Great video!!! I bought a 10k duromax gas only, 5 yrs ago and installed an hour meter on the spark plug wire. I too have it wired to my breaker box, it's been a great investment. I have only used the 220v 30amp to power my 1350sqft house, 2.5 ton air conditioner, 2 deep freezers, 2 refrigerators, tv, dish box, internet modem and routers, led lights, and phone chargers. It is a beast!!! When the derecho storm hit the Midwest it did an excellent job. I ran it for 11hrs on a single tank of fuel. After my power came on my buddy borrowed it and ran it for 93hrs, he did have to add oil after 50hrs of use. I paid $800.00 for the unit from home depot 5yrs ago. Again great video lots of good information!!!

What about the 20 hour oil change interval. That has me concerned...
@BBQMike7108
@BBQMike7108 3 года назад
@@thelastosirus I did not change the oil after 20 hours, It was probably closer to 40 or 50. And my buddy checked it every time he filled it With gas. Every 20 hours of use is not really a realistic number for me and my warranty has been expired for five years now. The next oil change I do, I will be switching over to 5W30 synthetic oil.
@thelastosirus
@thelastosirus 3 года назад
@@BBQMike7108 Thanks for the answer. I am building a gen shed and once it's complete, I will run it for 24H, change oil and then run it for another 24H and then send the oil to Blackstone. I need to have 100% faith it won't break down since outages can last a week or more after a storm around here. I had my HF Predator 3500 running for 5 days rock solid for Zeta. Only used 12 gallons of gas also but of course that was in 50 degree weather so no need for the A/C. The Duromax will be hooked up to my installed NG line quick connect so besides checking the oil aging properties, I need to see if my "standard" gas meter can handle a gen & hot water heater & stove/oven, or what combination thereof. A high flow meter is free but $200 for the permit & $50 for my plumber to file it. We will see but have to be ready for next storm season.

What @floyd reed said is 100% true. The family and lawyers of a lineman will go after everything you own. Is a quick an very easy install. As a lineman let explain a little what happens . Lets say someone forget to turn that main breaker off or interlock or even transfer switch. So everything in your house run out of 120v /240v. When you put that Voltage back to the lines is call backfeed. you put 120/240v thru a low side of a transfomer which it comes in thru the low side but come out thru the high side which now is 7620v (lineside). And if the lineman is working those lines hes chances of survival are low. Yes there are alot of step that i take or alot of us take. We wear gloves and take other precautions but safe towards you and lineman. Nice video.

Very well done video. This will help a lot of folks I think. BTW- On the subject of permanently installed, automatic standby generators: After lengthy research including BBB complaints and class action suits against one of the standby mfrs, I stayed with my portable whole house unit. Many people have sunk tens of thousands of dollars into 25k standbys, only to have them fail repeatedly. I've had the same portable generator since hurricane Fran in 1996. Still works very well. Matter of fact, I've got it ready right now in case of ice causing a power loss.

Thanks for the video! I have the 12k version. not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but it’s probably safer for you to get a natural gas conversation kit. Although it did run without the kit, there is a difference in pressure between propane and natural. And the generator is designed for propane pressure (different orifice). Just wanted to mention that just in case.
@JonBecker81
@JonBecker81 2 года назад
He said in another comment that this line was connected to a buried propane tank under the house. I was wondering about that too. Having to refill propane tanks if you don’t have a bulk tank would be even harder than just getting gasoline for it. I guess you could swap them out like you do with the grill tanks but that would get expensive. I’d rather have one that can just run off the natural gas line coming off the house. I wonder how much that would cost per hour of run time?

We figure the bogie man must come around when the power goes out. LOL I don't know.

My neighbors after Hurricane Andrew in Miami in 92 did exactly this. All of their lights on, and the next day he and his wife were going on about being prepared because they purchased a turn key Honda 7000i before the storm. Their backyard faced a major street, during the night someone turned on a cheap lawnmower and placed it next to their generator and wheeled it into their truck. The husband says the next day he came to check the cable connections to the generator and found the lawnmower. OP-SEC is crucial in a grid down situation.

Bought this one a year ago and finally did the complete electrical upgrade I wanted to do (panel, meter base etc) So then I added a 50 amp breaker with interlock for generator, added emporia web monitor to see loads and genset output, I used the 50 amp weather proof rv type connector, 2 30lb cylinders of propane with auto switchover device(dont wanna switch tanks at night and propane has less run time)... added a generator tent from amazon,,, found breaker on generator breaker was light and tripping for really no reason,,,, other generator reviews on amazon note breaker is fast trip at 39 amps so replacing with blue seas 40 amp... holds for 1 about 1 sec at 125% of 40 amps (about 12000 watts) and see how it does.... Just used it and found the trip issue during hurricane idalia,,, they shut our neighborhood down for 6 hours for safety from flooding.... Happy to have it,,,, turned off hot water heater and hot tub,lol.... ran house 4 ton ac, 2 fridges, deep freezer, 500 watt base load,,,, misc 120s,,, have second ac one 2nd floor 2.5 ton but even keeping it off it tripped here and there.... another reviewer on amazon took the breaker to 50 amp but I think the blue seas breaker will hold it fine...

Very cool Adam. So that's an unregulated high-pressure LP line coming out of the house? I'd love to have a propane whole house generator that would run off the main house tanks. Luckily, We only need to use it a couple times each year, but we have had a few 3+ day outages. I get tired of gassing it up before bed. First world problems :)

Don’t forget to follow the generator safety rules whenever you use your portable generator. This is a very important announcement to everyone. This is very important to see this information just for a reminder. Generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. ⚠️Here are the safety rules: 1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards. 2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. Hope this helps. Remember, safety first!

Well i'm not a rich guy by far but I took a very expensive route. :):) I went out and bought this identical generator and had it for a few months before my first outage. During that outage it was 1am and so dangerous outside (lightening, very high winds, rain, etc) I couldn't go outside to do anything. So I laid there and suffered in the heat until morning. Still didn't hook the generator up because I had to go to work and the power was back on by the time I made it home. FAST FORWARD 8 months or so later I decided to go the home generator route. (24KW) Yes, it hit me for a pretty penny but i'm glad I spent the money since I do live on the coast smack in the middle of hurricane alley. So now my big fancy dancy 13000 watt gen has been sitting in storage for almost 2 years. Never had any oil or gas run through it. I'm going to put forth a good effort to oil, gas, and crank it tomorrow.

Suggestion - for a temporary situation or a permanent solution, get a Generlink meter base adaptor. Would recommend the 40-amp unit. Safe, very easy to use, super easy (5 min.) for the electric company to install. I have no ties to the company. I bought one and it's a great solution. Using it with my Generac standby genset. Simply plug in the cord when needed, unplug when done. My electric is supplied by my city utilities. Emailed the utility director the specs, brochures and website link. Requested the utility department approval as I assumed they we not aware of this unit - they were not. A week later I received his approval letter! For best pricing, order directly from Generlink by calling them. For my 40-amp unit, they had a build lead time of 4 weeks.

@HAXMAN How do you get around the 20 hour oil change intervals? Duromax touts this as a "whole home gen" yet you have to do an oil change more than once every 24 hours. I will run my house for 24H with syn oil and then send a sample to Blackstone for analysis. I think the biggest problem is viscosity breakdown which hopefully synthetic oil should fix that... If not I will have to get rid of it since I won't be able to do so many oil changes during a hurricane related power outage which could be a few days to a few weeks.

I just bought the DUROMAX 1300HX MODEL. Although I am using a GENERLINK product that hooks up to the electric meter. Plus when the generator is running, the GENERLINK will NOT allow power from the grid in. So there is no way electric can backfill into the grid. The GENERLINK is a bit pricey. My local utility company will install it for free once I receive it. So for me I choose the simplest option for hook up to the house I found.

Great way to look after your folks and your situation is very relatable. I know you said that you're not an electrician and that you had an electrician come out to set this up for you BUT that panel as it sits is illegal and very dangerous. You cannot have that setup without a "Interlock", which will make sure that you cannot turn on your house main breaker and the breaker for your generator at the same time. Also, the box you are plugging the generator into is not a transfer switch, it is just an inlet box. I don't like to comment like this on other peoples' videos but if anything ever goes wrong you might not even be able to utilize your homeowners insurance because of the improper setup you have with this generator situation. You may want to use a different electrical outfit next time because the one you used should have told you all of this and should not have done the work without installing an interlock or an actual transfer switch. Please look into this, it is very serious and can be very dangerous. I don't like to post these type of comments but you seem like a nice guy and you're trying to do the right thing but you have been given incorrect information.

Janet, The start up is as easy as any other small engine (think riding lawn mower). Fuel on, choke, start (push-button or pull cord), then choke off. The maintenance is more frequent than a riding mower, but not over the top crazy. Keep the battery charged by starting it once a month, change the oil after the break-in period, and every 10-15 hours of running time (or yearly) afterwards. Not a big deal at all!!

Get rid of that stupid rollover check valve at the top of the gasoline tank. As fuel gets low, the metal gasoline tank increases in temperature. Thus, when the generator is shut down to refuel or just shut off or runs out of gasoline, gasoline begins to boil at approximately 125*F. The temperature will rise extremely quick. This will cause vapor pressure in the tank and the rollover check valve will be forced up and close off the tanks ability to vent the vapor pressure to the hose leading to the carburetor. When one tries to open the gas cap, high pressure gasoline vapor with gasoline will start blowing out. Very Dangerous and it was a stupid idea for the mfg to install this. Probably a Gooberment Requirement

I have the same one as well, and I connected a 10 AWG green wire to the ground rod next to my garage. But, I've asked this question on another video, and the response I got was the grounding is done as part of the 50A cable, which has 2 hot wires, and neutral, and a ground, that we're connecting to the house. So, a separate grounding is only needed on a job site, and you're just connecting a power tool, air compressor, etc to it. Having said that, since I already have access to a ground rod, I will continue to use it.

Thanks so much! I haven't noticed any issues. I actually don't know of that actually happening to anyone. It seems to just be a slim possibility that rarely happens. There are no inverter generators that are really big enough to power a whole home including air conditioning. Honda makes one that's big enough to power a small air conditioner unit and maybe some appliances. As long as you have electronics on a surge protector you should have no problems. It's more of a risk versus reward proposition. $1,400 generator and don't use unnecessary electronics or $14,000 generator and no issues. There are other things you can do as well such as installing a surge arrestor to prevent surges. Thanks again!

It's more of a myth, yes generators produce noisy power, but most modern appliances have switching power supplies, which filter incoming power and convert it to DC, then to high frequency AC, then again into DC. All this converting makes appliances immune to noisy power, and even to different voltage and frequency, you can see it on many PSU labels that they take 100-240V and 50-60 Hz ( and actually they can take even wider range)

What you have is a generator interlock not a transfer switch. Two completely different devices. Otherwise a great video.

How’s your generator running now? I bought mine in January. Ran for about 6 minutes to test. All was fine. Went out last week to give it some break in time. Now it runs rough then shuts down after a couple of minutes on gas and propane. Also, on propane it was back firing and blowing black smoke. Ughhh.

You must live in Florida.. it’s hard to get anybody to do anything around here unless you can find a local. Jersey doesn’t send their best.

Nice 'opening' scene...Love that last comment.. "....We'll make mom and dad feed us". Abandon your ship and climb into your parents dingy after powering it up. lets ride the storm together. good video... just remember to get that lock out slide. Mui impotante ! I'm pretty sure It's code. would be a great add on to your vid making.

To run on Natural Gas didn’t you have to get a carburetor for the generator designed for natural gas?
