@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD Well yeah no one is buying new LCs to go offroad, and the "secret" about the gx460 has not been a secret for a while now, 2010 models are still $20k+ for high mileage examples. Cheap gmt800 suvs, some can be had in good shape for less than $2k, can do the same. I would argue a gmt800 suburban with a 4l80e + PT 4WD can outpace this escalade easily. This is a great video to show people they don't need to blow a ton of money to go overlanding/ camping.

@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD I said people aren't offroading brand new Landcruisers, people barely even buy them in the US to begin with. I am sure there are exceptions, but by and large older vehicles dominate the trails. This mainly boils down to the context of the original post: most people can't afford brand new LCs.

I have a 2000 Escalade on the GMT400 platform and it's a pretty dang capable rig, too. It does have a regular hi/low transfer case. It's super comfortable and it has the rear factory G80 "locker". Last year, I towed a small utility trailer loaded with camping gear over an unpaved 11,000 foot mountain pass and it did great. A queen size air mattress fits beautifully between the wheel wells with the second row folded down. Great overland travel rig!

The GMT400 Escalade is way more Capable offroad than this model. However good luck finding one nowadays that hasn't been beat to the ground. Since they were only made for 2 years it's hard to get one. I have a GMT400 Yukon Denali which is pretty much the same vehicle but I'm spending a fortune restoring it. I couldn't find one in decent shape. Probably would've been cheaper getting a GMT800.

@@dariog36th Yeah, I'm slow-rolling a restoration of my GMT400. It needs new seat covers and it has some electrical issues with the interior lights, but the body, frame, and drivetrain are all pretty solid. However, just this afternoon, it quit running on me while I was on the freeway. I had to have it towed to a shop. It cranks and has fuel pressure, but just won't start. I'm wondering if it's something like a bad ignition coil or something.

@@krasnaludek298 LOL! I'm not sure about being an Alpha Male, but I do like driving the Cadillac. I just got it because it was a cheap truck at the time and I wanted to have something to tow with. I have a Cherokee XJ and towing with it is a nightmare! The Escalade does much better and is way more comfortable.

the man's correct most cadillac's are treated & maintained but just awd the tahoe yukon or avalanche suburban highest end models offer most or all same toys along with feature being they have 2wd Hi (plus) have Low Range 4wd (plus) Hi Range 4wd (plus) the Awd Hi feature like Cadillac but being on demand rather than just Full Time Awd it's Eaton's Locker Rear that is Key

Wheels that will fit this can be found for practically free and you're going to need tires anyway.... Could even sell the rims and break even

My parents had a 2004 GMC Denali, which they bought new, that had the same exact drivetrain as the Cadillac Escalade. Except for some cheap plastics & headliner that sagged on the 10th year, that vehicle was very reliable all the way to 175K miles. The 4-spd auto lacked two gears. But the 6.0 L Vortec V8 & AWD were absolutely flawless.

I have a lifted 02 Escalade on 33s and love it. It’s super comfortable and able to get through a dirt roads no problem. Plus it tows when I need it. Parts are cheap when you take them off a Tahoe or Yukon. Plus any auto parts are always available.

Just adding off-road bumpers and a selectable rear locker and this thing would do anything you wanted. A two inch lift would go a long way too. Maybe another 6k including labor for that stuff. 12k for the final product would be a good deal.

I have a 2003 too, I bought it 3 years ago and haven't taken it to a workshop yet (Except for some silly repairs). When it comes to reliability this escalade is 12/10.

Love seeing the GMT800 getting some appreciation. There are a lot of guys/girls getting it done in the overland world with these rigs. Just wish they had a little more aftermarket support.

The gmt 800 platform may have its issues but most easily fixable and dealt with. They are easily one of the most reliable platforms period, they are still everywhere and probably still about 40% the cars on the road in Minnesota. I have an 03 denali bought new, 400k, still completely original drivetrain down to u joints. I am a mechanic forva living took care of it, but also look over large fleet of gms for work. The gmt800 platform is a legend ....and easily best seats ever put on a truck

Absolutely, I've been driving gmc for 20 years ,never had any mayor problems with engine or transmission, today in my driveway we have a 06 yukon denali xl 2000 gmc sierra sle 5.3 2008 gmc sierra 4.8 all 4x4

My 2006 GMC short wheel base Yukon SLT has all the luxury I need, including the factory touch screen navigation, and with the 4.10 gears, factory locker and 4wd low it has gone through many trail runs where land cruisers and tacomas go.

If these are going to see dirt regularly, definitely want to upgrade the tie rod ends. GM to this day are putting twig sized tie rods in their whole truck lineup.

I love the look of this thing with KO2s and no running boards! I actually really like this generation of GM truck, and Tommy is dead on about the reliability/longevity. Even in New England where I live, these GMT800s are EVERYWHERE, most completely beat up, leaving you wondering how they even stay on the road, yet they just run and run and run. My coworker had an '01 Sierra that looked like it was dropped off a building, and he used that truck hard for 300k miles before getting rid of it two years ago for 2019.

I paid $6 thousand Canadian certified for my 04 Tahoe ,with 132 thousand kilometres on the odometer back in 2018. Third owner now it has over208 thousand kilometres ,still running smoothly.👍🏻🇨🇦

I had my doubts due to the lack of low range but I was impressed on how well this did. Also with the 80 and 100 series LC they almost all have 250k miles and have been through multiple owners. You could likely find a bunch of these with original owners. That was part of the original appeal for the GX. They were all treated like creampuffs their entire life and were cheaper than the LC on the used market which made them great overland rigs. Maybe we’ll see more Escalades on the trail this summer.

I've put 40k miles on my 04 Yukon Denali and I love it. I've had not one single complaint. The comfort is unmatched, even when compared to new cars today

My 1gen gmt400 esclade has 310000 miles on the clock and has been more places than an awful lot of the done up jeeps out there. Not that it's better at it necessarily but it's what we took on vacations when the kids were little. Camping, fishing, hiking and just getting off the beaten path. If your not stupid about it and take your time just about any 4 wheel drive will go more places than most people realize. Thanks guys.

I have a 2004 Tahoe that has all wheel drive with 4lo. It has the 5.3 and does great. Almost 300,000 miles, but was totaled and frame is bent. I still drive it every day. I also have a 94 Yukon 2 door diesel. Love them both

Couldn’t agree more, I have 2 GMT 800 trucks with 200k & 300k miles, and they both run great and have been very reliable. I love the platform so much I’d love to buy more. I understood the draw of older Land Cruisers, but don’t seen much difference between the newer ones and any other modern SUV, other than the Toyota LC name.

I daily drove my lifted 2004 escalade for years. It was reliable, comfortable and worked fairly well off road. It was a tank in the winter too. Fuel mileage was 12-13mpg and that never changed. Drive it like a granny or put it on the wood the whole drive, it didn't matter, it'll still be 12mpg.

Escalade has more power, every so slightly bigger fuel tank & better mpg by 1-2, so that’s a slight advantage for it over the land cruiser too

@@AG-rk5hj Toyota is so confident in their reliability these days they asked BMW to build em a sports car from the ground up “just to mix it up” I guess🤣🤣 so confident in their quality it took em 15 years to come up w/ a new 1/2 ton design….which they copied heavily off the Big 3’s LAST gen models, & they’re already blowing turbos lol!🤣 toyota is SO confident in their N/A V8 engineering & reliability, they got tired of being so perfect they opted to have Yamaha make their performance 5.0 you’d find in the RC-F (kinda important for the brand) just to get a lil “crazy”! In fact- they’re soooo confident in their reliability that when it came time to make a “supercar” to compete w/ the likes of Ferrari, they KNEW again that they were just such reliability perfectionists that the car take forever to build (not that it already didn’t) so yeah, they asked Yamaha pretty please make us a supercar V10 engine!!! Please please Yamaha!!! And Yamaha obliged yet again - ironically the LFA is considered one of “Toyotas” greatest achievements & one of the most noteworthy attributes was the exhaust note as well as the screaming high redline….both of which had nothing to do w/ Toyota engineering or Reliability. If the sarcasm doesn’t seep through the interwebs for ya- just know it’s there😂🤣😜

I have a 2005 Escalade with the 6.0, but it’s 2WD. It’s a family vehicle, so no need to go off-road with it, but it does do great in the snow with good tires! 230,000 miles on it now and it’s been one of the most reliable vehicles I’ve ever owned. Only minor repairs have been needed since I got it in 2009. I have towed a 5,000 lb trailer across country a few times with it, and it does so effortlessly.

I own a 99 Suburban with 250k miles. Drove it from Texas to Wisconsin to visit family. Not one issue and still got 900 miles out of that 42 gallon tank before I had to fill up.

Great video Tommy. I had 2 similar vehicles 6 years ago. It was a 2005 Cadillac EXT, and 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche. It had the same exact motor and all-wheel drive system in it. I ended up adding some of the same upgrades listed below to it, minus the locking rear diff, which would have made a huge difference as a usable traction aid. The only real downside to this as a luxury offroader is the fact that it doesn't have a more traditional 4wd system. Which is one of the main reasons for selling the caddy, and going with a slightly older 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche LT that came with better body protection aka (cladding) and a 4auto 4hi and 4low transfer case. -Add 2" lift. -35's tires. -full length roof basket for gear. -regear diffs. -add a auto locking rear diff like the g80.

I bought my uzj100 for $10k and my FJ62 for $3k touring all of offroad Utah/US. Personal preference, I just love them and know they won't let me down in the middle of nowhere. Just capable and just love them. Also , All wheel drive, is so different from 4wd with lockers.

Not to mention the new regimes gas mileage requirements. The 90s GM trucks still had solid steel all over and they’re losing more and more of that to save weight.

These are one of my favorite SUVs. I like to camp out in the boonies and hike to unexplored areas. Been looking at GMCs and Chevys of these vintage for overlanding. After seeing what this Caddy can do, it’s on my list to look out. Thanks for sharing

I'm preferential to the Yukon, Yukon Denali, and the Tahoes myself but I would definitely not sleep on a gmt800 Escalade if I could scoop one up in good shape for a good price

I bought a 1994 ford f150 4x4 5.0 5 speed with 106k miles for $3k its a regular cab and a short bed, but the short bed is still actually usable in these cuz its still 6’9”! I bought a tent the covers the bed area to sleep in and i added a power inverter with 6 6v golf cart batteries wired paralele with each other for power. i can take everything ill need with me and have power for up to a couple of weeks too and a generator and solar pannels!

My 2007 Denali has the 6.2 without DOD and now at 185k miles. Doing great for camping trips with the family and fun on logging roads here in the northwest. It's awd, but the g80 rear and low end torque helps. Also lifted it 3 inches with a 3 inch body lift while running 35s mud terrains. Still retained the air ride suspension too. Considering the cost of my rig against the Toyota land cruiser, I'm still happy with my suv all these years.

Please make sure you research the 6l80/6l90e torque converter failures. Mine gave up without prior notice and is now collecting dust. $4500-$7k new transmission.

@@korn111685 Totally agree with the 6l80e torque converter. I actually swapped mine oit for a performance Circle D billet Torque Converter. The stock one will destroy the transmission around 130-180k generally.

GMT800 fanatic over here. I'm in a few forums and alot of members take the best parts off the Escalade like interior pieces and 6.0 lg4 engines and install them on Silverados and Sierras.

04 escalade ext with over 400k still running strong I live in Canada so just simple body work in the summer and re did the entire suspension other then that most reliable vehicle I've ever had

Proper Chauffer vehicle fur Mr. Blaze. You lost me at all wheel drive traction controlled. GX460 is the best luxury off roader. Basically, a Prado underneath and a low range transfer case. The guzzle premium fuel like the Exon Valdez.

I have an 02 navigator with AWD and low range transfer case. It comes with heavy skid plates. I took the air suspension out and added a 3 inch lift with 285 70 17 tires. It drives better than stock and is a beast off road and hardly ever had to put it in low. You can't beat a big suv for interior size too

I have an 06 Yukon Denali that I use for overlanding. Love it! Rattles a bunch after all the hunting trips but has been reliable AF without many problems.

my daughter had a 2002 escalade gold package which means topped out loaded with a 6.0HO motor, that truck was bulletproof until it was stolen in las Vegas

Love the video bro you nailed it, these are some super reliable gm products based on this platform. Just put 310k on my escalade and it is still all original and never has let me down. Everything still works, the engine is still very quiet and does not use any oil. It also ride very quiet and smooth as i have took very well care of it.;

I had a 1999 Escalade and it was a tank, I loved it. I took it off roading all the time. It still had the old 350 in it. Only time I got it stuck was when I decided to drive blind down a huge hill and hit a big ass bolder lol.

I don't have an Escalade. But 2 years ago I got a great deal on a 2007 yukon XL 2500 that I couldn't pass up. Not the best mpg... but I LOVE it. Comfy and can tow for my needs. Snagged it for $8200 with 162,000 miles on it.

Great video Tommy. It's a good idea to tell folks about the gems that fly under the radar. I always tell my family to look out for what "old" vehicles are still populating the road, as it's telling of what has stood the test of time. No one is going to pay thousands upon thousands to keep a 15-20+ year old car or truck running. If it's running, that means it had stayed cheap for families to run & repair all this time.

If you find a well taken care of Escalade, it probably will be worth it. There is a major difference between a hood Escalade driven by a drug dealer and an Escalade driven by a businessman or soccer mom from wealthy suburbs. The wealthy suburbs Escalade is the car you want to find because they would've been taken care of better and will last longer. A hood Escalade with ruined paint, seats, engine, will never run well.

Bought my '05 w/ 150kmi LQ9 mint for $4k. Rebuilt the 4L655E w/ billet TC (suggest an upgrade to 4l80e). Made the LQ9 into a 500hp LSX w/ cnc'd p&p 706 2"1.55" valve heads, BTR truck norris cam, TBSS Manifold, LS3 TB, Yellaterra Roller Rockers, 42lb flex fuel injectors, Edelebricl victor high flow water pump and upgraded the trans cooler to a tru cool 40k. Next up is making the front end torsion bars into fox 2.0 coil overs, deleting the rear compress shocks and adding a 3" lift to it for ground clearance w/ hellwig front & rear sway bars. Kryptonite UCA & Tie rods coming soon too! Perfect for towing a 7klb travel trailer and over landing.

💥 Great vid. The one thing that you missed was the button on the end of the gear shifter. It puts it into “tow mode” changing some performance parameters including the shift point in the trans. Under average throttle it holds each gear noticeably higher raising the RPM point before shifting to the next gear. That means that you’re running the engine close to its max HP. A slight more depression of the gas and it shifts into the next gear being up higher in the RPM range going in so your running in that higher HP range continuously. I call it “race mode” on the street not towing anything. She’s a beast in that mode. I have the exact same truck in that color too. Bought it in 2005 with 17k miles and it’s still in pristine shape. So hard parting with such a fine luxury vehicle with so much power and considering that I haven’t had a car payment in 14 years...!! 👊🏼🌟👊🏼

I Bought my 2005 Lexus LX470 with 75k miles 8 years ago for $25k. Right now it has 175k miles and it's still worth the same amount of money lol. These escalades are very reliable but they just don't look rugged enough. I'd prefer the Yukon Denali. Same drive train, same luxury features but looks more rugged.

Just got a Black 2005 Escalade ESV @125,000 miles for $5700...putting in a new modern android-radio w/backup camera this weekend. Planned upgrades include new cadillac floor mats, new head lights, new led interior lights, full detail/leather conditioning, trailer hitch carrier, roof rack w/bag, nice refer/cooler, chuck wagon kitchen set, good tires (probably keeping the OEM classic wheels...).

Just bought a 05 escalade creampuff with just under 140k miles for $7,500. Only blemish is the liner is sagging on the sunroof slider. Absolutely love it!

Today I learned: what I call 'overlanding' is very different than what Tommy is talking about. The 'easy' trails I take to my favorite camping spots test my Jeep's lack of a rear locker and winch. Meanwhile, the only thing I could add to an Escalade that could get me where I want to go would be a better pair of hiking boots. I DO like the idea of a luxo-barge with a transfer case swap and rear locker, so kudos to TFL for highlighting a novel solution, but it still wouldn't fit a lot of the places I go.

I drove a 2007 for a while. Never really had it off road, but when I traded the 26 inch rims a previous owner had installed for factory rims, gas mileage shot up by an average 5 mpg. Had the 6.0/400 hp and was really rewarding to drive in straight lines. Rode great. I do kind of miss it, but the tranny was getting a little loose at 100k.

It's been GMT800 for me forever now. That and a 4th gen fbody. Two best cars of their type to date.... Currently have an 04 z71 Tahoe w/ 250K, runs like new... 05 Escalade EXT (truck/avalanche type) w/140K with the 6.0 HO (lil above the basic 6.0), and the 99 SS of course. The EXT (and other lades) got a good deal more than the Yukes and Hoe's though... from magride to auto leveling rear, to all the amenities you mentioned and more... also, all working. Same with most of the Tahoes and such that I've owned, and anything that previous owners neglected could always be fixed pretty easily with minimal cost and effort. These, and all of their kin, have been the best bang for the buck for a long while now... And yeah, reliability wise... these are king... 350K miles and up. Whether it be the 5.3 or the 6.0... it's an LSX, lol... it's not gonna break unless you do something dumb.

I have a fourth gen F body (Firebird Formula) and I do love me that 5.7 LS1! I have a '13 4Runner for a daily driver, I wish I could LS the thing, the Toyota motor sucks. I love the GMT 800 SUVs, and I often think I'd rather have one than my forerunner. It just seems like it's so hard to find them in nice condition, although TFL always seems to find cream puffs. I would love to have a 2003ish Tahoe or Burb Z71.

Love your dog! Looked like he/she was just enjoying the ride and chilling. In Ohio these vehicles, along with most early to even late 2000s vehicles, are getting harder to find. The rust usually gets them by ten years or so. Now I see mostly the GM platform from 2007 and up.

Yes these are beasts of a truck. I have a 2008 Escalade EXT which is the pick up or "Avalanche" version and I have owned it since 2012, bought as a certified pre-owned with 30,000 miles. It currently has just over 100K miles. My truck has the 6.2 with 408 stock HP and all wheel drive. I don't take it off road but I do pull a large travel trailer and an even bigger boat. I have a 35+ foot boat with multiple engines that weighs in at over 10,000 pounds, add 2500 pounds trailer included. I love the look of people at the boat ramp at low tide when they see the massive boat I'm about the pull out of a steep wet boat ramp. They say "you aren't pulling that boat out with that truck"! Most boaters think you need a 3500 dually diesel 4X4 to pull anything bigger than a 22 footer. My Escalade pulls the boat out like it's not even there. The key is having the boat set right on the trailer so you have just the right amount of weight on the hitch. The weight of the 6.2 on the front wheels and the "stabilitrack" will do the rest for you. Lightly feather the gas peddle and up she goes.

Escalade has cylinder deactivation issues, sometimes head gasket issues, and sometimes transmission issues 60 series trans is weak, 80 is better but there's a lot of horsepower to deal with. That Landover is LUCKY to see 100k miles. With many thousands spent on maintenance. The older Discovery (95-2000 ish) is better off-road, but has pretty bad head gasket issues, and lots of small typical LR issues like falling head liner, broken plastics, torn leather, broken switches, dead windows, etc. I'm no Chevy fan but you can get out and enjoy the outdoors cheep and pretty reliably with one. Junk yards are full of parts if you can turn wrench and save a lot of money.

Yup 2007 was first year offered... Also an update to his exact question about 2002 I see many camshaft bearing failures at our machine shop. Occasionally cam lobe failure even though it's roller. Intake gasket failures misdiagnosed as head gasket failures etc etc..

Our 2005 Hummer H2 bought last summer for $19K with 97K miles. It only costs about $45K new and held it's value really well as do all trucks/SUVs but better than the LC or LX.

As a 100 series owner I feel like this was made for me. Love my rig and almost everything about it. Luckily I was in the market for a truck way before the pandemic so I didn’t pay that much considering. I wish it had the solid front axle of the 105 series but with the ifs it’s better on road and no death wobble. By no means a sporty car but it handles surprising well on road and off-road. For now I can only have one car so it’s doing it all super well, the only thing is gas mileage is not good.

You should test a 2004 Explorer Eddie Bauer 4x4, I love it, I was able to keep up with Jeep on 35’s and a lift many times on mud and rocky roads , strong 4.0L in my opinion

In SoCal, just purchased an 03 for 4K with 147,000 miles on the clock. Purpose will be to haul the boat around and pull a trailer with our side by side. So far I love it. Like in the video everything works. mine is a one owner vehicle, only complaint is the previous owner had a long haired dog and the hair is everywhere. lol

People miss the point of the Land Cruiser. It's not that they're more capable than others like 4Runners,Jeeps,etc. It's that they can take the abuse year after year. Basic maintenance and will still be adventuring long after everything else is in the scrap yard. That's why they're worth the premium.

Kudos to Tommy for offering a contrary perspective and suggestion. For a general use outdoors and on fire roads, I'm sure the Escalade would work for a lot of people. Not having low range would not work for my use case, but I'm sure for many people it would be just fine. I'm still looking for a good used LX570.

You can do anything with these trucks. PCM hammer and tuner pro make it so you can flash the option in on whatever you put on from any other GM truck. I installed a manual t case, 4:10 gears, and a Mercedes diesel. The truck is none the wiser. Rear air suspension delete, hummer h2 (air delete) coil springs. If you use torsion bar keys for a lift. It is a good idea to get aftermarket control arms that will allow you to get the appropriate caster angles for an alignment. The front steering set up in the GMT800 sucks though. So much slop everywhere if you aren't on top of it.

I can see how these make sense for most people. Most people don't cross the Sahara desert or travel across multiple continents. These old trucks are pretty comfortable.... And cheap.

My 2000 Chevy Suburban 1500 4x4 is invaluable. Reliable, incredibly comfortable, capable and easily repaired on the fly. Over 255,000 miles on the odometer and still runs like new.
