2022 was The year after Covid and we just wanted to go to Mexico. Enjoy some nice weather and good food, is that too much to ask? Mexican Military had other plans for our HDT Big Rig and for us the border was shut down!
We did the research but did not plan on the Military to intervene. So...here we are thinking about doing it again. Are we hard headed? Or are we stupid? To move forward, we must look back.
We are driving south but headed to the East Coast. Wait?!? Does that make sense? It does if you want to detour down to Mexico before you get to the Georgia coast...but the eclipse and totality come before that...which means Arkansas but wait, we're getting off track a bit. Let's watch the video.
We are not Snow Birds but we do like nice warm weather and heading west is the best.
Come join our Facebook Group, Big Truck Big Travels to get more details on our travels such as Alaska itinerary, annual costs and such.

RV Camping
We like to "Switch it Up" between resorts and campgrounds and boondocking is always an option.
We draw inspiration from Keep Your Daydream KYD, Less Junk More Journey, Finding Our Someday and Changing Lanes. We normally travel in an HDT similar to RU-vid channels Suite Travels, Switch it Up and Watts on Wheels. I also get some ideas from the editing style of Happily Ever Hanks (Happilyeverhanks) #thankshanks and believe it or not, I actually learned something from MRBeast Mr Beast video's as well.
Our journey is the destination. We want to share in our experiences in our discovery of What's Next.
I get my music from:
Epidemicsound.com
Tracks:
In the Red Soil by Bonnie Grace
Time is Running fast by Jon Bjork
Amazon Shop (no extra charge to you)
A convenient way to see (or buy) the items you see in the video's which may help in your adventure.
www.amazon.com/shop/bigtruckb...
We use the TSD card for diesel fuel and save a bundle each time we fill up our Big Rig. We also use it to fill up our Onan generator.
The big blue boards (XL version) we use sometimes to get us "un-stuck" is from:
Gotreads.com
Our Class C is built by Thor Motorcoach on a Ford F550 chassis. It's a production build Magnitude model XG32. We tow our red Jeep Wrangler Sahara behind it. We've made some modifications to it so that we can boondock comfortably. Lithium batteries, Victron 3000w multi-plus inverter, dual alternators charge while traveling and mods to the water system greatly enhance it's boondocking capabilities.
Our extreme completely custom 5th wheel is built on a semi-trailer chassis with air suspension and air brakes. Completely loaded it weighs 42,000 lbs rolling down the highway. And we do roll down the highway nearly every week. You see, we believe that if your home has wheels they should be used.
Vehicles:
2016 Volvo VNL780 "Voyager"
2016 Smart fortwo "Pathfinder"
2019 SpaceCraft Custom built semi-trailer 5th wheel "Orion"
2023 Thor Magnitude XG32 Class C "Curiosity"
2017 Jeep Wrangler Sahara "Artemis"
Power system:
3250 watts of solar with Panasonic panels
30.1 KWH of Lithium batteries
2- 4K watt Magnum Inverters deliver power as if we are on shore power
2- 4K watt 240v Cotek Inverters deliver additional power for our LG Mini split HVAC and stove
Coachnet is our roadside assistance company we use but hopefully we don't use them too often. LOL
We are not sponsored by Whataburger but I do enjoy them anytime I can get my hands on one. They used to be just out of Texas but they have expanded.
BIg Truck Big Travels video's are based on our personal experience and not meant nor portrayed as experts in anything we do or say. It's our life on the road and our opinions are not meant to be construed as advice. Enjoy life on the road.

That is very possible but we enjoy the culture, food and the people of Mexico. Our experiences have been good South of the Border but it is true you have to be aware of your surroundings. As in a city such as Chicago or Los Angeles there are good parts and bad parts. We always strive to be in the good parts so that our experience is safe and enjoyable. So far we have been successful. You were not denied or refused entry to Mexico. Pretty obvious that crossing is not designed for trucks who have separate entry points. Nogales would have let you through you just have to use the Mexico Truck entry points, and you'll be fine. Which is what the border officer was trying to tell you. It's still a truck. Their rules, and it's our responsibility to know where we can cross. Get a Nexus or Fast for global entry and speed up the process. Love my Nexus. (Canada US entry program, also good for any global entry point, and includes pre-check when you fly.) And only $50. I went to Italy came back, did eye scan, gave receipt, no questions. Find the easy path.
@bigtruckbigtravels
@bigtruckbigtravels Месяц назад
We went to San Luis and they told us that unless we were commercial or selling the truck in Mexico (both with proper documents) that a semi-truck is not allowed in Mexico. Period. And we were denied entry because we tried in San Luis at the commericial port of entry.

Interesting conversation at the border. Having travelled internationally a lot for work, I've learned a couple things. - don't argue with the folks at border control. - the folks at border control will not typically tell you the "why," just what you can or can't do. Not sure why you want to take your rig into Mexico but good luck.

If you take the cost to replace your unit NEW times 26% I think that is what the Mexican government will charge you if for any reason, theft, it burns up, etc, any reason you do not take it back across the border they will tax you. If it is new or nice and you like it do not take it over the border into Mexico. I am not against traveling to Mexico, just do not be flashy at all like being in the inner city. Take an older vehicle you can resell when you get back. Even people that want to live down there are advised against taking an expensive car across the border to drive, they are told to buy a vehicle there. Not at all saying not to travel there, just need to drive something of less value and stay safe and healthy, I really enjoy your videos. BTW even 1 ton pickups are getting turned away at some border crossings. Had a video pop up in my feed from a channel I do not know a couple weeks ago and they had to turn around with their dually and 5th wheel. I know Mexico wants the RV people to cross and spend money but they are turning back vehicles that get stolen down there to often or even remotely commercial but not being used as commercial.

Can i ask you about your solar setup? Rob got us a victron & 520ah of lithium ion batteries installed in the winter. Then we ended up get 400W of solar in quartzite. Well now we got the bug and now want to be able to boondock even more places and without having to turn on our generator. it looks like yall have a good amount on top of your rig. We've just bought 6 more panels at 375w bifacial each. I think we might buy a couple more batteries as well. How much do yall have & what can you run off it? We have 3 ACs and know we probably wont be able to run all 3, but wondering if yall ever run 2 ac's off what you have. And if so, do you think its enough? Trying to decide what all we need to get before heading to boondock all over utah this summer, knowing itll be hot there june & july.

We have 3250 watts on the roof and 30 kwh of Lithium batteries in a 24v configuration. We have 4 4K watt inverters which power everything on batteries. We have a 36K btu mini-split system which we can run on batteries... and do. The last few nights have been warm as we have dry camped so we have run the A/C overnight. Very efficient, we wake up around 75% SOC and with full sun are 100% by early afternoon during this time of year. On solar, go big or stay home! The more the better. Also, as large a Lithium bank as you can handle, 15 kwh or more.

Border Information Note: Vehicle permits are not required for Baja, northern Sonora State & Quintana Roo. You cannot get a vehicle permit if you hold Mexican Residente Permanente status, you can if you hold Residente Temporal. Important note (Jun 3, 2016): I am getting reports of people being refused permits for 3/4 ton trucks & up. This is because they are taking the GVWR figure off the registration or door sticker, which is the max loaded weight of the truck & cargo. In these cases the 3500 kg limit is exceeded. Banjercito's own website is contradictory on this subject (see images for downloading below). Problem crossings appear to be the Guatemalan border, El Paso, Laredo and la Paz (ferry from Baja). I have had no reports from Nogales which is my recommended crossing. In the interim, I strongly suggest anyone with a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup, download these files and print them out and I also suggest taking your unloaded truck to a commercial scale and get a print out of its unloaded weight. Ask them to put the VIN number on it if they can. To confuse matters more, the SAT website (they set the laws) states it's 3500 Kg (7710 lbs) cargo capacity. This is NOT GVWR. GVWR is the safe max loaded weight of a truck to where the axles and braking system (whichever is less) can withstand the load. GVWR is the Curb Weight of the truck plus the maximum cargo capacity (including Pasenger weights) set by the manufacturer for safe operation. It is NOT just cargo capacity, as they appear to be interpreting it as. GVW is the weight of a vehicle, loaded or unloaded with cargo, at any given time. GVW is fluid number, GVWR is not. I believe this all boils down to an issue with translation from Spanish into English in Banjercitos documentation. SAT sets the regulations, Banjercito applies them. Update September 2022 Ok here is the latest. This issue is still ongoing. Banjercito showed me a memo stating that SAT now considers GVWR and Cargo Capacity to be treated as the same (It is not). That makes the paragraphs below more or less useless. However, I did find a helpful agent who told me you should do this is you have a 3/4 or 1 ton: 1) Take a photo of the truck hitched to the RV with the front plate clearly showing. Print it out on a full sheet. 2) Only cross at a crossing that has an Aduana office.. (Nogales, Laredo, Mission, La Paz) 3) Try to get the permit in normal fashion . If they won't give it to you try showing them the picture. 4) If still refused, go and see the Aduana, he should inspect your rig and determine it is being used for recreational purpose and provide you with an exemption form banform

We decided to not take Nomad Monster into Mexico. In Canada our Volvo is registered as "Motorhome" and the trailer is registered as "travel trailer", but in Mexico they don't go by registration or current use, they go by what the intended use was when it was manufactured. In Mexico ONLY Mexicans can drive commercial vehicles. So, if you made it past the border and got stopped at the next checkpoint, they would probably seize the truck and leave you with possibly the trailer. If you are lucky, you could hire a Mexican driver to get it back, but not likely. Also, you are only allowed one vehicle - you have three. Truck and trailer can be split between the two of you, but the car is one too many. We have the Volvo, the trailer, the bike and the car... so we cannot go in. Now we have a Jeep, we can park on the US side and make day trips. Good luck with it...

It's not for everybody but we enjoy the food, culture and people.

Sounds like your rig is just too large for that crossing. The roads ahead of you can't handle the size or weight. He gave you 2 other crossing points as alternatives?

Mexico considers our truck commercial and this border does not handle commercial vehicles. So he directed us to another border. We're not commercial but Mexico has no grey area. So when we tried to cross at a commercial border entry they denied us since we don't have commercial documentation stating why we're going into Mexico. On the commercial side, they don't accept "vacation" or "RV travel" as a commercial purpose.

Interesting, it sounds like you won't be taking that rig to Mexico. Safe travels.

@michaelbissen1946 unfortunately, Michael, that's correct. Unless we can get a special exemption... which is highly unlikely... which is maybe a good thing. 😆
