Many people dream of building a cabin in the wilderness, having that off-grid lifestyle. But building a cabin takes time, money, a fair amount of skill, and definitely HARD WORK!
With lumber and land prices through the roof, it might be time to START that dream with a wall tent- maybe even in your back yard!
A wall tent is an affordable, low-skill alternative to building a cabin with an almost instant return on investment! Imagine putting up a wall tent and enjoying that off-grid lifestyle TODAY, instead of months and thousands of dollars later!
Join me as I give tips and advice about the advantages of starting your off-grid journey with a wall tent and what to look for when purchasing one.

My family still has the wall tent that my grandparents used to live in as newlyweds when he worked in the oil fields in Texas during the early 30s. We have the directors chairs, porcelain kitchen pieces, wood poles, etc. I love it! So special.

Amazing how adaptable women and people in general were in those days. I can't imagine a bride being "swept off her feet" by a guy offering her married life in a tent these days 😁. By coincidence I also lived in a tent for a few months after marrying, because my husband was a war refugee from Angola and had nothing else to offer me at the time 🙂....

My very first camping experience in life was in the Girl Scouts and the camp had wall tents set up, They each had two bunk beds inside, so four campers per wall tent. I will never forget that camping trip and how much I loved staying in these tents. They were perfect. My love of camping started there and has never ended.

If you build a cabin, your property taxes will go up when they assess your property. It won't go up with a tent. You can build a platform for your tent and cover it with a canvas top over your tent. Thanks for all your information.

terrible reason to not build a cabin. also, not sure where you live, but government agents dont comb our 100 acre properties looking for 10x10 off grid cabins... and our property taxes are based on the utility infrastructure of the area not the type of buildings on your property.

@voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885
@voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885 3 года назад
yes any structure as a dwelling first requires a sewage permit - even if it's a 10 x 10. Sure you can always live under the radar. A tent is technically NOT a structure until after six months - where I have land. So also there's lots of free camping in state and national forests. So technically a person could camp YEAR round with no increase in taxes and NO reason for the guvmint to inspect the property at assessment time (every five years I think in our area they physically check out the property). Anyway - if a person needs a car and therefore a street address for a car license - and therefore a permanent building permit - in our area you can get a street address for a Garage permit. It's a very slick loop hole. So if the land is zoned as seasonal recreation for camping on it - then you are REQUIRED to own a permanent residence elsewhere. BUT if it zoned as Undeveloped Residence due to the Garage permit - with a street address - then you could camp on the land and pay very low taxes - and have a car there also.

I love this. For added protection from sun, weather, etc... I’d install another heavy duty - not tent, but a duplicate larger, roof... extended about five feet on back and sides..l then extends about 20 feet in the front... as a porch that you can possibly screen in later! I love extra roofs with about two foot clearance on top of the tent. We had a friend do this to his mobile home... it made it sooo comfortable. When storms came, could leave the windows with screen open... if was awesome.

Brooke, when I was in the military we used to dig a small trench around our tents with a small trench leaving away at the point of the tent and that way you don't need a bottom or floor. It really helps when it rains
@jeffburnham6611
@jeffburnham6611 3 года назад
Helps to build on a gentle slope, or you have to slope your trenches. If you don't and you get a heavy rain, the trenches quickly fill with water and start coming under the flaps right into your tent.

Key point to keep water out of the interior of the tent during a heavy rain...DO NOT TOUCH THE CANVAS on the inside. Assist being the keyword .. they still get in. Also floor maintenance becomes another chore. They rub, rip.. it’s definitely more secure feeling though. @@cailin5309 certainly a choice to not have a tent floor. Also depends on the environment where set up. I still prefer a floor and cleanup any that get through. I also do not walk direct on that floor but use equivale t durable floor cover like indoor/outdoor carpet or rubberised matting. Rather that than get dangerously sick due to diseases from ticks or venomous bites of spider, centipede, scorpion etc

I was literally about to ask this. Our property has snakes and scorpions and I don't want to find any more of those inside than absolutely necessary. I pack all of my gear, into it and definitely would not consider this setup stealthy. I like to use my Polaris ranger and a small utility trailer, Once the road becomes impassable for a full size 4x4 pickup. This setup can also be packed in on horseback (although lodge poles would absolutely be necessary in that situation) and depending on your level of comfort requirements, can be quite a minimalistic setup. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The possibilities are nearly endless with a tent like this. The main thing is just getting out there and enjoying the outdoor experience. There is no wrong way, as long as you're doing it safely. 🇺🇸🤘

I found an advertisement on Craigslist for wall tent stoves and the guy lives pretty close to where I am. I went and looked and ordered one a bit smaller than a standard size. I'm going to be using mine in a 10 ft x 20 ft shed to help keep it warm in winter months. He also makes an optional side shelf for one or both sides. These add a small amount to the price. I got mine for just under $ 400.00. They are constructed of I think he said 3/8 inch metal, they also have an airflow on the front door. Need more heat, open it, need a little less close it a bit or all the way. So far I'm happy with mine. This guy has made over 600 of these units for customers and isn't intimated by customizing for you. Making these stoves is his full time job. Heck, he even makes them with ovens for baking things.

This is extremely helpful. I was so set on building a cabin this summer, but now because of lumber prices, it’s not feasible. Still would love to spend the summer on my new land! I may have missed this but where do you store food and cook so that bears and other animals aren’t attracted?

Just add a quiet generator, maybe some solar panels & bam! Tv, radio, lights, maybe a lap top! Oh yeah!

Forget all the fuss of a gas generator! Better to go with a Bluetti power bank, or the like. . .

Lights Yes, but that’s why I’d want to be out in the woods, to get away from the TV and wifi. I would build a fire, sit around and enjoy my friends.

I forget the company, but it's a gravity generator. As far as technology in the woods, it's nice to be able to look at the weather.

Adding 2 or 3 vertical poles spread over the length of the ridge pole, would increase the strength by a lot for winter snow.

This is actually my style. I have this crazy fantasy of going up into the Appalachian mountains, setting up this kind of shelter, living off the land and practicing karate every day. Like the movie "Fighter in the Wind." Thanks for the advice on how to do this! I think I've spent over half a year researching wall tents, and still not quite sure where to start, till I saw this video.

As stated below. Look for an EMT pipe cutter. It will have a cutting wheel and you rotate it around the pipe tightening as you go. With just a few returns the pipe will have been cut. Love your channel!!!
