Allie, you and Spencer are two of the most real people I stumbled onto and follow. As a former college runner at the much smaller Division III level, I admire your ability and the tenacity in which you pursue something you are so passionate about. I have focal dystonia now, which has made it challenging for me to run. Watched you rise up when you get knocked down, which inspires me and others to keep on fighting. Beyond that, you guys are honest, approachable, humble and have so much fun together - hard not to root for you. Keep on chasing your dreams.

I ran for a division I program in the early 90s. The response to any poor race was that we were fat. I eventually developed disordered eating that continued for a few years. I once passed out in a museum and also at work. Those were the rock bottom moments for me, and I was then able to address it and move forward. I still battle the thoughts sometimes and have tried so hard not to pass it to my daughter. Thank you for speaking out Allie and doing your part to try to break this cycle. My favorite part of the video though was when you lit up talking about Georgie. He is adorable!

You are very wise for someone so young, grasshopper -- don't let it go to your head. Two questions: how has appearing on RU-vid affected your well being, both positive and negative (or neutral)? How closely do you monitor the races of your closest running rivals during the season, and how does your race strategy change by who else is competing? Best wishes.

Forgot to ask so for next time you do a Q&A I'd love to hear about professional running contracts - how they work, what you have to do, what they give you & expect from you, how you decided who to go with, when to quit, is it enough to live on or do you have to work a job too, etc etc -- obviously some of it is secret squirrel but I'd love to hear about them

I loved it all but I would say the part where you said you didn't know what Allie will be doing in 10 years and that you were willing to just keep the response as 'I'm working on figuring it out'. If I can recommend a trail race just to pique your interest, I'd run the Dipsea. It's the oldest trail race in the States, a 7.5 miler in California. A lot of people will push to ultras but a 50k can be a pretty big jump.

I've had anorexia and bulimia for 17 years and have fully recovered. My overly skinny body is nothing that I miss. It's just not part of a healthy life. Muscles are more valuable and much more pretty in my view. I hope it will change for you as well. It is probably not you but the eating disorder who misses that body. And probably not even the body but the feeling associated with it. Let go of the residual eating disorder thoughts. A strong and healthy body is one of the best things you can get in life ❤.

I had asked a former runner turned journalist if she would consider writing a book with women in mind since they are far more prone to have eating disorders and or disordered eating habits . Well, she declined, so I am wondering if you would feel so inclined ? Certainly what you have experienced over time has given you tremendous insight into dealing with food as a runner .Such a book is in deep need of being written . Poor eating , as relates to female distance runners seems to be quite prevalent . Also, dealing with injury and recovery.The female runner, I feel ,would welcome such a book . I can think of no one more qualified to write it considering how much you have been through in your running career .Your honesty, bravery and willingness to be so vulnerable has won you great admiration and respect .I feel it would be read by many runners .Thanks for all your fun and informative videos . Best wishes and continued success in your career.

Most college athletes running career ends during or after college. The best strategy to selecting a college is academic goals and scholarship opportunities (if applicable). Think long term life gols first, athletics second.
@allie_ostrander

I agree with this, but I also think that there are a lot of schools that can offer a great academic experience, and the athletic experience might be more individualized.That's just my opinion though.

Did a man/woman or men/women come into your life? It seems like the one sure way to loose focus. Finding time for a mate unfortunately usually turns into a distraction. As for running at your level it seems to me that it's more mental then physical. You were too small and frail at your best, don't worry about food and putting on a little weight, turn that added weight into muscle & strength, you already have the staminia and the mental strength, and killer instinct. Don't try and fight through injuries, more often then not it compounds the issue. You're best is still ahead of you, don't give up. I doubt I have to worry about that, you don't look like the type that gives up. Good luck, stay with it!! A fan from Alaska...

I personally would love to see a strength training video. It's not intuitive, how to do it--like how much to lift. You see vids of successful long distance runners lifting surprisingly heavy weights. For example, I remember a social media post where Aisha Praught-Leer was single-leg hip-thrust lifting what looked like an insane amount, with her tiny body. Is this something that naturally talented athletes are just better at, they just have better strength? Or should I be training like a sprinter in the gym if I want to PR in the 5k?
@allie_ostrander
@allie_ostrander 2 года назад
What you do in the weight room definitely depends on what you want to get out of it. If you want to improve maximum strength, running economy, and explosiveness, you will be lifting heavier weights. I do think there's a misconception that distance runners should be lifting low weight and high reps, but that isn't necessarily true.

I've been cross training while I'm waiting for it to get better but I'm not sure what caused it in the first place as I was already focusing on strengthening my knees.
