In this video I discuss why you shouldn't spend a lot of money on buying a fig tree and provide tips for growing fig tress in containers in Arizona.
Check out my blog at Gardenofluma.com
I provide more insight on gardening in hot, dry climates like the desert and details on growing various tropical and stone fruit trees.

This is very true, although it may be hard to find cuttings of the more rare varieties. That being said most sellers have many cuttings available from November to January.

Figs are considered one of the easiest plants that you can get them rooted from cuttings. Yet I saw a YTer said he rooted some fig cuttings and got 30 % success, and he was already pleased with the results . So the success rate doesn't sound very high to me. Fig cuttings are selling on Ebay for $3 for the cheapest varieties like brown turkey or black mission to $50 or more/ each for the better, rarer ones. What was your success rate when you rooted your fig cuttings?

I bought a 8', maybe closer to 10', beers black fig for $20 today!! I'm excited but nervous though because I have never grown one. It's full of figs right now but I'm prepared to lose some because of shock. I'm going to air layer the tallest branches to trim it back to get the best use of such thick branches. It's that a good idea? I'm in central Florida so I was wondering do you think I should plant it in partial or filtered sun or just go full sun? I really want to make some fig jam!!

Every winter when I prune my trees, I root at least a dozen cuttings. I try to give them away. Nobody wants them. Nobody wants a little tree. They only want the free fruit.

I will take some when ever you have them. I will sent you some of the ones I have or share some of the ones i get that you don't have.

Bought Fig cuttings on Fig bid. On average around $30.00. my second year. Learning here in Denver CO how to grow them. High altitude 🌞 sun and dry winds. They need a little protection.

Droopy leaves as could be from that extreme heat you get out in Arizona. My leaves droop when it’s 90 plus degrees even when they are watered well.

Have you had a Celeste sugar fig or St Peter’s Honey, its like crack. The common Turkey Fig and Mission Figs are ok, kinda bland with mild sweetness. Love your videos!

I had six different fig trees in my yard and It was small if you keep the ground moistened around it you won't have issues with roots, its a soft wooded tree so its easy to trim and you get a lot of fruit, try the variegated fig it taste like watermelon 🍉.

The problem is, you have to know someone who has them,especially the variety you want. Otherwise you're gunna pay

This is not true most of the fig growers are aware of the value of the more rare varieties and I personally wouldn’t just give away part of my trees hard earned energy with out me being compensated, not to come across harsh but i have a hand full of super collectible varieties and a well grown air layer can sell for hundreds of dollars an you only have one half valuable tree “violette bordeaux” in all you’re collection no offense; my point is you would care more about the profit side if you had spent and we’re working with better more expensive varieties to begin with because the trees you currently have only are worth giving away other then that violette Bordeaux you could sell rooted out cutting for like between 30-60 bucks

When I was in the military I traveled thru out the world, went into locations that few people ventured into and was able to work and live beside folks that grew fig trees as a way of life. It was only when i retired, that I started to cultivate figs (or tried). I now have 134 trees in the ground, and 27 in containers. I have fig trees from 42 countries, some grown from cuttings. I have seven trees that I grafted seven deference varieties on each one, each what your so-called "experts" call rare varieties. I'm just an old man who learned from the folks who lived in the villages and small farms. When I read what all the so-called "Experts" on this and other web sites say concerning figs, it makes me tear up... It so stupid.

Trees from cuttings carry less energy in them. They can still grow, but their energy, is less.
@HVACRTECH-83
@HVACRTECH-83 3 года назад
That is not true at all with figs. Not at all. Almost all fig trees you will see is grown from a cutting because it works so well.
