DON MESSER AND THE ISLANDERS WERE THE TOP SHOW IN CANADA OVER HOCKEY. THEY WERE ON TOUR FOR MANY YEARS ACROSS CANADA . THEY WERE WONDERFUL; PUT CANADA ON THE MAP.MY HUSBAND PLAYED THE PIANO. THANKS FOR WATCHING.
Waldo Munro, the piano player would come play at my grandmothers house when he was a teen, Lived just down the street in Westville N.S. Would be fun to see.
Don Messer was my neighbor when I was a little kid on Belmont St in Charlottetown. Would be nice if his daughter Janis would see this and say hi. We were childhood friends.
When I was a kid I'd watch Don Messer's Jubilee with total boredom. But now this stuff holds such precious memories. We only got 3 or 4 grainy black and white channels, the CBC of course being one of them. There wasn't much variety so DMJ ended up being a staple in our house. Shows like Tommy Hunter and Hockey Night in Canada were regular favorites in our house like they probably were in countless towns and villages across Canada!
The drummer used to teach us occasionally at B.C.Silver High School in the early 70's. We were a bad lot that's for sure- traded an education for 'non stop fun' (apparently) Used to go to the tavern for lunch if we had any money...
Hi GG. It is by Don Messer and his Islanders. He used to have a show called Don Messer's Jamboree with Marg Osbourne -a singer and Charlie Chamberlain -a tap and scottish country dancer. Lloyd.
I am listening with tears. I grew up watching Don Messer. I always loved the fiddle (it was never called a violin) because my dad was a Cape Bretoner and he loved playing the fiddle. Dad played by ear and had a sound all his own (everybody that heard him play said that) I think his sound came from the love of making music; because when he played their was a beautiful look of shinning love on his face. Listening to Ned Landry and Don Messer just transport me back 70 years.
@ethicomm Same at our home though we did, at the time live close to the border allowing somewhat more variety. We did watch Tommy Hunter, DMJ with Charlie Chamberlain and Marg Osbourne however.
