THis site doesn’t seem to work. It can’t find my VIN, is rejecting my valid 4-character license plate as too short, and search by make and model just doesn’t do anything. Too bad.

When I sold recently a 2013 Honda Civic with 82,000 miles. This are the methods that the dealers tried. 1) Two of them offered me $7,000 for the car. 2) The third one offered me $7,500 for the car. 3) I was excited by the $9,000 figure from the 4th dealer. But then he pulled out a piece of paper and started subtracting things like wear and tear, breaks, tires and so forth. His bottom line was $8,200 for the car. 4) Did an online submission, with Carmax, and they offered $9,500 for the car. But the online submission with Carvana, netted a result quote of $11,000. So it definitely pays to shop around selling your car. From $7,000 to start to finally $11,000. That is more than a 50% increase.

Great video. To your point, I went to a dealership to see what my truck would be worth as a trade in on a new (ordered SUV) as there were no new vehicles on the lot. They came back with a price $4500 less than Carmax. I told them what I could get from Carmax, and they said they could go higher but not match them. I sold it outright to Carmax for the higher amount. I will now negotiate a deal for a new SUV with cash in hand.

I am so glad I found this channel!! Got an email from Honda two weeks ago saying they wanted my 2019 Honda Fit. Before I went in to speak with anyone, I priced out my trade in value ON THEIR WEBSITE. Now I know things can fluctuate, but their website told me my trade in value was anywhere from 15k-18k. Went in and they were only going as far to give me 13k, and only had "new" cars to put me in. I gladly left after the constant "let me talk to my manager", "how about if we", and "have you ever thought of a lease?". Knowledge is power and I thank you guys for what you do!

My trick is I have three friends call asking about the type of car I'll be trading in, each one asks about a different feature they would like to have then they tell me who they talked to and I wait about a week then when I'm ready to buy I tell them what I want for my trade-in and it usually works.

I’m just thinking my purchase may get jacked up by the same amount or MORE than my trade-in. It’s happened before-THEN I allowed myself to get roped into an extended warranty and interior/exterior protection package. Several years later, I let myself get talked into trading in a vehicle I COULD afford(and had really no equity in having been acquired a few months prior)in for a car I really COULDN’t afford. What I did when I recently trade in my car was I searched for how much the same make and model was selling for online, and how many miles those vehicles generally had on them. So I knew about how much my car would sell for. I went to Carmax for a quote and I also asked the dealer I was buying my new car from how much they would give me for it. Carmax offered me about $3K less than the price my make and model was selling for online, and the dealer offered me $6K less than the price that it was generally selling for online (and my car had a lot fewer miles, the interior still looked brand new, I kept up to date with all of the maintenance and recalls, and I had a topnotch aftermarket stereo with high end speakers, a subwoofer installed, and a backup camera installed which did not originally come with the car). Needless to say, I told the dealer that I was selling my car to Carmax instead.

When I traded in my 2010 Corolla with 178k miles at my Toyota dealer, I showed them 3 on line offers from Carmax, and 2 other dealers. The offers ranged from 3500-4000. They gave me $4000 in trade on the Camry. That dealer put the Corolla on their used lot for $8500 and sold it in 3 days. I wish it was easier and safer to sell privately. Don't feel bad. You got a good price. Sure, you might have made more on a private sale, but there are a lot of potential hazards with listing a car online. Along with the legitimate buyers, there are a lot of buzzards out there who will try to con you out of your car, or even steal it. Right now it is very easy just to call Carvana, CarMax or a KBB dealer. You'll get a great price and you know they are good for the payoff.

When I go to buy a car and I'm trading in, I'm honest with them about what I'm trading in: paint condition, mechanical issues (if any), tire condition, and now wheel condition (after I got complained to about my last trade). I disclose all that information on purpose because I've already done extensive research on the values of my trade: retail, private party, and trade. I look on multiple sites to get those prices. My wife thinks I'm crazy doing it, but it's benefitted us multiple times. Another thing I do is right after disclosing the vehicle's condition, I follow up by saying, "Look, I know you're going to take this car, spend $500-$1500 reconditioning it, and you're going to turn around and sell it for X(retail). So, with that in mind, I'm willing to trade this car in for Y (retail - $2500 to give them $1000 profit if reconditioning is $1500). If I don't get Y, I'll just go sell it privately. However, I know you're looking for a quick buck, so let's make a trade deal now." Example: traded in a 2012 Sonata in 2016. Retail was $12,500. Trade value was $8,000. I offered to trade it in for $10,000. They accepted. Saw the car online a week later for $12,500. It sold after about a week on the lot. Dealer was happy, and I was happy. Honestly, as long as you're happy with the outcome, that's all that matters.

A dealership near me has an online calculator for your vehicle. You have to enter your VIN, miles, then questions about condition. It offered me $100. I just laughed about it. But the next day I got a call from some lady at the dealership, wanting me to bring it in for final inspection. I politely told her I just spent $400 on tires a month ago and had no interest in selling the entire car for $100. I couple weeks later sold it for $5900 private. I imagine they don't take advantage of seniors and women with trade-ins.

After giving this a lot of consideration and planning a snowbird vacation next winter from Mi to Fla I traded my 2020 Tacoma for a 2020 Passport. My Tacoma had 40K and the Passport has 20K miles. The Passport is Honda certified, my deal was an even trade, buy high but also sold high. I should have walked on this SHADY outfit but the discount was 9K and she wanted the color combination and all other dealers were closed at 8PM. There is some value that is being added by the dealer. 1. They do all the tiny ($1500) fix-ups. I don't have the time, knowledge, or structure/system/facilities to do that. 2. They have all the offered used cars in one place. Instead of going to 20 different private parties, I can go to one location and see 100s of cars (in normal times). 3. They help the buyer overcome their buyer's remorse. 4. They put their dealership name on the transaction. We have all heard about deals where the good dealers have just reversed the transaction to keep their good name. 5. They usually don't sell junk. The junk they take in goes directly to the auction. Yeah, it is expensive to deal with them and I don't. But they offer valuable services for those people who couldn't be bothered. And who did this old man think paid his salary/wages/commission for 40 years? It must certainly wasn't the dealership. It was the customer. Still, I love this channel and watch them all the time, because I don't do dealerships either.

In Vegas, they don't drive or inspect trade ins. They just go out to your car, start it and write down the miles. Then, they put the VIN and miles in the computer and deduct about 20% from the number that pops up. KBB instant cash offer on my car was $13,560. 3 dealers in Vegas offered $12k trade in and REFUSED to budge even a dollar. I'm selling it myself. It's a '13 MKZ V6 AWD with 74k miles. Ray, Most people will trade their car where they purchase a car and the reason is convenience. Also you forget to mention that Carvana is not necessarily the best deal. In fact and there are many examples of this. If I were looking for a car I would compare the franchise dealer of that brand to Carvana for two reasons first you can take advantage of the manufacture certified program and second the car generally sells less than Carvana does, Yes you may get less for your trade but the bottom line price may be less too. Sometimes I feel like you are advocating for the big box stores.

I don't think it's really people "falling for" being undercut on their trade-in. Consumers don't have as much power as you're making it seem like they do. This reminds me of being in college and selling your books back at the end of the year. You get offered scraps for the books you paid hundreds for and they'll turn around and sell them for 2-3 times what they just gave you. You have no other option. The deal is not getting better elsewhere and you have no leverage. It's no different with buying cars. Unless there's a dealership that is really hurting for a sale, you have zero leverage. You want a car that they have, period. If you don't buy it, someone else will.

Dealers with (napletons like pricing) will always lowball the trade in cause they have to ,to make up the difference they wont get from the posted false bait price ,only if they cant get you to sign for the extras/ or finance with their banks of course. Bait pricing like napletons is going on all over the us and in every city until everybody is aware of it and doesnt let a dealer get away with it so be careful when trading as they may just snag a few thousand from you with a quick lowball offer if you dont know your value . Some other factors that will mean a lower trade in offer. Many trading in using internet evaluation programs will often intentionally overvalue their car as to condition, put in as 'clean' when it is actually 'rough'. Involved in a major accident or more than 1, paint colors off from panel to panel. Trade in not of the same brand group of the dealer you are buying from. A Ford being traded in at a Honda dealer will not give you as good of a price as likely to wholesale it. (some carmakers in the past have done 'conquest' bonuses to consumers or dealers for trade ins of competitive brands) Poor maintenance, poorly done repairs, lots of 'parking lot' dings, scraped bumpers. A dealer will check Carfax and other services for accidents, maintenance, repair history, if recalls done. If a poor record then you will get a lower offer. Unfortunately even if maintained well, it may not show up on Carfax, etc. so a dealer's evaluator will assume it wasn't properly maintained. Needs major detailing or repairs. That is costly and better to wholesale out. Odd colors, owner installed accessories, not a brand with a dealer close by or a poor selling model. Vehicles with known serious problems like bad engines, transmissions (like CVT's in Nissans, Ford Focus & Fiestia with the unfixable DCT's). Costs to wholesale out including prep, cleaning, certain repairs, transportation costs, auction fees. Possibility taking a loss if vehicle breaks down or challenged in arbitration by a dealer who buys it at auction for conditions found in a post purchase inspection. Age (especially if more than 5 years old) and mileage (if above 10-12K year), over 100K.

Just ask them to go over the Manheim results they're looking at with you. Let them try and BS their way into why they would offer less. It's ok to accept up to $1k less than the results show, there are fees and recon expenses they'll have to pay to get that amount you'd/they see.

I had a dealership offer me 19500 for my 2020 volkswagen jetta se with 19000 miles. Much lower miles and in excellent condition than most cars of the same year. I was insulted. Always go to kbb and carvana and get a cash offer. Kbb offered me 22,300 cash. I owe 19000 on my loan and the dealership wanted to say I was upside down in my loan. I told them no and to have a good day. They called me an hour later with a trade in value of my car at 23000 and the payment of 400 on the new car like I wanted. I told them if they wanted to do a deal with me they would've done it on our first conversation.

I traded in my car recently to a dealership to buy a new one. I got a Carvana offer and told the dealership if they could match it I would trade it in. After a few back-and-forth they offered me $1000 less than Carvana however the car that I bought had a $500 rebate. So I did the deal and paid MSRP for the car plus $1500 of accessories which I could not get them to take off. If I didn’t buy a car I was just thinking of selling the car to Carvana and not buying anything because I have other cars as well. So that’s how I used Carvana to get close to what I wanted pricewise for my trade-in. I figured it was a lot easier and a lot less hassle than dealing with some of these online car buying services and some of them don’t have very good reputations and who knows if they would lowball me once they came.

gorno bros in woodhaven michigan tried to defraud me of the equity in my 2019 f 150 that has only 4900 miles. i am a disabled veteran and looked like a pidgeon to them. I also have 100% timely payment history..Gorno tried to give me $3100 for the f 150 and get me into a 2022 ford ranger..They purposefully inflated the real interest rate for the f 150 buyout to 8,54% when I actually qualified for 2.99% from creditors..They also inflated the new lease to 4.05% ..I have requested a "FRAUD" review and audit from ford corporate..Be careful if You do business with Gorno ford in woodhaven michigan..

It's not so much that people are falling for it, they just don't want to deal with all this BS. They don't want to have to go to school for a year to make sure they're getting a good deal on a car. It's absolutely ridiculous. Also many times they don't really have that much of a choice. Now if you're shopping around for a car and you have you know as much time as you want then sure if you fall for it, then shame on you. Otherwise though, like it's not so much that people are falling for it.

No no no. Sell it yourself. I had a dealer offer me 25k on a mint Tacoma at trade in. Said no thanks and sold for 30k with an online classified in less than a week. Paper work is easy. Only take cashiers check in person and call their bank to verify the check before signing the pink slip. You can save thousands by taking on the small inconvenience of selling yourself.

My negative equity is crazy. They’re saying my 2023 car with less than 8k miles is only worth 27k but I owe way more. What’s the best solution sale it to somebody and then the remaining balance on the loan will they just add that to the new car I buy?(need more space for my kids)

Hi there. I have less than 2 months left on my 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R lease. Residual is a little less than $18,900. Currently it has almost 7,100 miles. All is great with it inside and outside (thanks to covered parking). No issues. This is a front-wheel drive car and would really like an AWD or RWD car instead of keeping this one. Checked a few websites, like Kelly Blue Book, Carmax, etc. for like models and the price ranges from $28K to $31K. I know I have positive equity. Is this good leverage to purchase a new car? I only have that car and am not looking to use public transportation.

They can simply see what that car is going for retail and base trade off that and what condition vehicle is. I had 2 places low ball me and they lost my business do to there lack of trade in value.knowledge. No way I would take $2500 lower than KBB low side in trade value. CarMax offers way lower than actual trade value.

As a UCMangler for ..oh...quite a few years, most of what this says is semi-ttue; Bottom line? A mangler always thinks to himself: what is somebocy going to write a check for on this trade. whether its a wholesaler, an auction or we will keep it on the lot, what is somebody going to pay for this? Then work backwards from there * HEY.............HERES A TIDBIT: IF YOU DONT LIKE THE "VALUE" THE DEALER GIVES YOU?? SELL IT THYSELF!* Any clue.................ANY CLUE the amount of 'undisclosed' garbage, damage and needed work on a persons trade that they dont tell the dealer about? Always 3 sides to the story

I’ve been looking to trade my 2011 Murano for a while now. Dealerships continue to lowball me at around $1500, but Carvana took the cake by offering about $350. Seriously!? By the way, KBB average trade value is around $3K, while the private party average is about $4500. It’s so much easier (in my mind) to trade, but surely not worth either of those insulting offers.

Your vehicle is probably auctioning around 3000. Why would they give you all that when it costs $1000 to send something to auction, leaving only $500 of profit. Maybe if they’re making money on a vehicle you purchase it could work out, but it will be $500-$1000
