That interview could have gone for 8 hours and I'd still be watching. Captivating. I admire the hell out of Sammy. Fame and fortune and still the most real, down to earth guy that you could ever meet.
This guys is what you call a WINNER!..a real winner! The “little guy” inside him gave him the drive to create anything he set his mind to. Congrats Mr. Hagar!..congrats!
Sammy is a true icon. He's done everything and he's still standing, running. He's even heading out on tour this spring. Really an amazing guy that should be studied on how to treat others and yourself.
This interview was from a few years ago, Sammy is 76 this year and STILL GREAT, STILL ON STAGE. One of the greatest all time singers and one of the smartest men in the music business.
you think a whiny voiced lovey dovey singer , is one of the best vocalists ever ?????......You ever heard of Devin Townsend, Mike Patton, Glenn Hughes, Roger Daltrey....now those guys , blow that hack away !!!
@1rwjwith, I read somewhere that the main thing that sunk Ed and Sammy’s relationship was Sammy’s side businesses and interest. Idk how much truth there is to that of course. I think the band had two great front men. Dave was the right guy to launch the band, and Sammy was the right guy to replace him.
Wow, what a down to Earth guy, just a positive attitude on life, not taking anything for granted while learning from mistakes. Theres a reason I always liked him from the time I was 15 years old, Im 61 now
I love Sammy! ♥️ He’s not only talented in many different ways musically, he’s also a highly intelligent guy. I’ve read his books & followed his career through the years. I really admire him! Love ya Sam!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was listening to Sammy in 1984/1985, because I was a teenager . His lyrics and inspiration got me through lots of painful heartbreak. We were always at the Buffalo River in Arkansas, with cassette players & headphones.
I ran into Samuel once at a gas station, while refueling. It was an honor to meet him. Oust have talked with him for maybe a half hour. He has a very positive uplifting personality. I wish I could have met him at this restaurant in St Louis that following weekend. I acted like he was just somone that looked like him, because I didn't want anyone to bother him. Samuel, if you see this, man, it was cool meeting you. 🦅🇺🇲
😆 Sammy b the man but he's an alcoholic as much as Eddie ever was omg he has his own tequila and posts video's DAILY of drinking heavy alcohol so gotta love him but kiss ass Sammy
The band became better with Sammy. They sold more albums and got a larger audience because the music included a wider range of styles. Dave was all about Dave. He left because he thought he had a solo deal to include acting that never happened.
I've always loved the red rocker, Montrose, solo, and when succeeded DLR in my favorite band VH. After watching this video, the love for him and his music has only deepened..thank u Sammy for blessing the world with ur music n ur spirit!
To Sammy you have to be the most honest down to earth interview i have ever seen keep being the real you!!! To Dan Rather you really know how to do a interview all the best to you!!!!!
I know one thing - Geddy Lee is out there straight up killing it on his live presentations tour he’s been doing for his new memoir, My Effin Life. Each night he has a surprise guest, and the most notable ones so far been Paul Rudd, Jack Black, and Matt Stone (South Park). The others have been various radio people and the bass player from Nirvana, who is kind of a strange pick. I would say that Dave Grohl sent Geddy his way But yeah, it’s great seeing Geddy in that kind of setting where he tells tales of opening for KISS, their stints with drugs, and other things that RUSH was never known for
@@tacomaman6212 it has to do with with luring in dudes named tacomamma for purposes of making them question what it has to do with the video… that way I can tell those named tacomomma “it doesn’t matter”
Great interview i love how mature and humble Sammy has become. Way to go Sammy and Dan you rock as well. Thanks for the chance to see who these people really are behind there famous life styles. Keep these interviews coming excellent work. SCBond
I just watched the interview, what a classy guy, Great musician. Very humble, and so down to earth!! Thanks for being you Sammy, your a inspiration!! I'm 64 and still A HUGE ROCK N ROLL FAN!! Keep ROCKEN SAMMY!!! ❤
I was blessed to see the original Montrose with Sammy at Winterland. I believe it was UFO and Journey, both great. When Montrose came out, that energy was so exciting, it's one of the highlights of my entire life and I know besides Ronnie's magic on guitar, Sammy brought it too, and I can see that's who he's been his whole life. Like he said 💯 % on stage. I cherish that memory and experience. Then years later I saw him at the Warfield Theater in S.F with H.S.A.S- Neal Schon and Michael Shrieve, unreal. Again outstanding 👏 everything he touches- its the Midas touch, gold. Thanks Red! 🎉 music 🎶 food 😋 cars 🚗 tequila! Charity work. OK 👍
Yup, UFO and Journey. I was there too. Grew up in the Bay Area, San Mateo, Concord, Dublin. I recently saw a pair of Tix to that show on eBay. Original. price was $6.00 Don't recall how much they were on eBay. It brought back memories though.
I've been a Sammy fan since the late 70's. Always loved his voice and his personality. Such a cool dude. That game where people ask you who you'd want to have dinner with dead or alive, Sammy is on my list. Great interview.
If i could hang with any artist it would be Sammy because he's down to earth , not cocky or arrogant, just down to earth , not fake ,and doesn't act like a 12 year old saying f bombs every other word and acting like everybody is lucky to meet him , great guy .
Worse thing Van Halen ever did was fire Sammy. The band was never the same and Sammy took a great band to a whole different level and made Eddie a better guitarist. Sure diamond dave had his run in the early years and the first van halen album will always be my favorite but Hagar took Van Halen to the Stars 👍
I like that Dan Rather is interviewing everyone. It’s interesting to watch the “rockstar” interviews. Dan asked about sex, and wanted to know the insider details that the general public doesn’t know. 😂 I was in a touring band in the ‘80s. Dan has no idea what that life is like. 😂 I can tell Dan got shy all of a sudden when Sammy got into details. Very funny. In the ‘80s the girls were everywhere if you were in a band. I’m sure those of you that toured back then know all about it. Just the way it was. Got to say I love that Sammy had expensive wines on his rider then kept them to build a world class cellar, instead of wasting them like most rockstars would have done. Love it. That’s smart.
Indeed. A life well lived, a survivor among rockstars some others do come to mind: Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Bono, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, John Mellencamp and Bob Seger.
That was a very special interview Dan.Thank You.Sammy you are one of the greatest down to earth giving humble human beings not to mention one of the best vocalist of all time.God Bless Both of You and Your Families.
As Sammy says he raves on when on stage and that's the Sammy I have seen in the past, it's nice to see him sit down and listen for a change, enjoyed this. :)
Thank you so much for sharing! What a guy! I always loved Sammy as a solo artist, but with Van Halen they reinvented the wheel of creating great albums (not Hit singles as many bands do or chase). Tons of stuff I didn't know from his personal life...wow! Refreshing! Thank you again for sharing it!!!!
I tuned 16 in the fall of 1985 & one of the most vivid memories of that time was when the lead-singer in my high school band went to Farm Aid & saw Sammy play with Eddie for the first time. We were all pretty excited to hear the next Van Halen album with Sammy singing, and when it dropped mid-winter of ‘86 it didn’t disappoint.
@@dr.loomis4221 There was snow on the ground when “Love walks in” came-out … we call that mid-winter in Illinois. I was busy banging the prom-Queen back then (Also 100% true), so I may not know exact dates as much as someone like you, who probably hung around the house beating-off. If you ever wonder why you’re alone (aside from being an unfuckable chud) it’s probably because of that borderline personality-disorder of your’s. I mean, the DR from “Halloween”? Psycho much?
I have more respect for Sammy and his time with VH now more than ever. I didn't like Van Hagar's music after Roth but the more I learn about this bloke, the more I respect his motif, energy and outlook on life. He really he blessed and grateful for all of his success.
I couldn't agree more with you. I preferred early Van Halen, but we can't argue with the success they had with Hagar. I also believe he (& Michael Anthony) were the nicest members of the band.
Even if he lies ? I've read his book and he never told everything that happened to him and used his book to unfairly crucify the Van Halen brothers . He never tells you how Konami used his Can't Drive 55 song in their RIDGE RACER 4 videogame TV commercial BUT he crucified the Halen Bros for selling songs for TV commercials . He finger points at the Halen Bros for only being about making money . Who's doing a cash-grab rip-off elevator music version FAKE tribute of Eddie Van Halen . And contrary to what Dan Rather says in this video , Sam can't sell albums like he did before and after he joined Van Halen .
@@user-rt9zq8rs9k geez, get the knives out. Few are moving many actual units in any format these days. And they cut Sammy loose in a pretty down period of their lives. And they paid hard for it for probably a decade.
Say what you want, I love both Van Halen's for different reasons. They both are a status of my childhood, teen years, young adult years. But I will say this, above all else, of all the versions of Van Halen, and of all of the music from both versions, one thing can be said for the Sammy version, is that they wrote and recorded, "Humans Being" in 1995. That has to be one of the single most coolest songs the 90s and the Van Halens, had given us. Something about how Eddie made that "tornado" guitar solo, going from a light storm to chaos and Sammy's hard vocals and just the entire sound and vibration of that song was an exciting time for me. Of course, with that being said, the David years did give us one of the greatest rock albums in history - Fair Warning in 1981. So there's that.
After a 10 hour drive from north of Germany back to Stockholm. My wife and the children went to bed. It was in july or august. A warm night. So I put on the new album of Van Halen. The week before we visited Amsterdam. So I bought some grams of the local lets say tobacco. So I stopped "Poundcake" and went to my car and picked up my buyings from Amsterdam, it was around 1 in the night. Sat down outside with earphones after inhaling and listen to the whole record 3 times. Totally stunned. I still feel that its a masterpiece. I have the same happines and joy Sammy has. I am 63. I have 3 daughters. Soon the second grandchild comes. As Sammy I do not like to be drunk. Life is about growing and loving.
Sammy's the best. I saw him on the Sammy and Dave tour and he had amazing stage presence. Dave was great at getting people to cheer for him, but Sammy took everyone along for the ride.
Great interview as always Mr. Rather. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about Mr. Haggar and how really genuine and humble person that he really is. Even learnred more about Vam Halen breaking up and what actually happened with Eddie. And answering aome questions i had. Recently found out after watching Howard Stern show. Joe Satriani is filling in on a possible Eddie Van Halen tribute tour. I will definitely going to see them if everyone is able to agree and make it happen. Much love from New Orleans
Thank you, Sammy, for your honesty, your heart and for being who you are. You're a precious guy and I love you for having the courage to just be real in front of us all. Thank you for pouring out the truth. God bless you and your family.
It takes so much guts to be publicly open and vulnerable. Honest, humble and self introspective. Thanks Sammy for all that you’ve given the world. I’m going to hug my kids tomorrow another time, encourage them another time, show them extra love, and that’s on you.
I just fell upon this interview. I knew little to nothing of this man. I am impressed! This is an great interview! It's inspiring. I especially like the drive with, "uncle Dan" and, ... Sharing the wealth with those less fortunate. Carry on, Mr Hagar!
I LOVE those first 6 albums. Edward changed the trajectory of my life and I am a musician today because of him. But Sammy really reinvigorated the band and especially Ed. 5150 stands right up with the DLR albums and I personally think it’s got some of Edward’s best guitar playing ever. The intro riff to Summer Nights and the intro riff to 5150 are absolutely amazing. And that tour was probably their best one. Seeing them in ‘86 is a highlight of my youth. And the Live Without A Net VHS cassette perfectly encapsulates the band during that time; just pure joy and just kicking ass on all levels. When Carnal Knowledge and Live: Right Here Right Now came out, you could tell the bloom was coming off the rose. Ed’s addiction was really getting a hold of him. And as someone in recovery I burned a lot of bridges and hurt a lot of people during those dark days.
Great interview with Sammy, Dan, his new song “Inner Child” brought me to tears, I’m trying very late in life to start singing and it’s EXACTLY what I want to do…shine my Inner Child for the World 🌎‼️❤️💯
I love Sammy Hagar the person that he is being rich and giving back to the community and people in need because he loves to help people his talent himself all round amazing person!!♥️ Love you Sammy!!
This was really great and i learned alot of things here, dan rather really dug deep and sammy went right there with him 😎👌 love van halen bith with dave and sammy and i still listen to it in my current playlist.
I really think you would have to have seen them in their prime with both singers to make that distinction, I only saw them live with Sammy but have seen Dimond Dave solo on a few occasions and Dave really new how to put on a great show so it's a tuff call
Dan The Man, certainly poured a Tall glass of water when he decided to interview Sammy . Great job on both their parts and why there's not A Million Views and Comments on this is mind bending . PEACE ✌️
Sammy is an example of what charisma can do for you. He super charismatic and grounded which makes him very likeable by rveryone.people want to be friends with himbecause hes genuinely cool and that has ooened lots of doors for him and he ran with it. His tequila is outstanding, expensive, but excellent nonetheless. Hes made more money than god outside the music biz yet he still performs 2 hr shows at 70! Hes lived the dream and then some.ive been a fan since Montrose so coming up on 50 yrs. Loved watching him on his path. Great interviews.
In my opinion, their was jealousy towards Sammy because he was just such a happy and positive guy, all the time and the reason for the spit. They resentedvhim for that alone. I've seen both Sammy and Dave front VH live in concert, both are great, but different. I will say the best rock concert I ever saw was with Sammy fronting VH in Vancouver, Canada at the Pacific Coliseum in October 2004. Man oh man, they blew the frickin roof off that hockey rink that night. Just an amazing show. Song after song. Hit after hit. RIP Eddie. 😊
You would be the first positive review I’ve read of the 2004 shows. I saw them in Greensboro, NC on the opening night… after coming off a long deployment to Iraq… and they sounded atrocious I don’t think they did a sound check that day. You couldn’t hardly tell what song they were playing . Sone of that was due to Eddie half ass playing certain songs making them unrecognizable. Like Humans Being But people also had no clue of the disaster that was already taking place before things even kicked off
@@MyVideos-fm7ugThat was a weird tour. I thought that’s when Dave was going to come back. I think the fans were ready for Dave in 2004, and Sammy was a mild disappointment. At least that’s what I remember.
Now THAT, was a great interview. Caused me sit & watch an entire interview with someone I really had not much interest in. Quite inspired by what Sammy accomplished & had to say. He should be very very proud of all he has built.
I never knew much about Sammy Hagar but this guy's a good human being. A hard worker his passion guitar singing and performing.. and he made it big wow
Eddie was King in the 80's and still is. I was in a Cover Band during College, 1985. Yeah a Hair Band and we had the best guitar player in the city. We played why can't this be love and i played a Seq Circuits Prophet 5 and a Juno 106. that was probably the funnest song to play...ABACAB was 2nd. Man, those were the days, Cable, MTV, ESPN. The 80's were The Golden Age for Rock and Roll & Live Music. What the Brothers did to Michael Anthony is despicable, bur alas...RIP Edward. Dance the Night Away.
Great guy. Great singer. Great front-man. Great entertainer. Great business man. Great attitude. Can't say enough about Sammy. Love and respect the man. Salute.
My favorite news man, and one of the top tier rockers in any honest world. I LOVED this interview! The one Dan did with Geddy Lee was also phenomenal and extraordinary.
I have loved Sammy Hagar from the first song I ever heard Montrose, absolute mastery of progressive rock with beautiful instruments, song content, and rhythm Rock and Roll that influenced other guitar legends to learn to play. Through his solo career before 55, after that a legendary rocker. Love his," inner child" reflection, heart, and business mind, great human. And should consider being President, love him that much , great man.
One of my absolute favorite bands at their best, we graduated HS in '77, were going to go see them, the tour date for the Spectrum in Philly was either just announced or about to be, when we heard Bon died. And Lynyrd Skynyrd near the same time. What a bad time. But great take on the band, thanks Professor!
Many reasons why I love "Sammy Hagar", but the one thing that stands out is his "Pure Heart"!! It comes through him in his performance and how he lives his life!
More respect for Sammy after this. As humble as a rich man can be. Bringing a lot of joy to the world. Kudos Sammy. You blow David Lee Roth away as a genuine, down to earth guy.
Love 🎸Sammy. Van Halen Band was elevated when he joined them , to bad Eddie had problems, that was sad, R.I. P. Eddie you were the best.. I’ve been a huge fan forever. This was such a memorable interview I was hanging on his every word. I read his book and thought I knew his story but I learned so much more . Dan Rather is an excellent interviewer it was smooth and very thoughtful., I learned a lot about Sammy and life, You’ve made me take a look at my life, career and relationships. you Rock!!! Red Rocker. ❤️🔥
