Great tip! Couldn't be more accurate. I call this 'redlining my engine' - this usually does happen when I'm playing well - I keep pushing and pushing to the point where I red line my engine and blow a gasket. Great reminder.

I've progressed where my tempo is beautiful and my hinges are very loose.... at the range! I'm now progressing where I see better tempo and sometimes loose hinges during a round. This is a process, but things are smoothing out during rounds, stringing several holes together that blow my mind, positively. What's to loose by trusting these changes, been knocking them into the woods for 30 years, so I have nothing to lose by "letting go". I am getting closer. Thank you sir!

Try swinging at no more than 50% when playing. Just tell yourself to do this before every shot. Do a few easy practice swings so you get the easy feel. You can also work on this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MmLjEoyqEIE.html We all want distance when playing. You need to fight this urge. Think fairways and greens for a while. @@paulwilsongolf Thanks (again!) Paul. Yeah, 50% is what I write in black sharpie on my scorecard each round. I'm simply putting too much pressure on myself which translates to tension in the arms. I am aware of this, I'm battling to change this. At times, 50% results in a duck hook (cringe) off the tee, so I have only the middle of the fairway to conquer next. ;)

I think, as we go along, we also tend to de-emphasize the parts of the swing we think aren't important and go harder at the others. For example, as you say, we think "quicker, faster turn" but we also forget stance, ball position, coil, follow through. It's as if either we say to ourselves "those are easy, I've already got them" or you are so invested in turning faster you forget about everything else. The additional mental strain also drains us physically and fatigue plays a part. The gradual deterioration of one's swing as the round, or session, goes on is something that's always fascinated me but I've never seen addressed until now. Thanks, Paul.

you have totally changed the way I play golf. the one thing that I have learned also is that it is very important to take two or three loose practice swing until I get that tempo feel. I used to just step up and hit and would forget what I have learned. btw, played my muni the other day and the fairway bunker is 270 out and told my son that it is not in play until I hit my drive and rolled into it. not bragging but I was never so happy to hit a fairway bunker. if you are ever on the east coast please let us know as I would love to attend a clinic etc.

Great tip Paul will be using this on the course as a good check point .So many times usually when I’m having a good round I lose my tempo or get the yips with my driver so this lesson will help. I also think that a more compact swing and slower can also help. My late father played off 1 but if he lost his tempo he’d keep his feet together and hit amid iron just to get back on track that worked too. Once again thanks and greetings from 🇬🇧

This is great video on cause & effect. This happens to me too often, I'm playing well like 4 over thru 14 holes and then finish 6 over for the last 4 holes because I start slicing my drives. I assumed it was fatigue but I now understand that in trying too hard I was actually locking my wrists. Thanks Paul, this was very eye opening.

I never realized that tight wrists keep the face open. I’ve been practicing with loose wrists and boy is Paul ever right. Loose wrists and arms allow the club face to come back to square. See his how to control the club face video for more details. I’ve been struggling with club face control forever, that whole time the answer has been loose wrists and arms!!! I never would have figured this out by myself. Thanks Paul. I’m off to your website and see what else you can teach me

Thank you Paul! This video sums up my driver swing. I don't hinge and rehinge, I tighten up, I try to hit it farther, I use my arms.... How can I get myself to stop even though I know I'm doing this!?!?! Do I need shock treatment? :) I'm going out to the range today. I'm going to try to replicate the proper swing AWAY from golf balls. If I can't do that, I see no reason to hit any balls. Then....assuming I can quasi-replicate the key points in an effortless smooth 50% swing, I might try hitting a bucket of balls. Pray for me!
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 4 года назад
You keep trying to always hit your best shots which is NOT the way to think. Sometimes (like now) you are working on something. So work on it. Forget the ball and how great you think you are going to hit it. Now it is about to slow down. So your goal is to do a full swing with your driver and hit it 2/3 distance. That is the goal. So keep doing it until you can do it from the first ball to the last. Then again the next day and the next. At that point you have it mastered. Then use your legs for more power. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cVhtL-d1B9Y.html It it truly mind boggling that everyone keeps always trying to hit their best shots and they want instant results. Any change it make I think this is going to take me 1 month to master and I do it daily. I am working on things right now so in my mind I don't care about the score right now. I am trying to repeat the new moves in practice swings, with practice balls and on the course. The scores will come later.

I love it! "Go down to 50 percent." Thx! PS All your instruction seems genuinely revolutionary, but when you say the phrase "come out of it," I think that is a vague comment that lacks specificity and usefulness. In other words, I'm not sure I (or others) know what it means. I think you do a good job explaining that it means a "chicken wing" or a "look up," but maybe it's best to avoid that vague phrase "come out of it." I think most people don't get it. Cheers & thx

Loving your tips and trying real hard to adopt your methods. I suspect I am having issues with keeping flexible wrists without flexing the left elbow (particularly with my driver) as I am hitting almost every ball off the toe of the club, losing distance and going down the right side. I am wondering if I should address the ball at the heel of my driver to compensate or if you have any other suggestions.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 4 года назад
Toeing is you lifting up which moves the club back. It's better than heeling so that's a good thing. You just need to slow down and loosen up. If this is new stuff for you then you will want to keep trying to see the result it is having on your swing. Remember, you are building a swing. The ball will come later. Paul Wilson Golf Thanks Paul. This is new to me. I am acutely aware of this inner desire to hit the ball. An unconscious desire which the more rational part of my brain is trying to overcome right now. It will take a bit of time and there will be backward steps but I can see your approach works for me so worth persevering.

Paul, all your tips and advice are solid. Thank you. I wonder about the dreaded shank. That creeps in every now and again. And it’s an absolute game killer. Is it the same problem of too quick and too tight?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 4 года назад
Glad you like them. What clubs do people shank? Shorter ones right? Shorter clubs are shorter so you bend over more. When you do the body mass overhangs your toe line. So you get to the top and the weight rolls forward so you shank it. Stand taller with shorter clubs. Feel like you are going down not forward. Look up to the sky then look down until you can see the club and ball clearly not your toes (peripheral is fine). If you clearly see your toes you are too low. Fixed.

Would you say that's a good way to start the round as well? I've recently started my last few rounds with the 50% mentality and it's helped a lot. I know as my confidence increases, I'll swing faster anyway and the smooth start seems to keep me out of early trouble.

Yes, definitely do this. Why not start off easy and gradually speed up once you get a few holes in or just stick to that pace. As you've seen, it works.

Another good one Paul. Just one question, is a tempo issue can lead to shank? Thanks a lot, greeting from France.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 4 года назад
If you are quick you are hitting. This could roll you on your toes and contribute to a shank. Here is the shank fix: What clubs do people shank? Shorter ones right? Shorter clubs are shorter so you bend over more. When you do the body mass overhangs your toe line. So you get to the top and the weight rolls forward so you shank it. Stand taller with shorter clubs. Feel like you are going down not forward. Look up to the sky then look down until you can see the club and ball clearly not your toes (peripheral is fine). If you clearly see your toes you are too low. Fixed.

Started my mishits on hole 12, and couldnt figure it out in time. So, if i go back to 50% during rd to regroove my tempo, am I suppose to take more club?

You might have to take one more club but you might surprise yourself and hit the 50% shots just as far. You would have certainly got your swing back and finished better.

Deep rough you play it off the back foot with the hands ahead and get it back into the fairway. Lighter rough you can open the face a little and do a normal swing. I will do a tip on it into the future.

But head speed is distance. So how do you swing easy and keep the distance?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 4 года назад
The loose the wrists the faster the club swings. Something that is looser swings faster than something that is tighter. So hitting hard feels good and powerful but the harder you hit, the tighter your wrists, the slower the club swings, the more you manipulate the face, the more chicken wing, the more sending it over the top you do. See. Looser give you 5 things to hit it longer with less effort. Try it. You'll see.

@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 4 года назад
Stop trying to kill it. The harder you hit, the more you will look to see what you are hitting. This is human nature. Hit it then look for it. I have a tip coming on this. The cause of topping is hitting and buckling the arms or both. These are both hitting so I know you are too tight and trying to hit it too hard. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cVhtL-d1B9Y.html and loosen your wrists: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6ZeTqcz2pmE.html

Until I found Your videos, they are exceptional, in that they explain, in laymen’s terms what’s going wrong and why. Really? You should know better. It is not going to go any farther. If you swung harder and you hit it twice as far I would tell you to keep doing it but you're now. Now your percentage you could miss it goes up with no payoff. The casinos here play the percentages. You need to too.
