Don McLean is about as Americana as you can get. This song is ICONIC. I've probably heard it several thousand times, but I never get tired of it. This was by far Don's biggest hit. It happened five years before I was born...February 3, 1959...the day the music died. The day Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson were killed in a plane crash, the first major tragedy in the rock and roll world. And yes, you have to hear the studio version. A perfect production.

robert flack's recording of "killing me softly" is a song written about seeing don mcclain's gig at a small club, attended by the songwriting team of charles fox and norman gimbel. the fugees covered it brilliantly in the '90s. the lyrics say it all: Strumming my pain with his fingers Singing my life with his words Killing me softly with his song Killing me softly with his song Telling my whole life with his words Killing me softly with his song I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style And so I came to see him to listen for a while And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes Strumming my pain with his fingers Singing my life with his words Killing me softly with his song Killing me softly with his song Telling my whole life with his words Killing me softly with his song I felt all flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowd I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud I prayed that he would finish but he just kept right on Strumming my pain with his fingers Singing my life with his words Killing me softly with his song Killing me softly with his song Telling my whole life with his words Killing me softly with his song He sang as if he knew me in all my dark despair And then he looked right through me as if I wasn't there But he just came to singing, singing clear and strong Strumming my pain with his fingers Singing my life with his words Killing me softly with his song Killing me softly with his song Telling my whole life with his words Killing me softly with his song

It was way before I was born (1967) but as I grew up in the 70’s, people were still talking about the tragedy. Anyone who was alive at the time that this song was heavily played on the radio knows every-single-word of this song. There are references to Elvis , Bob Dyan, The Byrds and their song 8 miles high, John Lennon. The Beatles ( sgt Pepper Lonly Hearts Club Band) the drug. Scene of the 60s , the Stones concert at Altomont with the Hells Angels, Janis Joplin..... when it was came out, I was back from Vietnam and we were all trying to figure out the meaning and references to..

I was 15 years old in 1972 and my friend was teaching me to drive by letting me drive his brand-new Ford Pinto on the beach (where I couldn't hit anything). This song was on the radio and its always taken me back to those days. I know every word and I was singing along with you!

That is a generational anthem on both sides of the Pond. Try 'Vincent' next, one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

There is a longer version ... it takes up one whole side of the LP Album (and, yes I have it on vinyl). Needless so say I was singing all the lyrics not just the chorus! This song is nearly 50 years old! I feel old, very old! Glad you liked it. I hadn't thought of it in a long time. Big songs from your youth can become seared in your memory ... or perhaps that's just me!

The song tells the history of rock & roll since the day Buddy Holly's plane crashed in Iowa in Feb 1959. Listen to the references, The King (Elvis), Helter Skelter.Sgt Pepers(Beatle), Jack Flash (Rolling Stones)....etc. etc... A great ballad. Timeless.

This song was number one on Billboards chart for 4 straight weeks. Growing up this was our anthem where we tried to learn all the words to this masterpiece. Many good memories to this song when being a teenager was not always easy but was more enjoyable than now when going to school can be dangerous. Vincent by Don is a beautiful song to listen to.

42 yrs after this concert n its the 1st time you are hearing this?!! Its one of the most played songs in history. Used to be a running joke back in the day that the Radio D.J. had to go to the bathroom cause they playing American pie. Your reaction is perfect. Half way thru you STARTED to sing along. Every part of the scene back then was incorporated into this song. Great react. Wish I could give you more than a thumbs up on it. Now you gotta go react to him singing VINCENT. THANKS J

The levee in the song was a long tome family bar on North Ave in New Rochelle, NY. It was across from Iona College and Don went to Iona Prep. DonMcLean lived there. It’s my hometown. He use to visit his mother and her friends in New Rochelle and sing this song for them. All the kids in the neighborhood would farther around outside the house and listen.
