of great album tracks, but that one hit that Felder had also had Henley's name on it. In fact, what Felder forgot to mention that when Frey and Henley first heard "Mexican Reggae," as it was known and asked Felder to expound on it, Felder had forgotten the tune and had to relearn it from listening to his tape. Again, I admire Felder so much for his musical talents, but....
Don has NEVER gotten his just rewards regarding his musical ability. He is fantastic in person . Just seems like a class act every time I seen him. Give Frey and Henley credit that was probably their smartest move ever. Love the Eagles but they were BETTER with Don in the band . 😊Is there anyone left on the planet that hasn’t listened to Hotel California solo of Walsh and Henley, Best ever … run through your mind for days after you hear any of it . Keep on Trucking Don !!!
Hotel California is the song that separates them. It even makes the other songs they wrote earlier more definable. It makes the group somewhat ”devilish”. It brings everything together in some sense. Even King of Hollywood would never had been written without it. It has the aura of another side of California, the ”dark side”. Great song, great lyrics. Kudos to Felder AND Frey+Henley for writing it. //Niclas from 🇸🇪
I don't know when this show was taped, but Don Felder looks amazing. I got to say, I think he's my favorite guitarist. Not saying he's the best, or most talented, although he is abundantly gifted, but I think I would rather listen to his guitar playing over all others. Please don't tell me about Joe Pass, Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Van Halen, Joe Satriani, etc. He's just my personal favorite; totally subjective. At least today. 😁
Felder made the eagles, they hated him for creating hotel california...their best song. Every thing he did made them better. His guitar playing is sublime. He would even write parts for lazy Joe Walsh. And the parts he wrote are the best Walsh parts.
Just sad to listen too, the eagles are one of the greatest bands in history, and I’m such a fan of Henley and Frey but felder, leaden and meisner all major players in that band all pushed out makes you think
Oh god, Kansas City! It's been a long time since I've been there but I saw more drugs in that town than I've ever seen anywhere else and I lived in California.
Great interview. Felder's "Heavy Metal" is so primo. I've always boycotted The Eagles because of their copy protection police of their songs. Now I have plenty more reasons to avoid them.
