I am one of the long-time followers of your channel. I started taking interests in PC building when the GTX 10 series were launched, and you are one of the best techs RU-vidr that offered a detailed review of the cards from the perspective of the user. Channels like Gamer Nexus is good too, but their perspective is more towards scientific, charts, and numbers. Not a lot of people followed your advice because of your conservative takes, particularly when it comes to spending more to get more. I was one of them. It is like a learning curve, you disagree with his advice, build your own PC, live with it for years, only to find out that Tech Deals have a valid point. Now, I am paying more attention to your advice, and I look forward for more build series from you. Cheers!

As always, great content and very helpful information. I built a 13600k/RX 6800 XT system over Black Friday very similar to your recommendations for about $1600. This was my first build since a Ryzen 5 1600 back in 2017 (and I went AMD mostly due to your videos back then. That system is still going strong!) When I came back to the market, you were the first channel I looked for, though I didn't even know if you were still around. Thank the Maker you were! If you have an AM4 motherboard, upgrade to the 5700x or the 5900x and a new cooler if you can afford it. If you have an old intel system, you’re basically doing a new system build to the 13600k; new cpu, motherboard, cooler, RAM, SSDs, etc.

I'm in the ignore the i5 and i9 camp, get the i7 and 32gb of RAM. I'd rather save the $300 today to get a mostly identical experience in everything but cinebench than get $300 more for the CPU when I sell it. I also couldn't go back down to 6 cores from 8, even if the 13600k is 24 threads until you disable the 'e' cores. I'm honestly torn on DDR4 or DDR5. The prices are getting so much closer together. I think particularly if wanting RGB RAM, I'd go DDR4 since 4 sticks is reasonable on DDR4 while it is not on DDR5 due to the severe speed limitations of 4 sticks on DDR5.

Since having a Ryzen 9 with 64gb after years of i5's and Ryzen 5's with 8gb, 12gb, or 16gb of RAM (because it was technically enough at that point in time) ... I will never go back to having just the bare minimum ever again. Having more than enough (and then a little extra) is absolutely worth it. My old Ryzen 7 3700x with 32gb of RAM was only just barely enough with high RAM usage already hitting 28gb ... and whilst I could have held out for another year it was on an x370 board with 4x8gb of mismatched RAM and I was just fed up with slight idiosyncracies here and there. Snapped a deal on the 5900x and just doubled down on 64 gb, and it clicked how much better it is having a solid amount more than enough, both cores and threads, though I'm a heavy multitasker in my workflow (not multithreading eg: video rendering, but multitasking eg: multiple Adobe apps and multiple browsers with dozens of tabs plus office suite etc). Next time I'm going for at least 16cores and 64gb if it's in 12-24months, maybe more.

@@tilapiadave3234 actually I was more thinking of the i5 12400 or R5 5600x types with that comment, and me deciding to jump up to the R9 instead of going with the widely suggested "all you need" suggestion of the time (and being very glad that I did). The 13600k is a beast of an i5 - it has the same kind of feel in the market as the i5 2500k did way back when. The 12600k is still pretty damn good too. The hybrid designs are a breath of fresh air for the mid-range and way more attractive than a standard 6c/12t for their multipurpose usage, bringing all the best of both worlds for the masses. If the 13400 brings hybrid down under 200 it will be a new budget king with performance that will stand for years.

Good night! Your information is very useful, however I would ask you if you could answer some questions that I had left, since I think it is the only thing I need to decide on the correct components to build my new PC. A brief summary: I already watched I don't know how many videos and reviews on the internet about the best combination of components for an i5 13600k and I ended with you, you explain everything very clearly, and what's more, the purpose of your video is for those people that we want to build a new pc today and that it lasts us about 5 years without touching anything, great! what I was looking for! Now, I read the more than 500 comments and I did not find about the following points: Regarding the motherboard: 1) wouldn't a z790 be better? I say this for 2 things in particular, one is that it is not necessary to update the bios, and 2nd, related to this, I saw many videos and comments, that the 600 series (updated for the 13 generation) do not get the most out of the 13 generation, and also result in some failures, that is to say, it would not be getting the most out of this processor, which is the case with the 700 series, and there would be no problem, appealing that more than 4 months have passed since its video, which Is there truth in all this? and, 2) regarding nvme m.2 and pci express 5.0 ports issue of shared lanes and M.2 slots not working if one PCIe socket is occupied, or if all M.2 slots are used, you lose half of the SATA ports and that pcie 5.0 currently does not work because there is still no gpu that comes in 5.0, and also that by sharing lanes then the m.2 of the 1st socket takes away performance from pcie5.0 16x reducing it to 8x but since it is 8x in 5.0 it is the same as a 16x in 4.0... I don't really understand it well if you could explain it better, because I have seen many comments about all this, so that would also reduce performance, both current and a the long run obviously... today, (also after 4 months) what can you tell me about all this point? Is there a motherboard where this specific bottleneck does not occur? or do not have 5.0 but if 4.0 and where the 16x work without taking away performance from the gpu or nvme etc? Thank you in advance if you could please answer these questions since that is what I still need to know to buy everything and have my new PC (objective: trading!, -> several simultaneous trading graphics, software, many tabs, rss, everything at the same time, 2-3 monitors at the same time, that's why the right choice of a good mother too, and in free time I play games! Thank you ever so much for this guide. I viewed it in reverse - that is to say I placed my orders over the weekend and came upon your video only today, Monday. I am renewing a 2019 build - new CPU, RAM, and flushing out my HDDs for SSDs. I do not play games, but for a round of chess or solitaire on my iPad from time to time, and I am ever so conscious of heat in my PC cubby. I primarily use my PC for Photoshop/Lightroom and some humongous Excel spreadsheets. Consequently, I am porting over a GTX1660 to the new build. Photoshop, I recently read benefits more from processor channels and speed vs. the parallel power of a modern GPU. CORRECT me if I’m wrong! I’m using the i5 13600K, the Samsung 2TB M.2 (and using 2 old Samsung M.2 in secondary roles), and new Samsung 8TB SATA drives-will replace spinning storage. I’m using 2 sticks of 32 GB DDR5 ram. Seems like our minds were in sync. Thank you for giving me confirmation. Cheers

I’m re-watching your power supply section to see if the $300 fanless power supply I recently bought will actually last me a good long while. While by the numbers its 700 watt rating is low, I’m not too concerned. First, it has a 12 year warranty, so only repeated failures from not being able to cope with daily load would convince me to buy another one. Second, my CPU caps out at 142 watts (Ryzen 9 5950X stock) and my GPU caps out around 102 watts (RX 6650 XT, Sapphire NITRO+ Silent BIOS. Now we’re at 244 watts. I don’t know how much power my other components pull, but let’s be real: it’s one SSD, two sticks of DDR4, three Noctua fans with low noise adapters, and only low power USB devices plugged into the motherboard. The motherboard is a premium B550 board with an efficient chipset and a nice VRM. If the board, fans, RAM, SSD and USB peripherals use 56 watts together, I’d be surprised. In fact, I bet I can upgrade to an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory in that power budget! An AM5 CPU would likely use 20-50 more watts under full load, and that leaves me 70 watts of headroom for extra power my next graphics card can consume full time without ever exceeding 60% of my power supply’s rating. I won’t buy PC components I can hear, and between coil whine and fan noise there isn’t a single RTX 4090, 4080, or 7900 series card I would consider without a glowing recommendation from a tech reviewer. Even if I did get a 4090, which theoretically would push my power supply to 100% of its rating, the first thing I’d do would be to drop the clock targets and try to get it using 300 watts or less (not hard to do), in part because my room can’t dissipate all that heat. So now we’re back to 80%, and truly I think that’s a worst case scenario for how I’d run my PC. No games I play need more than 6650 XT performance today, and a 4090 can double that performance at 200 watts or less. I don’t run i9 CPUs like Tech does, and I don’t run high end GPUs, especially not stock. The highest-end GPU I’ve ever owned was a 5700 XT. In its silent BIOS it used 198 watts, and that plus my 5950X at stock make me sweat in winter, so a laughably high end 700 watt power supply is… probably fine. It wasn’t the best choice, but having made the purchase, no need for regret.

I'm building a new PC now. I'm going to go with the i5 13600k, 790 motherboard, DDR5, RTX 4080. The problem with these boards is that if you go cheaper, you will have trouble overclocking. By the way, I have kept my older PC for 13 years, not 4. Spending all that money for only 4 years is not worth it.

One thing I've noticed is that tech reviewers put more emphasis on how easy it is to get in and out of a case than I think the average person would. It matters, and it's good to have, but that's something I would say is more of a reviewer problem. Most people aren't going to be constructing and deconstructing a case every other day. Most people just want to set it and forget it (there's a reference for you), so I think many people would definitely spend $50 less and have slightly more hassle every couple of years when they need to replace a part that's really deep in there. Otherwise, it's just going to sit somewhere and never get touched. It's a desktop PC after all. Personally, I plan to use thermal pads instead of paste moving forward just because it's another thing I'll never need to touch or have concerns about. If I start hitting thermal limits, I'll know it's a dust or fan problem, and that's a much easier thing to check and fix. One step closer to truly never touching it again.

Thank you so much for this guide. I was able to build my gaming PC with similar configuration. Core i5 13600kf, msi mpg z790 edge WiFi ddr4, (gigabyte Aero g wasn't available, and I wanted the white board), Corsair 5000d airflow such a beautiful case. 32 GB Ram, but plan to get 32 GB more next month, 1tb wd black 770 m.2, plan to get 2tb more here next month, 850 watt gold psu, deep cool, Corsair elite h 150i AIO. And finally for GPU, initially thought for 4070ti, but it was selling for around 1000 usd, but I was able to get 4080 gigabyte Aero g for 1250 usd. And rs 7800 xtx was like 1450 usd. Very happy with the build, although I did overshoot the budget but I needed the aesthetic too. So far very happy with gaming performance :)

Things I've learned from my experience are: never buy a cheap motherboard always get the latest ddr version (meaning,if you build today, don't buy ddr4) never listen to people who tell you what is enough ram capacity today (meaning get at least 16gb per stick) never listen to someone who tells you how "oh you don't need that much wattage on your PSU,xxx will be enough" (1000w 80 gold is pretty much a bare minimum) If you want to build new midrange pc,and are tight on budget rather buy 12th gen i3 to fill a socket on z790 motherboard, and leave the room for future improvements until you get some money for cpu upgrade (possibly 13/14900k) along with proper cooling gpu-s are topic on their own,it's like talking about fishing.

At the deal nation, we’re thanking outsiders for continuing to buy barely enough memory because it means developers have to expect barely enough, so they optimize a bit better, and we get “plenty” for longer! On the other hand, the universality of plenty of RAM would mean more interesting games would see the light of day. Maybe everyone should just buy plenty.

I think tech deals is limiting itself when it stresses builds for gamers. There's lots of us others out there that watch his channel. I'm pretty much a non-gamer, but I did a build based on tech deals advice - an asrock, extreme with an i712700k and 128g ram. The only game I sometimes play is gtaV which I got turned onto watching the tech deal-er crash vehicles. For that I just got a used rx-460 with 4g/ram ($90) it's plenty fast enough for gtaV. My entire build was about $1500. I reused an old case, and the system lives in a corner with the doors off. All my stuff is either wireless (mouse, keyboard) or long hdmi cables. Noise is not a problem and it remains cool. I don't even use any chassis fans. Top system watts draw when running handbrake is 230 watts. It idles at 60. I do blow off the dust once a month or so and have quick and easy access. I have 128g ram, bought 64 in 2 sticks, then a few weeks later bought 2 more matching sticks. I use 64gigs as a ramdisk. I store all temp files, esp. videos in the ramdisk. I haven't yet got any m2 ssd sticks, just 3 older sata ssds and a 4t spinner for backups (use easeus todo backup). So, this is my entertainment system. The asrock has 2.5gb ethernet, so I can quickly copy large video files to my older machines. I also have several 20-30 gb virtual machines, for linux, win 8.1 etc. I often just copy them to the ramdisk when I want to try out something that I'll likely never save. These copies take about 30-60 seconds. So, keep it up. Maybe a more up to date build video might help others.

I am happy with my purchase. I also bought new 3600 speed DDR4 ram sticks. The computer runs much faster than my previous i5 6500 processor.

Great vid! I am in the process of building a new comp and your deeper insights on parts are helping my decision making. Its going from a modest build into a more higher end one lol. The one thing I find virtually no one covers is the sound aspect of the build. Should people use a dac, sound card, or just the one on the motherboard. Like with every other aspect of a pc, surely the sound aspect must of come a long way as well. Be cool if you gave some insight on that in part 3.

The vast majority of people will be 100% happy with onboard sound on a decent motherboard. You need some pretty expensive speakers or headphones before you'd notice anything else. I still use a sound card myself (Sound Blaster AE-5), but I'm just weird like that. :)

When you consider it, a decent Creative Labs sound card only costs $35.00, but you're better off with the $65.00 unit. I'm certain that these devices would be better than onboard sound. Nonetheless, they should be combined with at least a set of Logitech Z333 2.1, or Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers.

Built a competent system around a 7700x. It's for my audio studio, with video production, and just for giggles some gaming on the side . It's lean (86W PPT) and fast (regular clock 5.49, boost 5.9 GHz). It's built to run very quiet but it's powerful. Cinebench r23 this morning 20100 all core, single core 1990-ish) You'd be depending on "winning" the "silicone lottery", but I do belivieve the "x" series AMD Zen 4 parts are the better bin. It's not the only electrical piece of gear in the studio, and it adds up to the electricity bill. (I live in Europe.)

When it comes to power supplies I suggest adding up all the wattages of the components in your PC case and double it and that is what wattage your PSU should be at. An Intel i5 13600k uses at stock speed 125w, turbo 254w(even more if you overclock it). Motherboards use about 84w. A budget GPU, say an Intel Arc A770 or an 3060ti uses about 225w. A case full of fans and a fan controller can use up to 29w. A SATA or HDD drive can use up to 10w each. He is right. You will be fine with a 850w with this example of PC spec but if you have the extra money to spare I would go with a 1000w or a 1200w PSU. I would also go with a ATX 3.0 PSU so you have future upgradeable in mind and you have the 4000 series GPU connector and cable. A 1500w or higher would be even better. With such a high PSU even if you are using your GPU to its max the fan on the PSU might never start to spin. It all comes down to how much you are willing to spend. If you are like me and only upgrade your PC once every 10 years or so just buy a 850 or 1000w PSU.

You are awesome dude, thank you for the info. One of the reasons why I like this CPU is because of that fact that although it uses a lot of power in comparison to let's say an i7-8700k, it's half of what an i9-13900k would use. I already have an RTX 3070 ti but my CPU is an i7-8700k and I'm looking for an upgrade and this just seems to be the sweet spot. That tip about the DDR4 vs DDR5 memory was very helpful. I do not believe that I will be purchasing an RTX 4090 anytime within the next 5 years.
