Our Relationship With God Is Above Adversity

Elder Christofferson guides us through the noise of adversity to the signal of our relationship with Christ and teaches us not to be victims. Using the examples of Job, Abraham, Joseph of Egypt, and Joseph Smith as they use their adversity to strengthen their relationship with the Lord. He quotes the Lord, "Wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous?” When certain adversity strikes we have the option of growing in faith or becoming bitter trying to justify our position.
Faith = Trust
There is an attack on personal responsibility.

I cling to my faith in Christ. Life's burdens are significant. I can't imagine not starting each day in prayer. I have experienced how consistent daily prayer unleashes the blessings of heaven... peace, prosperity, hope and strength. And, inspiration that come as good ideas that help me solve problems that I face each day

I think following God is great, but how exactly do you distinguish whether or not you're following God or some man giving his opinion in the name of god? The one thing I've learned is that today's doctrines are tomorrow's opinions/heresies in the church. Today's doctrines are tomorrow's heresies.

Elders Christofferson and Bednar and President Oaks are my favorites. Elder Maxwell is my favorite who has passed on. The victim mentality also changes us from beings with agency to act upon other things into things to be acted upon thus reducing our agency as Satan would have it.

May I make a counter point you may not like? Even though I agree with not being a victim, I think the church and it's members have a serious problem with not using their agency, which is similar to the victim mindset. For example, when I told my bishop that I just couldn't get myself to trust the Brethren anymore due to all the secrets and lies they've told, and so I would be more cautious when listening to their advice/opinions, he said: "Well, they're the Lord's anointed, and so even if they lead us astray, we'll be blessed for following their words and doing what they tell us to do." This is one of the most common phrases I've heard in the church and anyone who denies that is a liar imo. I've heard it in every ward and branch Ive gone to. It's ironic that we so vehemently condemn acting like a victim while we also just blindly follow people and act like using critical thinking skills is a bad thing to do. Even in this video the guy is saying that doing this is a negative and critical thing to do, which is "destructive". How is thinking for yourself destructive? How is using your agency destructive? Know what I mean?
@kenton6804
@kenton6804 2 года назад
@@jonbaker476 Using your agency is inherently neither destructive nor creative. It can be both, but it can be neither. That said, I have heard that phrase, but I have not heard it commonly. Further, not being a victim actually gives more power to your agency than otherwise.

Oh what an amazing synopsis of Elder Christopherson's talk!! And I have felt such a kinship with good ol' Job!! I won't relate my life story only to say, If it could happen, it did". Trial upon trial. But alas, I still trust in the Lord and hang on to my baptismal, temple covenants. My fingers have made divets on the 'old ship Zions sides' and that iron rod is where I cling. No matter what and come what may, much to the chagrin of some people around me. This lesson you gave today will be relished and revisited often. God bless you! I have to echo what someone said in a comment below, i.e. while you have the Lord and you have His Church, it takes a certain spiritual maturity to navigate that. Most often nowadays I see members drifting away from the Church (including it's leaders, it's doctrines, it's priesthood authority, etc.) while still claiming to be faithful to the Lord. And that's simply an impossibility. And while there may be many reasons why people leave the Church (and by extension the Lord), there is one thing common to them all and without exception - lack of humility.

The church is there to support and perform the ordinances that we need to be a member of his church and as a member of his eternal family. Without the ordinances we can't receive exaltation. Mortality is the place to receive those ordinances. Many ancestors die without the ordinances and that is what proxy baptisms and temple ordinances are for. Our faith has to be rooted in the Savior and his Atonement. We will not always get what we wanted in this life. We must wait on the Lord and we will be blessed abundantly. We may want a lot of things in life but the Lord knows best what we need. He knows us!!! Thank you so much for addressing faith and other topics on your channel. I have experienced much and I trust him.

Another great video of course. I will, however, push back just a little. I cringe just a tiny bit whenever a discussion of "The Church and the Gospel are not the same" comes up. Perhaps it is just my experience, but I have seen this concept abused over and over. From those who no longer sustain the 1st Pres. and Apostles (because of political differences), have their own version of the WoW, or don't wear clothing that they covenanted to wear, among others. In each of these cases, the people involved claimed to be fully committed members, but somehow have some type of "special dispensation" that puts them on a plane higher than the Church authority, because "the Church is not the Gospel". Anyways, keep these conference breakdowns coming! Loving them.
@CwicShow
@CwicShow 2 года назад
Sure, agreed. I tried to address that nuance. Just to be clear, whether pertinent or not, I didn’t say the gospel wasn’t the Church, I said God wasn’t the Church. My relationship with God and my relationship with the Church are not the same. The purpose of the Church is to develop my relationship with God.
@trishcrowe5474
@trishcrowe5474 2 года назад
Yes, I can see the difference, though it's true that people abuse that verbiage. For me, knowing the difference has helped to keep me active when people within the church have let me down. I'm talking about members on the local level basically. Having the proper perspective will help us realize that the church is the vehicle in which the Gospel of Jesus Christ is taught and implemented, run by lay members who are far from perfect. Still, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints contains the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, of that I am certain beyond a shadow of a doubt.

I think of the Lord's timing and I am amazed at how much in control of everything He is. I think of the prophecies in the Book of Mormon about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon and how it was over 2000 years that the Nephites were aware of President Smith. I also think of the Star of Bethlehem and how far in advance the Lord set things in motion so that on that night the star was there for the sign that was needed. I also understand that Father's time is always exactly the right time. We have been waiting for over 6,000 years for the events that are soon going to take place. I love my Father and I always do the best to not disrespect Him and make demands of Him. Everything I do has nothing to do with promised blessings because of the future that awaits me because of what my Saviour has done for me. The future lies before me and this life is temporary. When it is over, none of this is going to matter anymore but my relationship with my Father and my Saviour and the Holy Spirit will be worth more than anything I can imagine.

The ones with faith are told by their friends and or family to open their eyes, don't be afraid of searching out everything about the church's investements, what they give money to,, the Church is fallen, this really does sound like Jobs friends. The key is to trust God, even the timing of our scripture study is so good. To be reading about Abraham, the trials of the Israelites , imperfect Moses and trust in God and His promises. To learn about Gods covenants with us. I have become more trusting that God willAlway s keep his promises, always. He cannot lie, we. trust in Him and His goodness.

This was so good. I am noticing a trend among family and friends...and several podcasters. It seemed to begin with the Prophet urging us to take the shots. I'm not saying if it was right or wrong... but people have decided to bypass the prophet completely. And therefore the church. It will happen. Direct connection to God with our covenant is a given. Relationship to God is something we have and we work on. The church organization is here to help us achieve those things. The prophet speaks for God. It's alarming when I see people counseling others to bypass those things...

I understand where you're coming from, but please try to understand that for some of us who chose not to get it, we made that decision through much prayer and fasting. In the prophet's guidance, he asked us to include the Holy Ghost in our decision. So I took my inquiries to the Lord. I've been given my answer very firmly 3 times. My answer is only for me and no one else. I don't know why I have been directed in this way; perhaps the Lord just wants to see that I will listen to Him, despite the persecution I have felt from well meaning members of the church who weren't a participant in my conversations with God. Perhaps I would be one of the ones who would have an adverse reaction and the Lord has different plans for me. I don't know. What I do know is that he told me not to get it and I won't question Him again on that subject. I hope the same for all God loving people; that they will let the Lord prevail in their lives, even when it looks different from the direction of others.

Though my faithful father, who is 99 years old, proclaims, "The Church is God," the Church is not God. Stephen Covey in his book, The Divine Center, names the Church as a false center. To worship the Church is to worship an idol. Only those whose faith is anchored in the Rock of our Redeemer will be able to endure to the end. We know that the family is the organizing unit of the Celestial Kingdom. Even before then, we will no longer need apostles and prophets: "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets . . . Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God" (Ephesians 4:11, 13). This is when no person will say "know ye the Lord" because all will know God. Until then, we need apostles and prophets and the organization of the Church.

I know you don't agree with my perspective, but think about it like this. If you say "In Gods Time" Then it takes the position of the victim. It allows us to BE the victim. Why? Because you have no idea how to define that moment between what is "In Gods Time" and what was "As soon as you're ready to receive it". Without that knowledge, then, if you get to the point, later in life, where things that you have done, continue, then it opens the door to say "Well, I guess God didn't love me enough to make it happen for me" (in Gods time). Its the very definition of "blaming God" and its a false doctrine (if not just contrary) that we teach to use that language. Also note that it is NOT scriptural language. You use the example of Abraham incorrectly. You presume that Abraham was in a place where he could not have had faith to ask for the blessing of being saved or that, somehow, Abraham was some kind of lynchpin that God couldn't do without. This is not True. Don't we read in the OT that God can make a stone a leader? If that is true, then Abraham wasn't necessary to doing what needed to be done. He would have just gone elsewhere to find it. In fact, when you really pay attention to Moses, that's exactly what happened. Moses consistently complained about why he wasn't the man for the job...So the Lord told him to go get Aaron. There is ALWAYS a way for the Lord to accomplish His work. His plan Z's have plan A backups should he need them. My life experience belongs 100% to ME. It's not His job to be there to push and prod me to Him...but rather to GUIDE me to Him. We have a childs hymn about that very topic. ( I am a child of God) And D&C 4 makes the point a little clearer. And how great shall be your joy if you BRING even one soul unto me... You can't force the Gospel onto anyone. Yet this "in Gods time" position says "Yes, He certainly can, and it's OK". Last point here God Cannot remove agency. If this statement of "In Gods Time" were true, then God could certainly remove agency and supercede authority. Notice that Alma, on two occasions, could not do that. King Ammoniha and the builders of the Synagogues who were not allowed in to worship. Also take notice of the Story of Ammon. He didn't force Lamoni to convert. He BROUGHT him to a place where he COULD convert all by himself. (Side note: I would LOVE to hear the conversion stories of the Sons of Mosiah.) Example after example after example indicates that "In Gods time" isn't true.

You go to church to do the work, not to get healed.

I understand and agree however the church needs to make the distinction and stop indoctrinating us from the age of kids to “follow the prophet” pick a lane.
