Instead, they were calm during the calibration which tricked the game into thinking that "calm" was their level of "stress". Then, whenever they would have any reaction, the game would think that they were beyond stressed and immediately max out.

Maybe it's the same reason as why first person shooters are getting dumbed-down and less skill-cap, making them simpler and easier to appeal to casuals rather than making them advanced and competitive. Casuals seem to be where the money is at. That's just my assumption, so if the adverts (finding casuals) look dumb, that is because that is what they are going for. The type of game we might like to play probably wouldn't be advertised that much, some games you never hear about can sometimes be the best~ ;)

The game works, they just didn't calibrate it correctly. You are suppose to do the calibration when stressed. Then try to remain calm during gameplay. Instead, they were calm during the calibration which tricked the game into thinking that "calm" was their level of "stress". Then, whenever they would have any reaction, the game would think that they were beyond stressed and immediately max out.
