You shouldn't enjoy the pakled you should fear them. They represent a very successful kind of evil. Although deemed dimwitted are able to master interstellar space travel and although seen as pushovers can easily manhandled other species in physical combat. The pallets don't seem to care about catharsis(learning or self correction)I believe they are not only scavengers but also cold blooded murders. Who simply extract information for personal gain-which is never achieved-and when that is successful they probably cut your throat and toss your body into space. I believe they don't care revelations or sentient personal growth of any kind. They want what they want and they want it now! The animated series when the ensigns run into their territory of space where aghast only to atumble upon a grave yard of ships. The question is what did they do with all the bodies!?

I have this theory that the Pakleds' language is like the Tamarians, where their language get mucked by the universal translator, except instead of memes, the Pakleds sound 'simple'.

Terrans probably do one of two things 1) Wipe Pakled out seeing them as inferior and too cunning to allow in their ranks. Or maybe that's what they want, a cunning race- however the flipside is while they're good at being devious they suck working with others. 2) They conscript Pakleds but torture the hell out of them to destroy resistance, then give the Pakled Emperor an agony collar to force compliance. Pakled are forced into groups where they're herded for fighting on the frontlines (Borg assimilate Pakled for tough resistance, Terrans can just use them as 40k Ogryns). Particularly cunning Pakled individuals could rise the ranks of Imperial Starfleet, as each Pakled is out for themselves not for their race now.

I was just watching this TNG episode. This is one of the few instances where Worf was absolutely correct, but as usual, they ignored his advice. It made no sense to send the chief engineer alone to an unknown vessel belonging to a species you barely know.

Warf should have just said, "NO! if it is so simple, send a red shirt" or, "I will go with him." I think that the head of security has the responsibility to not let Ryker's action go without conditions.

@@pforce9 In an alternate universe where the way Starfleet operates does reflect it being a military organization Riker has been kicked out of the organization for while they could have been avoided by a more competent person. Same applies to Picard in a way tho. Stating that Starfleet is not a military...the hell you are not. The organization that has a monopoly on force is the UFP's goverment and Starfleet is the whip of said government. So go to hell Picard, hypocrite incarnate.

I've got this feeling Pakleds would be oddly effective against the Borg.

IIRC the two are from the same region of space, but avoid each other. Apparently the Packled aren't considered worth assimilating while the Borg are seen as too dangerous and unlikely to fall for a ruse...at least not in the way they want.

not really pakleds rely on ambush and deceit. ambush on the solvang and ambush on the cerritos. a starfleet luna class ship like the USS Titan can go toe to toe with them no problem. if starfleet deemed them a threat pakleds are pretty much screwed as they would most likely be blockaded by a fleet of ships and any pakled ship encountered would be impounded and arrested. and starfleet wouldn't be sending cali class ships after them either we're talking cruisers like the nebula class and above.

@@mattluvet yes as boimler pointed out that hte new pakled ships look like they've incorporated tech from at least 30 species. but if you watchd hte new episodes they mention that the pakled homeworld has been destroyed by a super bomb and evidence is pointing at captain freemans involvement.

Thus illuminating the value of the perspective that _anyone_ who bears you malice should be treated as a serious threat, no matter how much of a joke they are considered!

To be fair, Lower deck proved there far more dangerous than given credit.

_All_ Star Trek since the first JJ movie has been an unconvincing skinsuit with "Star Trek" awkwardly stamped on it. The one possible exception is Riker's scene in Picard.

Those two statements are not exclusive. They could be seen as benign, hence as a result of this view, there is limited information about them.

With so many species in their own territory let alone outside it, they might have just not had time to send any one.

Lower decks is the best new trek! It’s funny and filled with tons of references to TNG/DS9/VOY but the show has alot of heart too

no, no, you 'abandon' a 'highly advanced' 'secret' warship packed full of 'technology' and let it drift into their space. Each item is rigged with something pathogenic. It's just regular tech, no actual weapons, but the pakleds would tear it apart and affix it to their own without a second thought. They're a species with limited verbal communication, and no capacity for delayed gratification. They wouldn't check anything you gave them.

Ferengi, if I recall correctly. Also, their stupidity is more of a natural trick. Make themselves seem slow and harmless when in reality they can be pretty damn dangerous. Also, according to their description when choosing to play as one in Star Trek Online: The Pakleds are a largely nomadic species that often trade, scavenge or steal from other species for their technology. Pakleds have underdeveloped verbal communication skills. Due to this, many people underestimate them, thinking that they are too intellectually challenged to be devious, which they use to their advantage. While most Pakleds are politically unaligned, a few have chosen to join Starfleet, where they have demonstrated that they can become more than simple nomads or traders.

While they truly aren't particularly intelligent, the Pakled seem to be fully aware of how benign and unintelligent they appear to other species, and they take full advantage of it. Their managing to snatch some tech from the Romulans should be a clear indicator that they're far more intelligent than they let on.

Maybe, they don't have uncommon nouns? Not for anything beyond their own names, and when someone introduces themselves of a species they've not met, that person's name becomes the species name...But that expands to general appearances. A human female captain gets called Janeway because they met Janeway, a bald human captain would be Picard, etc.

The Packleds lucked out, the Enterprise had to depart immediately to get Dr. Pulaski to the star base. Otherwise, I agree, I'm sure they would be compelled by their general orders to neutralize any developing threat to the Federation that they encountered, with dispatch.

I have an answer for you. I enjoy "STLD" very much, but I see it has a _great flaw,_ one that Roddenberry deliberately engineered out of TOS, but was deliberately engineered _into_ STD! To understand any given episode, you already have to be familiar with the series, or even the whole genré! Like here; if you had been a casual viewer of TNG and had missed this episode, or forgot about it, then you would not understand much of the STLD episode entitled.... 🤔 Well, I don't know, the first one with the Packleds. I, for one, object to that familiarity being a requirement because it impedes people new to the Star Trek genré from becoming Trekkies. (The word "Isoteric" comes to mind, but I can't think how to spell it, so I won't use it).

​@@TheNoiseySpectator i highly disagree on your assessment. i am a new trekkie fan yet i adore it when there is consistency on the show. and i get to learn about the lore better and better by being introduced to old facts and pieces of lore such as these, then i would be able to learn more about them from old episodes of other shows. discovery on the other hand butchered the lore and made it very inconsistent, changed alot of the races, while lower decks on the other hand respected the lore and presented the show consistent with the star trek universe

Borg will probably take their technology as resources but don't assimilate the Pakleds. The only species I can remember that the Borg won't assimilate are the Kazon. At least when it comes to Seven of Nine's statement.

Lower decks, personally, I find it dull, unimaginative and a departure from what star trek was. Im not gonna bother watching it anymore

Star Trek became a joke when Discovery came out. At least Lower Decks is self-aware about their joke status.

@The_Enterprise Honestly, Lower Decks feels VERY MUCH like Star Trek to me. Discovery and Picard don't -- they're a disgrace to the name, honestly -- but Lower Decks is actually GOOD. It has that classic Star Trek TNG charm, well-developed and likable characters who play off of each other well, creative episode concepts, and a respect for existing series lore (something Discovery and Picard definitely do NOT have!). I don't feel like Lower Decks is a joke, nor like it's not trying to be Star Trek. Rather, I feel like Lower Decks is the first real Star Trek we've had since Enterprise was canceled. Orville aside. And I, for one, can't wait to see more!

Man you're really missing out if you can't find anything to love in Lower Decks. It couldn't be more clear that it's written by people who understand and love what Trek is all about.
