Intro: 0:00
1. Hurricanes and Severe Weather 0:21
South Carolina has the potential for severe weather, including hurricanes, tornadoes and thunderstorms.
2. Heat and Humidity 2:40
This is my favorite thing about living in South Carolina. The Summer months are very hot and humid.
3. Insects 4:00
There are a lot of insects in South Carolina, including mosquitoes, palmetto bugs (roaches), fire ants, and more!
4. Alligators and Snakes 4:57
There are alligators and snakes in South Carolina, and some of the snakes are poisonous.
5. Tourism 5:51
The natural beauty and history of South Carolina brings in a lot of tourist every year, especially in the Beach Towns, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach.
6. Traffic 6:33
With all of the tourist and people moving to South Carolina, there is a lot of traffic in certain areas.
7. Sales Tax 7:00
South Carolina has a relatively high sales tax, but it has one of the lowest property taxes in the nation for a primary residence.
8. Small Cities 8:00
There are no large Cities in South Carolina, at least when comparing them to other large cities with Skyscrapers, like: Atlanta, LA, New York City, Miami, etc...
9. Lack of Seasonal Changes 8:52
Due to the warm weather, a large portion of South Carolina does not have much for seasonal changes. It very rarely snows in Charleston, and you will not see beautiful fall colors in some areas.
10. Pollen and Allergies 9:24
There is a lot of pollen in South Carolina!
11. Flooding 9:55
There is a risk for flooding, especially in the low country. Flooding can occur during a hurricane or tropical storm. Flooding can also occur during a heavy rain, especially when there is a high tide.
12. Low Housing Inventory/Expensive homes and rent 11:17

People here really don't know how to drive. Wait until you get stuck behind someone doing 10 under in the left lane for about 50 miles. Or that comes to a complete stop in the road before making a right turn. Another thing makes me crazy is SC drivers will pull over and stop for a hearse, but not for a police car, ambulance or fire truck.

Ive lived in South Carolina for almost 15 years now. It’s that that bad. The weather is more dry than humid. We only get really heavy rain in spring and sometimes summer. Hurricanes aren’t too bad. Tornados are pretty rare here in Charleston. Thunderstorms are not bad at all. It’s just normal rain with some thunder. Mosquitoes don’t come out in the winter. But, flooding is an ongoing occurrence in downtown. When pollen comes, sometimes it will be bad but it just gets washed away with spring showers. Overall, South Carolina is an excellent place to live.

Traffic - deadly two lane Roundabouts. Taxes - vehicle annual property tax. Both don't make much sense. Also lack of conservation and recycling. The nature that draws people to the state is slowly being taken away.

As my cousin once said, "Welcome to South Carolina where we get all of the four seasons - sometimes in the same day!" I'm from Anderson (originally from Pickens) where we don't have to worry about alligators or cotton mouths. For the most part we usually don't have to worry about hurricanes...although my mom did say that Hugo spawned a lot of tornadoes in the Charlotte area back in '89. Another pro about The Upstate is that we're not that far from ATL or CLT. In fact, it's only a 29 minutes flight to ATL, and as fast as 16 minutes to CLT from GSP.
@lapurta22

Heck when you figure in all the hassle at the airport, you can drive to CLT faster. GSP is a really nice rgional airport.

My Mom moved to Spartanburg, and I honestly thought about moving there as well. But researching the salaries (no minimum wage and being a Right-to-Work state the pay scale is ridiculously low), I found that I would literally make less than half of what I make working and living in a rural New York State: $48,000 vs $93,000. I don't care how low the property taxes are (I pay less than $1000 for property and school taxes each year here in NY), I just can't afford that kind of hit!
@MrChristopoop
@MrChristopoop 2 месяца назад
@donreid, we bought a home near Seneca, about 1:45 southwest of Spartanburg in august of 22. We are from CNY. I just retired from the NYSP up there and have spent the last month at our house down here in SC. We looked at a property in Spartanburg but it was about 80 grand more than we wanted to spend. The wages ARE lower for a lot of different jobs here, and my wife is sort of a “rain man” with numbers and crunched em for a bit. With the vehicle tax here, she claims that the cost of living is only marginally cheaper than in upstate NY, but with the wage differences, it is more expensive overall for us here. We still have NY house because it is paid off and has a lot of acreage, pool, barn, shop, sugar shack etc. house here is on one acre in city limits and neighbors all around. Our house in NY I could prob sell for about 400 grand. Down here the similar stats (4 bed, 2.5 bath, garage, 2200 sq feet, over 15 acres, and other stuff listed above) would run 700 to 900 grand. Crazy! That being said. I like the people here, like most of the citizenry in the area I patrolled, they are a polite and fun to talk to group as a whole. I do enjoy that there are more sunny days down south, and the politics are much better (IMO anyway). I would love to have the housing situation I have in NY down here in SC. Until we can get enough for our place up there where we can get a place here with some land, we will be bouncing between the two. Good luck with your deciaion

You bring up a good point. You might not want to move here if you don't already have a good paying job lined up. Not everyone headed to Charleston is going to end up at Boeing. Not everyone headed for Greenville ends up with BMW. Although those two areas tend to do better with salaries and opportunities than the rest of the state. Those near Myrtle Beach usually get stuck with squat in the hospitality industry. In Columbia you can be hard put unless you can grab a cushy government job. It's a bit better for those living across the state line from Charlotte.

Greenville is at 1000 ft elevation, which means there is about a 3 to 5 degree drop in temperature from the coast, humidity is far lower, and there are far fewer mosquitoes. I grew up in Charleston, went through all the hurricanes in the 50s to about 1975. Then I was in Greenville. I have no interest in going back to Charleston other than for short visits. I went to Clemson, and could see the mountains from my dorm rooms. I have lived in the upstate for 50+ years, no interest in going anywhere else, but I do go to North Myrtle Beach in the summer. Try to avoid bike weeks, except if you are a biker. As far as I think, there is America, and there is SC. The only problem is USC football fans.

I spent 30 years doing long term travel assignments (3 or more months up to 18 months) across almost all the states east of the Mississippi. So I pretty much have lived everywhere for at least a little while. Now that I am retired SC has been my home for over 16 years now. While I don't want to be anywhere else, there are plenty of things that people would need to know before making a bad decision to move here. Better they find out before they pull the trigger and mess up their lives.
