Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #369
A female prospector who kept all her gold in her chicken coop, a Chinese gang murder, the first execution by lethal gas AND the best burger on U.S. 95 are just a FEW of the surprises waiting for you in tiny Mina, NV -- a town I've driven thru countless times on my way from Vegas to Reno, but never stopped to check out until now. This place is better than Disneyland!

It’s a bit late to comment on this post, but I do have memories of this place. I worked for a small mining company there and lived in a company owned trailer at the southern end of town. This was 1970 and from your video, it seems nothing much has changed in the last 53 years. At that time, Mina had a population of about 300 and Luning a population of 9. You probably missed the airport and the 9-hole golf course. I kinda miss that place.

Great video! I grew up and lived in Mina from 1952-1963. Back then it was booming with a population of 300 people! Had a school there with grades 1-6 and a library. Grades 7 and above bussed to Hawthorne. My folks had a grocery store there in Mina. Was a great place to grow up in. Everybody knew everyone, you couldn't get away with anything without your folks finding out! No one locked their houses or their vehicles, on fact most folks left their keys in the ignition! Much simpler and honest times back then! Thanks for the return to my childhood!

Yes I went there starting in 4th grade. At grade 7 they bused me to Hawthorne. I hated that daily trip. The grocery store was owned by a greek named Jimmy and his mom when I lived there. He drove a red '75 Corvette. I remember he had me come over to see it when he bought it new. He also got the first Atari 2600 in Mina and all the kids would take turns playing it. He was a GREAT guy. In fact, almost everyone there was a great person. I miss that life and those people more than you will ever know.

@@CarsandCats I remember Jimmy and Ethyl Marakas well. I hung out with Jimmy when I was there in 1970. He always had cool cars. When I knew him he owned a GTO and I drove a 68 mustang, not a cool mustang, just a mustang. Often, when Mrs. Marakas went to Yerington to buy supplies, I would watch the store for her. One interesting character in town was an old miner named Delbert Spainhouser. I learned a lot from that guy. Fond memories of the Railroad Cafe too. Sadly, It burned down some time after I left. I lost track of Jimmy, but I did find that he and his mom moved to Las Vegas.
@CarsandCats
@CarsandCats Год назад
@@garycooney6370 I knew Delbert very well. He was best friends with my Stepdad and got him started in mining! We ended up with a gold mine on Pilot Peak. I worked it in the summers and my Stepdad sold it for enough to retire on where he moved to Yerington. Mom worked cleaning rooms at Sue's Motel back when the railroad still came through town, and it was always full of railroaders. There was a fella nicknamed Shorty that ran the gas station next to it. I bet you remember him too! Man, I'd like to talk to you. I have a lot of stories about that place. Lived there for 6 years.
@Ubermichello72

I lived there as a kid from 1982 to 1988, I went to mina school, my teacher was Gloria Gage. Shorty worked for Charlie Jackson at his store next to Sue's Motel, his real name was Elliot Dara and he wrote three books that were actually published, backyards of Nevada was the only one I can remember. Jimmy Maracas actually won the Corvette in Hawthorne at the casino, I too was bussed to Hawthorne for school, it was 33 miles and i hated every minute of it lol. Love hate relationship with mina, lots of memories of that old town. 43 years have passed since me and my family moved there, Still friends with nearly everyone i grew up with , went to school with in mina.❤

All the houses along the highway and just off the highway were built by the railroad. There was a huge railroad exchange here. This yard was where the Narrow gauge Carson and Colorado Railroad Company, later Southern Pacific changed from Narrow Gauge to Standard Gauge. The Narrow Gauge railroad came from Laws California, just North of Bishop. On Highway 6 just West of the NDOT yard, the old rail bed crosses the highway. Last time I talked to a person the said the railroad bed was still drive-able all the way down, which included the tunnels. If you turn on highway 361 just North of Luning and drive to the top of the CalVada summit, there is a dirt road to the South. If you head down this road you will come to the Mina VORTAC. This is an FAA site which allows the Air Traffic Controllers in Palmdale to talk to the aircraft flying from Salt Lake City to San Francisco. The site farther North is the site I put in when I worked for Nevada Bell, this site was built to replace the old open wire system which was in use when I transferred from LA in 1990. Previously the circuit for the FAA controllers use to come through Hawthorne, down to Tonopah, and from the brick building on the North side of Tonopah, went all the way to Luning, up beside highway 361 to the VORTAC. Now it is from Hawthorne to the site. Afterwards we put a link to Gabbs the East facing antenna, then to Rawhide Mine, the North facing antenna.

My cousin and her husband had a mine up in the hills somewhere between Mina, Luning and Gabbs. I was only about 9 or 10 years old, but I spent a couple of weeks two different summers up there. That was back in the early 1960s. There wasn't much there even then. I do remember gas was about 60 cents a gallon when it was going for 30 cents everywhere else!

I had relatives on my mother's side who lived in Mina and worked in the mines. We visited on vacation a couple times back in the 60's. The old Chinatown was on the East side, but all that was left were the foundations. If you dug around you could find all these small medicine bottles that supposedly contained opium, and there were a lot of old, charred books and magazines in Chinese. My uncle actually bought one of those roadside lots in the 70's bc 'the railroad was coming back' hahaha.

You should check out the brothel just down the road. It’s the trailer with the Greek ionic columns lining the lot

Very cool piece. I'd go just for the burger! The Carson and Colorado narrow gauge RR ran from there to Owenyo in Ca. and is on my list of abandoned railroads to explore for my channel. Also, I don't think the RR is going to get back there any time soon. I just retired from UP and there has been no talk of it.

There use to be a gas station mini mart there at one time. And yes, the rock shop.
