The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel ru-vid.comUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.
Appreciate the video mate, just starting to check this world of jigging out and this and your rod video was INCREDIBLY helpful. Awesome mate, really really good. Thanks from Far North West Oztralia!
Sweet video man! Was in the shop a few weeks ago looking at LH setups. Picked up a Diawa Lexa 400 LH and super happy with it so far. Another awesome small class reel at a decent price point to mention.
I'm using a phenix titan slow pitch 20g-60g with a saltiga bay jigger jdm reel for ultra light slow pitch jigging. Got a nice sea bass on a zetz slow blatz 40g yesterday
Tremendous information explanation so i could know that classification. Why dint you bring the rods forward for each classification ? My greeting from the island of Curacao...
Great tutorial! I made the mistake of purchasing an Obsession PE4 and now want to mate my Saltiga 15H with a lighter rod. From what I see in the video, a PE2 would be a better fit.
Love your videos. Can you please make a series on rod and reels for different budgets? A lot of the stuff you featured is really expensive, and some just starting might not want to spend so much right off the bat.
The lighter braid cuts through the water column better, and you want your jig to hit bottom as fast as possible to be vertical with the jig. It makes a big difference when you’re jigging 500’+
Why do you prefer right handed jigging reels instead of left handed? I use maxel slow pitch spinning rods with 4500-5000 and love the multi purpose. But I prefer left handed unless power fishing with big reels where you need cranking power
have you seen the daiwa saltiga 15-sj. i have not seen one but supposedly it has the capacity an strength of a 2000 size. physically it is in between the 1500 an 2000 size. it comes in mutiple speeds an handle options
Great video! I've tried Maxel, Jigging Master, Accurate, Saltiga but I always go back to Ocea Jiggers for the smoothness even if they're a bit underpowered. I've had no issues pulling 80lb+ AJ with OJ2k PG with PE 2.5.
@@notillegal6771 It's actually the opposite for me; use the Seigler SGN for one trip and never use it since. My Maxel Rage and Ocean Max pulled many groupers and 50-80lb Ajs and never had an issue. Although I heard the Maxel Hybrid were cheaply made but I've never used one.
@@JiggingTV mine was the hy20. The rage in the purple and black looks sick but was too worried about quality after using the hybrid. Might have to recheck maxel now
After looking at almost all your videos I am still not sure how to identify a sliding slow pitch jig and how to rig it, versus rigging an asymmetric knife like slow jig. Very difficult to get info on this. Help
Great video, lots of good info! How about Avets? I have a few, and I think they are the best bang for the buck hands down! Zero plastic, all machined aluminum and stainless, and U.S. MADE.
Hey Rick sorry to leave you hanging. We do not fish Penn for slow pitch jigging. I’m not saying they are bad reels, but I’m not qualified to give you good advice.
Great video. Any chance yall can do a video of small electrics. Bout to buy one n not sure on best option. 300j. 300mj. 200spj. Or even banex or shimano
I got the accurate for my first jigging combo. Other than it being super light I’m not a fan of it at all. The drag feels like it should be on a cheap Chinese reel.
For small class reels don’t sleep on the low profile setups! Lexa’s and TranX’s are both affordable options for light jigging. I use a lexa 300hsp-wnn and it is a tank for hauling up those shallow water reef fish and at $180 ish price point it’s a great option
Johnny you guys know that a correctly applied spiral guide system works as a level wind. Keeping the line moving to spool wall and back to the other side of spool without thumbing the line.
I don’t like the long handle on the valiant is the reason for it being long because originally it was a 1 speed reel and you needed it for cranking power? I was thinking of getting a 2 speed and perhaps I can do without the long arm?
Great video, as always! I do have a minor use for a clicker, especially since I prefer lever drags. If I'm tying knots or messing about with split rings, the clicker allows me to pull controlled amounts of line off without touching the reel while the drag is off. Just acts as a light spool brake. Certainly not part of my reel selection but if it's there, that is how I benefit from it. It's crazy how many really nice reels there are to choose from right now. We are very fortunate!
This was an excellent informative video, the way he explains is easy to understand and you can see a great passion for fishing. I have a 2001 Ocean Jigger and I think it is the best option. very good video keep it up from today you have a new subscriber greetings from Argentina
Johnny, good afternoon. Love the wonderful videos that you guys put together very very helpful. I would like to purchase a designated rod for my Ocea Jigger 2000NRHG. I really don't have a preference for any rods or style, but I would like to designate this reel just for that rod. Price doesn't matter at all. Thanks
Johnny. Question. The type of jigging that you mention, can you jig with a talica 12 or even an 8? I'm considering a jack of all trades, such as casting and jigging types of reel rather than having one jigging reel. Anyone care to chime in. Thanks in advance!
Huey, That is a tough question 🤔. I have a reel for every depth. But if I had to pick one it would be a middle class reel. Saltiga 35jh, Ocea Jigger 2000, Accurate Valiant 500n ect.
Have you ever heard of anyone using your jigs for fresh water. I have been seriously thinking about trying them for big lake trout we catch them up around 40lb on buzz bombs so I feel like they should work even better
What are you fishing for and what depth? You may need multiple set ups if you are targeting Bluefin and rockfish on the same trip. We are coming to SanDiego this year in hopes of better understanding the fishery.
I first used jigging reels for the big freshwater fishing in Thailand. Absolutely awesome fun. I now use the tiny jigging reels for catching carp. Purely because i love the reels to much. They look so nice and playing fish is so much fun on them. Looking forward to using a tiny one on a mekong catfish some time soon. My maxels did great on bullsharks and blacktips back in 2013
Saltiga reel + Johnny Jigs rod is a match made in heaven. Also, if anyone on here hasn't been to the shop in Pompano recently, they just got a TON of inventory in and plenty of new goodies to pick from.
Great video very informative and helpful 👍 I have a daiwa sealine sl20sh but I don't have the rod to match any subsections for this is going to be helpful thanks for your expertise on fishing 😀.
Awesome video! This has been very informative for someone stepping into spj. For the lighter setups, if I chose an Lexa 400XH which rod power would you recommend?
It really depends on what size jigs you are using. I would recommend watching our video on rods. Call the shop we have a excellent staff that can assist you in selecting the right gear. 954-889-4915....
What would you recommend for fishing in New Jersey for black Seabass currently have OTI slow pitch rod and a penn Fathom 300 low profile real with a jigging handle
Now I'm going for omoto reels I once get on a trip with whole group of OJ 70m+ violent water 500g~2kg sinker The captain old-old Omoto Triple really put the whole crew of OJ to shame with 1/4~1/3 the price of OJ with slight modification on the gears and 40kg drag filled with 80lbs line 120lbs leader
Great video, thanks. I’ve only been jigging for about two years so I’m no expert. I’m on Florida’s west coast so things are a little different for us. The deepest we can normally fish is around 200’ so small class outfits are all we need. I have a couple Accurate SPJ’s and Diawa Lexa 3&400. The little Lexa 300 on the Johnny Jigs Pro Jigger #1 has become my “go-to” confidence rig. I’ve landed everything from Goliath Grouper, to big AJ’s, AP’s tuna and kingfish with it. At 12 ounces you can fish it for days and it has 28lbs of drag. As an added bonus the level wind system means you can let the newbies try it without the risk of messing up your line. That means more future SPJ enthusiasts who will become Johnny Jigs customers :) Mark B
Queen Snapper, Snowy Grouper, Yellowedge Grouper...We go to a place called Pully Ridge and also locally here in Pompano Beach we have a great deep drop fishery.
@@JohnnyJigsTV crazy amount of reeling to retrieve a small fish ... but I guess it is a challenge ! Maybe need to design and build a special narrow super tall reel w/ extra hi-speed gear and drop seat rod that would allow 8:1 retrieve. If the reel was built reel narrow and tall like a 12 weight fly reel on steroids 6" diameter, might be able to get 10' per crank.
Reel and rod recommendations for 80-150lb bluefin? Ive fished Penn 12 & 16s w/ 65-80lb braid but these reels are 2x the weight of the smaller and lighter acc valiant 600NN. Great video thanks!
600NN [19 oz.] is the same capacity as Torque TRQ25NLD2 [21 oz.] makes a better comparison, but both are undersized for those fish. Better choice for 80-150 SoCal bluefin would be be 800N [24 oz.] or TRQ40NLD2 [27 oz.].
quick question to you guys. i am looking for the contact details for loomis & franklin. i prefer e-mail details.. i own both the loomis & franklin shockwave sharky rods, first gen and second gen. i recently broke my 2nd gen sharky casting on the surf for edible fish. nowhere in my country can anybody assist me with a claim on this rod. its basically still brand new as i prefer the 1st gen rod. would appreciate if anybody can assist.
