I've had a tortoise rob in my family for 50 years now. My grandpa found him as a baby with a yolk Sac near the mountains when he was 15. He roams in my grandpa's backyard and gets to live in nature. Remember if you keep him enclosed the tortoises life span will naturally decrease. In nature they can live for way longer. He enjoys the sunlight , drinks water from ponds and after a long day in the burrow he might sit with my grandpa at the patio. He eats once a day at best because they somehow seem to conserve their energy resources very efficiently. He's really quiet and has a great memory. We have a huge lettuce farm behind the yard so that's what he has been eating with occasional watermelon treats

I grow up in brazil and I had a pair of the same turtles in this video for 10 years and they were kept free roaming in an apartment, when they were hungry they would come towards same spot. They ate mostly lettuce and vegetables, definitely kept in a way lower maintainence then described in this video. I have had tortoises and box turtles for eight years. They are a ton of work to get set up properly but after that they are pretty low maintenance actually. But they have more personality than you would think they do. They also require more space than you think they would. For the right person and situation they make a great pet. Being able to keep them outside for part of the year is a great thing, I’m glad I can do that. And I think using a stock tank is a great idea for turtles or tortoises in certain situations. They are cheap and easy to set up.

From one tortoise pet parent to another ... A tortoise's diet and lighting is shown on it's shell and skin. Your toitoises are coning. They need less protein and more fruit and veg. Maybe get them a some vitamins and minerals to add to their food. And redfoots need fruit and berries in their diet and a fair amount. They need alot of fluid, mine has a water dish. I am being helpful here, not mean. My fiance is a zoologist and has taught me so much. Just passing on the knowledge. I love my tortoises. I have a sulcata and a redfoot.

@atc35012
@atc35012 3 года назад
@@HomelanderV Coning is when the shell is raised in places. It almost looks like the beginning of pyramids building on their backs. A tortoise will have small raised places on its shell. When those raised areas get really big it is usually because of poor lighting and poor diet. This is a sign of health issues.

Our Horsefeld's tortoise is 24 years old, we had her in a vivarium but she hated it. So when she got too big for it we let her roam in our (secure) garden all summer, coming in at night to her box in our utility room. Then instead of hibernating her we let he chose where she wanted to be in the house, which was right next to the wood burning stove, she semi hibernates there from October to April, occasionally coming out for a drink and a bath, but hardly any food, then awakes again and goes back into the garden, easy as anything!

One of the great things about living in the Deep South is around 7-8 months out of the year you can keep tortoises outside. One of the best parts about Sulcata’s is that their salads aren’t really that bad because they can literally eat certain common grasses on top of relatively cheap veggies. We have a year old female sulcata and we’ve been blown away by how much character and personality they have. Joined some FB care groups and people post videos of them calling the tortoises almost like a dog and it’ll come to them. The main thing about the diet especially if you’re giving large amounts of grass or even a little is always make sure the grass isn’t being treated either with toxic fertilizer or herbicides

Last spring I finally added a tortoise to my collection, a cherry head x red footed tortoise! They are amazing animals and I'm loving mine. Obviously Aldabras and Galápagos tortoises are really cool, but unrealistic for most people. My redfoot does enjoy occasional protein, whether it's superworms, dubia or part of a silverside fish. Most of his diet consists of Mazuri tortoise diet (which I highly recommend), collard greens, veggies, fruits and supplements.

I've had a western hermann for around a year now and it was a lot more complicated and time consuming than I imagined. They certainly know what they want and when they want it! But I'm getting into the swing of things now and the tortoise itself seems in a routine of when it likes to sleep and eat. He's only young so is in a 4ft x 2ft table at the moment but you definitely need a spare room to keep one. I'm going to need to upgrade when he's older but thankfully it's not a massive species of tortoise and shouldn't grow too huge. Books have taught me what weeds he can eat so I recommend getting those. You'll soon know what to pick even as a newbie. If you're in the UK even in December you'll still find plantains, dandelions, nipplewort, nettles etc

Turtles and tortoises are not the same thing and have different needs. If you’re not committed to taking care of whichever one you get as if it’s your own then don’t get it. Kids get bored with pets so easily and stop wanting to take care of them all the time. As he said tortoises live for 30-50 years so they’re a VERY long term commitment. Turtles can have a similar lifespan. Pets for kids are fun but you need to be realistic in knowing that ultimately you will end up taking care of it when your child gets bored.

We had a couple of box turtles that ate meat. They'd come to the back door and bump into it , or bump your leg if you were in the backyard. We found them in the road , they had been run over. We nursed them back to health and they lived with us for 30+ years.

That is actually less for turtles, they live for 80 something years

I love tortoise ! I had a young Herman Tortoise 6 years ago . She was so awesome and had a great personality . I had her 3 years and it was winter in NC and we lost power and no heat in the house . I wrapped her tank to try to keep in heat . I ended up loosing her . She stopped eating and I took her to a vet that said he was a tortoise expert . Found out everything he told me was wrong . I just haven’t had the money to get another . She was a great eater and her fresh veggies !

I dont find them to be expensive at all. Green houses that are 2ft by 4ft are around 75 dollars and can house them for the first 8 years of life comfortably. But if you dont have a yard then yeah you gotta give them massive enclosures, but the 8ft by 4 ft green houses are also only 250

Question: For these guys what’s the temperature that they could be in? And if I get one and I keep them in the house should I take them outside often?

we have a russian tortoise and we also have a 70lb sulcata. We live in the mountains of Pennsylvania. they both have enclosures in the house for the winter and roam the house as well and spend the summer outside in the yard until night time when they come back in for bed because we have coyotes and stuff so its just safer for them, but you are right they arent for everyone and sometimes the price of their produce is insane but i wouldnt give them up for anything!

Not related to the video but I LOVE the fact that you give all your reptiles perfect, high quality habitats unlike some keepers. I hate seeing people who breed their animals and just keep everything in plain tiny tubs with paper towels and practically nothing else. It makes me sick.

I have a male Horsefield Tortoise. He will stay very small (about 6") and the climate they come from is very similar to where I live in northern NY. It was less expensive to buy his set up(enclosure, lighting, supplements) than the price of the pet. I grow vegetables myself and he eats so little he has the ability to share with us. I am able to make my own calcium powder and I grow arugula in his enclosure. He mows it off as soon as it has green, I'm glad I have TONS of seed😊.

I have and grew up with a sulcata and I talk more people out of those guys because people don’t understand the heating and diet needs of these beast, most people don’t believe me that they eat like cows, I have a separate fridge in my garage just for my sulcata. Also I live in Texas so I’m able to keep my guy outside in the shade almost year round. You basically need what it takes to take care or a small cow to take care of your tort.

I would get a smol tortoise if I had a decent size backyard in a similar climate to my current one (hot and humid for most of the year) and room for a stock tank inside with their UVB. I love these little guys, they're so cute and fun to pet.

I've always wanted a Sulcata tortoise that would mow the lawn for me. 😂 But I worry that it's just not hot enough year round in the UK to keep them outside, and they need too much space to keep them inside. 😢

Fabulous video! I miss my childhood tortoise. The medium sized ones are very easy to take care of if you have a backyard and lots of veggies and water. Cost of almost 0 if you grow your own greens, some fruit, hibiscus flowers. Indoors is far more expensive and may shorten their lifespans. It's like making a human live in a cage for their whole life.

I have a red footed tortoise that I keep indoor, we let him roam around the house. And my guess is he likes to be around people, since he always go under my father‘s feet or just smell everyone hands then stay there. Should we put him in the backyard instead of indoor?

Redfoots actually need way more fruit in their diets than most tortoises. A lot of the nutrition studies that based the diet you might be referencing came from comparisons to other species of tortoise, not redfoots.

Live in a 109^m apartment with an extra 20^m of sun filled, water proof veranda with a 12^m roof terrace with 5 hours direct sunlight. My open plan apartment connects to both terrace and veranda from the living room...the rest of it has doors but it's mainly open plan..with 140+^m free roam..my apartment is like a jungle I have nature and plants everywhere..and it is all completely safe..every outdoor area has been netted in for the safety of my cat!!he needs a friend and I would love to get one to keep him occupied when I can't!

just a random idea that popped into my head; what if taking care of a plant or animal was a requirement in schools, like a language credit. I bet it would help with stress levels, patience, teach time management skills, budgeting for food, habitat, water, soil, etc. teachers could make this a bell work assignment for high schoolers; a group of students from different class periods feed one of a few similar class pets, record its progress and compare it to the other pets each month. the same could be done for younger kids with plants, would love to hear other ideas.
