Careful there, Alex, you're getting close to finding you are an 80s fan after all. Yeah, the 80s were much bigger and more diverse than the stereotypical elements they've become known for. There was a LOT of really good stuff coming out in that decade, all of it fresh and new and different-sounding. This tune is a good example; it has withstood the test of time and will remain with us, fondly-regarded well into the future.
@SteveMenardDesignDXM
@SteveMenardDesignDXM Год назад
Yes, they're from the 80s, but they came out during the 'transition period' (1986 onwards) which was less electronic and more folk-oriented (see Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega, John Mellencamp, REM, The Dream Academy). Crowded House's earlier incarnation was Split Enz, which definitely had a prototypical early 80s sound, as they were part of the 'New Wave'.

I came up in the late 60s and 70s, but the 80s had some amazing stuff. Early Los Lobos, the Cure, Oingo Boingo's Dead Man's Party, early U2, Prince, Van Halen, Springsteen's Born In The USA and Nebraska albums, Bruce Hornsby, Huey Lewis, Men at Work, Midnight Oil, early Bryan Adams, the Greg Kihn Band, Guns n Roses, Motley Cue, and so many more. I forgot how spoiled we were. We used to hear Hot for Teacher or Dancing in the Dark and think "God, not this s*** again." These boys have helped me hear this stuff through new ears. It really is pretty cool.

@@Renkk17 I keep waiting for them to crack open some early Los Lobos (Will the Wolf Survive, One Time One Night In America, Shakin' Shakes) or 80s Springsteen or Siouxsie and the Banshees. Lots of stuff to hit in the 80s from the good ol USA.

This is one of those 80's tunes that never wears thin for me. It's just so well crafted and emotional. Neil Finn is amazing for sure. He cut his teeth with the band Split Enz in the late 70's with his older brother Tim, whos also a great singer and musician. Crowded House is actually (for the most part) Split Enz with a new name. This song also features some LA session musicians adding extra parts, including the incredible Tim Pierce on guitar.

Not exactly. Tim Finn and Phil Judd started Split Enz in 1972. They had little international success until younger brother Neil Finn replaced Phil Judd and Split Enz began to get international success largely due to Neil's songs. In 1983, frontman and co founder, Tim Finn left the band to pursue a solo career and left Neil to head the band which Neil didn't feel comfortable with because he felt it was still his brother's band and the look and style of Split Enz was not his taste so he formed a new band with his best friend and former Split Enz drummer, Paul Hester. Nick Seymour was added and that became Crowded House. In 1990, with his solo career failing, Tim Finn was invited by Neil to join Crowded House and they released a hugely popular album called Woodface, thanks to the additional talent of Tim Finn. Tim Finn quit Crowded House for reasons only known to the group about a year later and returned to his solo career.
