If you have no ambition, no goals, and no expectations - you can never fail or let yourself down.
Ambition is a form of internalized social control and conditioning. It renders you just one more rat in the race.
WATCH How Narcissist Conditions YOU • How Narcissist Conditi...
Ambition is a private case of extrinsic motivation.
Ambition is the counterfactual
and compulsively
motivating
conviction that
happiness is conditioned
on the attainment of socially recognized accomplishments
and on increasing one’s possessions.
It is not the same as motivation, which is
internal,
not compulsive, and
has no external reference point.

And when you can't find motivation, use discipline. Discipline is getting the job done even when you don't want to.

This is SO amazing. Professor Vaknin, thank you once again!! There is so much shame associated with not having ambition, especially in places where there is fierce competition because of scarcity. Your words give us room to breathe.

I was extremely motivated to quit my 20 year government job and I knew that it would draw criticism from friends, colleagues and family (maybe not in my presence but certainly behind my back). So I resigned anyway (that was 6 months ago). I have been having this motivation conversation with myself that the good doctor speaks about. I gained time and freedom to think and shed my ambitions and find my intrinsic motivations. I do have a drive for achievement but I don't want to be a narcissist. I do have a heroism instinct but I don't know if this is the answer. At the moment I have no mother in law 😂 , and I'm trying to not be a slave to expectations. I've sort of landed in this nothingness way by accident or a confluence of factors. All this to say that I don't know where I'll end up but quitting and landing in almost surprising retirement feels like an accomplishment but I can't shake the feeling or pressure to do something great with it but I don't know what that is 😢 I do thank you for this video which clarifies some things and motivates me to be intrinsically guided.

Such an insightful discussion! It's crucial to understand the distinction between ambition and intrinsic motivation. While ambition can sometimes lead to external validation, true fulfillment often comes from pursuing activities for the sheer joy they bring. Let's prioritize nurturing our intrinsic motivation and finding genuine fulfillment in what we do! 🌟

This is the best articulation of internal intrinsic motivation vs external ambition! Ty Sam! If someone with BPD has reactionary motivation (and intensely so), how can they change it to be intrinsic and not destructive? BPDs I’ve know tend to be so intensely single-minded and extremely clever when they’re reactive!

Fifth minute. What about solving a math problem? For me, this has always been about the thrill of the chase. A mathematical problem is like an animal in a jungle, I am the hunter. So I was never successful in making mathematics pleasurable for my students and hence my teaching career was a disaster. Would you say my approach is extrinsic? There is no pleasure in the hunt, but when you actually crack a problem, it is a tremendous high, unlike anything else one might experience.

👍 Born in a communist country, I've witnessed a huge degradation of interpersonal relationships with the reorientation towards capitalism. And yes, it was about ambitions. Taking into account that relationships were not so great in communism either, due to the implemented philosophy... well, now it's a total chaos. Most people are in a sick competition to stand out, no matter how (the goal justifies the means). As a result, egoism and corruption are peeking, and most relationships are just superficial business agreements. We have doctors selling to minors prescriptions for high risk medicines, that the children use as a form of narcotics. Policemen dealing drugs, judges protecting all sorts of criminals, religion members bribing not to mention other horrible things... Absolutely disgusting, and for what? For money, for more and more and more🤷 The young grow up less and less supervised and guided, the substance abuse is sky rocketing amongst children. And all this fuels the discourse of extremists.🤦 Many toxic behaviors are normalized in the culture... For example a man who drinks at least 6 beers a day and gets drunk, wasted at least once a week is consider a "real man" 🤦😂😂😂😂😂 not an alcoholic. Sometimes I joke with myself that I was born in a huge colony for mentally ill people. 🤷 Really, really hard to cope... I started to seriously ask myself, if there is any point in trying to do anything good anymore?

Sincerely I can’t tell if I should be filled with joy or something worse than an heartfelt pain for our present human condition - You are very correct. I was raised in a “capitalist system birthed” state (Nigeria), human relationships are not cherished, just another means of advancing personal “ambition”. The professor really hit this one right

You are not alone to feel this way. The world has turned into a gigantic mental asylum for the mentally ill. Going back to nature can be the only solution.
@wardeggerrobertmarius144
@wardeggerrobertmarius144 Месяц назад
@@timothyirwin8974 I have a more objective view about what good means. Two premises to put it in context... 1 We all need food, so every day we take other beings lives (animals and even plants are all alive). But we don't have to torture them. Yet some people do. People even torture and kill other people for fun, or to defend some abstract and often fault idea. 2 There is a story about a girl helping a butterfly to exit its cucon, but doing so the butterfly is deprived of the needed struggle to develop its wings and ability to fly. So, as I see it, the only good people can do is to reduce as much as possible their intervention in the natural unfolding of events, to not force actions and outcomes. People have the ability to shape their environment, but we need to take into account that we share the environment with many other beings that have a more or less developed free will, and their own intrinsic motivations. Conflict of interest will always be with us, so any forcing of an outcome in favor of one, would be an aggression towards many others. Finding ways to meet your needs and desires, with minimum aggression towards your exterior, is what doing good is. 🤷 (Edit: playing a win-win game) You don't have to be a hero, no need for fame or playing the rescuer, no need for self-sacrifice boombastic action or superficial altruism. For example the rich get rich by doing a lot of harm, and then make some donation portrering them themselves like some virtuos people, in a lame attempt to buy their own peace of mind. That's not even from far far away a good action. You see, based on the principle I'm talking about, if they don't do the harm in the first place, there would be no need for their "heroic self-sacrifice altruism". Doing good in an objective way, is not forcing outcomes and minimum interference with other beings lives. 🤷 Ps A simple way to put it: "live and let live"🤷

Lol you are too funny. What about hope? I have seen hope save a person, destroy a person, and change the world. So what is hope other than the one thing we can never loose? Is there such a thing as too motivated? The only reward I ever hope for is joy in my life or the lives of others. Can you be so motivated that you damage yourself?
