A Miami Vice revival would interest Don Johnson. He also says he stays in touch with costar Philip Michael Thomas.

Don is 100% right. The show had a certain look and style which doesn't exist anymore. It captured a certain era perfectly and I don't mean the 80's as a whole. It captured all the coolest parts of the 80's with the styles, colours, cars, landscapes and cinematography. You can't realistically get that in 2022.

100% agreed. It was a product of its time, on purpose/by design. It was meant to be 60 minute MTV Music Video. Still, a re-boot done correctly would be amazing. Crockett could be the captain, there could be another wave of cops coming in, maybe Sonny Jr.

When I was a young kid in the 60's "in color" splashed across the screen was a big deal, because most TV was still filmed in black and white. During the 80's "in stereo" was just as hot... even though there wasn't a television you could actually buy that had anything beyond a relatively tiny speaker. As it happened the local NBC affiliate ALSO broadcast it's signal on the FM radio! So on Friday nights I'd turn the TV sound off and crank up my stereo! When the music came on, it got cranked up even louder! What a time to be alive!

I grew up in the 90s and NEVER saw any Miami Vice reruns on TV. I'm literally just discovering it from seeing RU-vid clips they've been uploading recently. The clips have blown my mind! I can't believe this quality of show was around in the 80s and on NBC! It looks like a premium cable show. I always assumed Miami Vice was like some cheesy outdated 80s show, never knew it was high quality stuff. I'm happy to see that Don Johnson has a "critical" view of a reboot. More often than not, reboots are made just for a quick cash in and I think it would kinda ruin the legacy of miami vice if they'd make a lazy reboot without capturing the spirit.
@thespadestable
@thespadestable 2 года назад
@ElMarcusch - It would be very hard to pull off, because to keep it as a police drama, both Crockett and Tubbs would have to be ranking members within the department, now meaning you'll need younger member to be doing most of the work, example all the CSI shows or they've retired and are now private investigators.
@williwombat1066
@williwombat1066 2 года назад
Indeed, what he said was a matured response. At the core it’s a police show, it could be procedural akin to American Detective, but something would have to draw them in the realm of policing. 2022 may be too late when 2000 may have been the right time. You just don’t reboot a show like that without proper thought of context of time.

Michael Mann had a ground breaking show on his hands with this one. Its popularity was all over magazine covers that extended beyond People and Us. I was into it from the first episode when it aired in '84. That show had such an impact on pop culture. Being shot in Miami during its cocaine boom of the 1980s was a source of inspiration for a lot of the stories . The way Mann infused the music of that are into every episode made it each one like an hour long music video. Which was a reflection of the times since MTV had begun 4 years prior and was grabbing eyeballs in the late teen to 30s age group. The clothing styles were popping up in stores all across the country. I'm not too sure that formula would work today though. There are some decent cop shows today but none that blend the components of the visuals, the styles, music, lighting, and colors the way Michael Mann did. I haven't really seen anything on TV today that influences a particular "look" the way Vice did back then. That's one of the things that made it work. I miss that era. I was just fresh out of college in '84 and it was so much fun. The clothes were cool, the music was cool.

He is right. That show defined an era, a particular style of clothing they made famous (Pastel colors, blazers with T-shirts, no socks with loafer shoes, etc,) for the guys back then, Phil Collins music, the cocaine cowboys, cocaine epidemic and glamorization is not as prevalent as it was back then, etc. There was a electric mood, dynamic energy and riveting atmosphere about that show that will be real hard to duplicate today.

I like seeing discussion about a reboot and I appreciate Don Johnson's appreciation for what the show was, in the time era it thrived in...it had a certain feeling to it that would be hard to replicate. BUT...look at Cobra Kai. Here's my grand scale pitch for what a 2021 Miami Vice series would look like...Crockett and Tubbs left the force in 1990. A lot of time has passed...we are picking up exactly 30 years later. Crockett is the Lieutenant Commander of Miami-Dade PD....Tubbs is a P.I. who lives a quiet life in the Everglades. You would think these roles would be reversed...but here's room for explaining how they ended up where they did. Now, you have drive the narrative with new characters (but familiar to the original). Crockett had two sons, Billy and Andrew...Billy was born to his 1st wife, Caroline. He is a defense attorney in Miami, (raised by Bob Ballard, Caroline's 2nd husband). He clashes with Sonny Crockett on legal matters, but they have a great deal of respect for each other. Andrew is the 2nd son, and has taken after Sonny, step for step...he is essentially the Sonny Crockett of 2021. He gets along with his dad Sonny great, but they do argue about how Andrew "gets it done", Sonny often realizing he created a person as flawed as Sonny himself, but HIGHLY effective in police work. Andrew operates with a partner, but he has had MANY. Rico Tubbs had a son with Angelina, (who tragically died in car bomb murder). Tubbs son was presumed dead, but the baby was spared by her half brother Orlando Calderone, and he sent the baby to Detroit in exchange for a massive drug contract. Enter Michael Stockton, a half black/half latino foster child raised in the hard streets of Detroit, Michigan but has managed to become a top detective in the Detroit police department. His partner, travels to Miami for "vacation" and is killed in a boating accident. Michael slowly uncovers that his partner was trying to solve a case related to some drug overdoses of wealthy people in Detroit. The drugs were linked to Miami and the Calderone crime syndicate. This revelation sends Michael to Miami in an attempt to uncover the truth about his partner's death. Andrew Crockett is also on a case related to the Calderone family, but has few leads and can't bust them despite several attempts. Andrew and his partner are on a raid of a Calderone family drug operation when things go wrong fast, and Andrew's partner goes through a traumatic experience that leaves him at a crossroads and quits the force. Michael was at the raid and Andrew tracks him down through a tip received by an informant that Michael had incidentally contacted for information about the Calderone family. Andrew and Michael meet under intense circumstances at gunpoint and discover they are trying to solve the same case. The two become essentially the new Crockett and Tubbs for the show. The music for the show would be central to driving the storylines with a mix of 80s hits, selections from Jan Hammer's score remastered, the fabulous new retrowave music that is being created and of course hit music of today. Blend the feeling of the original show with a new supporting cast, GREAT guest stars, nostalgic call backs and excellent storylines. You'd have one of the biggest reboots of all time.

I'm 32 and never watched Miami Vice but their RU-vid channel has been uploading clips of the show and it has amazed me. I just assumed it would be cheesy or feel outdated but I love it. To me it basically looks like GTA: Vice City the TV show. Yes, I know it's the other way around, but I played Vice City 19 years ago so it took me this long to actually see what inspired it lol. It has a nice movie quality style to it and it's hard for me to believe this was a show on NBC in the 80s! I just bought the Blu-ray set and am so excited to see it for the first time!! BTW I remember my mom watching Nash Bridges (which I assumed is like a 90s San Francisco version of Miami Vice) and I really like Don Johnson, he just seems like a totally down to earth nice dude and I'm happy he's doing well and still out there being a star!

Miami Vice was both of its time and ahead of its time. What made it great was the two leads, editing style, music and art direction. There was a cool factor that to this day still hasn't been replicated and I don't think ever will. If they are to reboot Miami Vice, they have to do it right and make it really engaging, I think if they look at how Cobra Kai handled it's legacy they might have something.

As a HUGE Miami Vice fan, a show that shaped my adult life, i have to say unfortunately i agree with DJ, the window of opportunity to reboot Miami Vice in its best way has long passed. To do it right today, would mean not only a show very different than that of the original. but something that would have to be as game changing as it was, and thats simply not going to happen. Miami Vice brought an entirely new take on the crime genre, changed the fortunes of a city, was one of the finger the the formation of the hands of the 1980's several fingers at that. It was on another level. crossing broadcast television with feature films like never before. And its continues to echo in all that made to this day. Problem is.. most conceivable rendition of what the show could be has already been done. Ironically the Best Miami Vice movie was set in LA and called HEAT. A movie that had all the flare and style of Vice (not to mention much of its original cast and crew) just reworked as an LA police force crime drama. everything else from Bad Boys, Ride along, New York undercover, Burn Notice to CIA miami Hell even the fast and the furious serious, Ghost in the Shell, and so much more has taken huge cues from Miami vice in one way or another. Do we have a drug epidemic going on today, Yes! but the world behind todays narcotics is not the same as the era of the Cocaine Cowboys. The international multi-lingual jet setter age. Back then Glitz and Glamour was not as accessible to the average joe as it is today. That said if their was any way to reboot miami vice in a way that would work to our liking, the hardest part would be the writing, bring new to the table, and now decades later, their simply not much new to bring to that genre that would work. Only one franchise had his on an old approach and remade it new and interesting with a good dose of originality and thats Keanu Reeves John Wick movie franchise. his is the reboot of the old, revenge vigilante era of the 70's and 80's made popular by actors like Charles Bronson and the Death Wish series. But for ton of miami, theirs but one Television show that aired in the early 90's that also centered in Miami, but had an interesting twist as a crime drama, And that was the show South Beach starring Yancy Buttler and John Glover. this was a gem of a show that only aired it pilot episodes for NBC. look it up. its also on youtube ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hKqSPPrgMQ4.html&ab_channel=mslider2 its concept was original and clever, and would work to this day. maybe even work best considering the changed landscape but casting and clever stories would be crucial to its success. As would any show. Heck even a reboot of Burn notice under a miami vice banner would work. Well time will tell. but the format of the old miami vice in many ways would likely not hold up today.
