A funny thing my husband laughs at me about when I travel and bring designer shoes is that I pack one shoe in my carry on and the other in my check in bag. A lot of theft happens right at the airport from your check in bag. I figure who is going to steal only one designer shoe from suitcase 🤷‍♀️

I just commented I do the same. Lol. Who would steal just one shoe which is my logic. Plus if your luggage gets delayed or separated from your flight that is a lot of time for someone at the airport to go through your things.

Too risky! I've had my suitcase once lost at the airport of Rome. Always the most expensive staff goes to my carry on bag. I always have it with me! Me and my husband also do that crazy thing that he puts half of his staff in my case and I put half of my staff in his. That way if his or my suitcase gets lost we will both have something to wear for some days and always our most expensive staff in our carry on bags and always having them next to us or somewhere we can see them on the plain. We travel a lot and had to find a solution at everything while traveling. Also I always wear a small backpack for my personal things and wear it the other way around(having it in front of me, not at my back). I do that at the airports. That way I can have my hands free to move my carry on bag around and noone can touch my bag without seeing them.

Paso a Paso Nails what do you do when then start announcing they are running out of overhead bin space and start asking travelers to check carryon. I always ignore the request and try to board with my carryon even though they made the announcement. This is why I show up early at the gate. Lots of things in carrying aren’t covered by the airline in case of loss or theft. I bought travel insurance here in the UK but haven’t looked into what it covers.

As much is I think all your items are so beautiful I think it’s really important to realize that bringing any kind of attention to yourself by wearing very expensive jewelry or high-end accessories and handbags when traveling can be risky you place yourself in a situation to be targeted for robbery. In certain countries people will walk up to you on the street and point a gun at you and take luxury items such as Rolex’s, expensive handbags even iPhones etc Because they can easily sell them for cash. So you do have to be very careful to not bring too much attention to yourself by wearing a lot of high-end luxury items when walking on the streets to avoid personal injury or assault.

I always bring my designer bags with me on holiday but I always have huge suitcases with good locks on them and I lock them in there if they don't fit in the safe. As someone who lives in both France and Italy, I would really advise people to have bags that zip up. I know that bags with a flap are more accessible and often nicer, but you'd be surprised how easy it is for people to open the flap and take your things without you even realising. And, I can't express enough how much of a buzzkill it is so sit in an Italian police station to make a report about your stolen goods. Pick pocketing is such a problem in Paris and major tourist cities in Italy that the police don't bother looking into it. You'll be basically sitting in police station for hours just to get a copy of the police report so you can give it to your insurance company.

@mkii2290

Make no mistake.. a backpack can make u a target since it's carried on your back and you can't really keep effective watch on it. Also, those who are practiced at pickpocketing can find their way to take stuff too. It's only less of a target because it's not screaming a brand name I suppose.

Hello Sophie. For your sunscreen/sticky handles problem, I recomend buying a couple of cheap "silk" twillies (I got a couple of matching ones from Primark for 2£) and using them to protect (and decorate!) your handles. Sophie allow me to suggest to be very careful with leaving valuables in your luggage. Once time traveling for business to another country (out of respect I am not mentioning the country) my colleague forgot her luggage key. At the luxury hotel we were staying the front desk suggested us to get the maintenance guy to our room. Long story short, the guy came with a humongous key ring and all kind of key sizes colors and flavors with just a couple of tríes he open her luggage lock. And manage also to open the pod lock. We were stunned by the amount of keys he had and how easy it is to open any luggage. just an FYI

I don't take luxuries on vacation ever and only take the jewelry that I wear, never taking the pieces off. I think people on vacation know you have limited outfits with you, and as long as you are clean, pulled together and stylish, that's the impression, you leave. They don't remember if you wear different outfits per day, or not. For one week in summer, I might take 2 dresses, 1 pair of shorts, 1 pair of leggings, shawl or sweater, windbreaker, 4-5 tops (those I change), 4 pairs of socks (those I can hand wash in a hotel sink), 7 pairs of undies (a just in case item, though really I could hand wash those at the hotel too), toiletries and inexpensive assessories. I never want to overly worry about things getting ruined or stolen on vacation. The catagory I tend to have too many of is shoes. Regarding shoes, it's differcult to take less than 4 types even for only a few days out of town. In summer that would be sneakers (called trainers in the UK), ballet flats, heels, and flip flops for a public pool or beach. So how did I do, Sophie? (thesavvvyshopper.blogspot.com)

Excellent tips! I do the same thing with my jewelry and put them in a jewelry type box and goes in my handbag that I carry on the plane. Once I mistakenly put a tennis bracelet in my checked bag and it was stolen by an airport employee. We were able to get a small portion of what it was worth reimbursed and an apology from the airline. Never make that mistake again. I’d take either Dior bags and the Senreve. I’d leave the others home safe. Have a wonderful and safe holiday.

I really enjoyed this. When I travel I like to take four bags. A large tote with a secure closure, the Longchamp la pliage is my favourite for this. Then a dressier daytime crossbody, the LV pochette metis in black is my favourite as it isn’t as in your face designer as the canvas. Then the Oroton odeion box clutch ( the duchess of Cambridge has the blue one) in two different colours for going out to dinner. They are gorgeous but inexpensive and much deeper than most clutches so they hold a lot, at least double what you can fit in a wallet on chain. In your position I would take the Dior bag, the new one, it would do the same job as my pochette metis during the day. I wouldn’t take the Chanels, they are a bit too recogniseably high end designer and, as they can’t be worn crossbody, too easy to snatch.

Hey hunni, I would pack a light weight scarf/twilly/shawl, then you can drape it over the bag to hide the logo (if and when necessary you need to be more discreet ) and also you can place it over your shoulder/handle to stop the sun cream rubbing on the leather. Happy travels x

This was recommended to me and I thought it was a new video but am now noticing it was uploaded a year ago lol. Just wanted to say this for anyone who might see: I managed hotels for over 6 years before covid. The last 2 were historic boutique style properties, very upscale and sometimes very expensive with rates climbing to $500-$600 a night. I only had a handful of instances where something was stolen from a room, and they were usually electronics or jewelry. Most of those instances were because either the guest or housekeeper had thought they shut the door all the way, but it didn’t latch and popped back open. (With RFID locks we are able to read the locks to see who went in & out & what time and can even see if the door was left open). But something that I have always noticed... whenever I have had to enter a guest room to check a maintenance issue or whatever the case, I find that luxury items are always strewn about the room and I always found that to be quite strange. Please place all items of value in the safe in the room. If the room doesn’t have a safe good hiding spots for cash or small things: inside the tissue box, pull out several tissues place your things in and put the tissues back in. Ice bucket: most have a decorative outer container, pull out just the lining place items inside then put it back. Pillows have 2 covers, the regular pillowcase and a zipped one, place cash & small jewelry inside the zipped one, put the regular one back on and lay it on the bed with the items on the bottom. The front office also has safety deposit boxes that you can use. You will just sign a slip, place your items in the box & take the key with you. Take photos of the room before you leave. I always take photos from a glance and close up to make sure my suitcase or anything hasn’t been rummaged through. If you have an indoor security camera like the ones compatible with Alexa or google, take those & set them up to record in the room while you’re gone. I’ve known several guests to do this. Also make sure when you leave your room, confirm that the door is shut, latched and locked.

Oh dear. I don't want to be a wet blanket here but I am a fan of travelling with cheap costume jewellery and with no designer labels at all because of the risk of theft. Moreover, I don't believe that the hotel-room safes are secure. However, one of your beautiful Chanel bags could be good for day and evening in a hotel or a good restaurant and the other bags would be unnecessary. The back pack looks great and very practical for flying and for walking around.
@DaniLore
@DaniLore 5 лет назад
I have worked in 3-star and 4/5-star hotels and the nicer hotels take security very seriously and I wouldn't hesitate to use the safe. The staff do not have access to guest safes - only maintenance or a duty manager usually have access in case a guest forgets their code/forgets items on checking out. In the cheaper hotels, I would be more worried. Can be a hit and miss with how honest staff are and how secure the hotels are.
@Skyebright1
@Skyebright1 5 лет назад

Pickpockets are EVERYWHERE in every country. The difference is in your home, you are the local, you know your environment, where to go, you even walk with more confident because you know where you are going so pickpockets know well the difference of local and tourists and they tsrget the last. I feel sooo lucky to live in Shanghai with thousands of cameras everywhere so there are no pickpockets as they risk to get caught in 5minutex. Living in a safe place is soo valuable, but im from Barcelona, Spain. The most architectural impressive city in my opinion. The worst part of it was although my wallet was a luxury brand I was told by the police that this group of people who steal are not interested in your wallet, they just care about the cash. They will not try to resell your wallet. The police are constantly finding regular and high end wallets in the garbage cans they said. So as a head up, don't travel with a nice wallet if you don't have to.

My personal opinion. I'd be scared to take a designer bag to holiday. No matter what padlock you have it can be broken. Also imagine if you had the bag on and someone tried to steal it? Or you deals in shops, conned to a price of something your buying because you're wearing a designer bag? Again personal opinion there are some brands that are popular but aren't obvious. Like YSL some of there bags just say Saint Laurent or Givenchy. Mid range brands like Michael Kors, Coach, Ted baker Aspinal of London. I think those bags would be alright but personally I'd just be anxious on a holiday if I had a bag or even a wallet that was dior,channel. Again this is only my opinion if people do carry designers you do you. Sending you positive energy and prayers xx

Thanx for sharing, Sophie! I am always undecided which items to put in my suitcase, but I always end up with luxury of course. The only thing I never take with me are my designer bags. For this reason I bougt myself two bags by MK. One in black and one in nude. They look like Chanel bags, areńt expensive and I can wear them crossbody. I also always take a clutch with me for breakfast Time and evenings.

Thanks Sophie. Very informative video! I learnt the hard way some years ago when I was robbed at gunpoint just as I arrived my designation on a work trip. I was dispossessed of my laptop bag and luggage. Fortunately the robbers didn’t notice my handbag (which was under my shawl). The sad thing was that I couldn’t remember everything I had in my bag. Before taking any trip these days, I ask myself if I can live without an item, if I lose it before taking it along on a trip.

I love the Senreve bag....it's enough for everything....and safer than something that someone might just not respect as much as you do. I saw someone kick a Dior bag in Paris, right off a chair... at a nice restaurant a waiter of all people. The owner did not see it, but I was sure to tell her when she returned to her seat. Often it's better to lie low when traveling!

I never bring expensive accessories or items when I travel because I'm usually out and about a lot more and don't want to risk damaging the item/s. Like if you go somewhere hot, there might be a shower or thunderstorm. What are you gonna do about your Dior pure white sneakers, those fabric kitten heels or those light coloured/fabric handbags which can get dirtied or stained easily. Bag cleaning services cost A HELLUVA lot of money, especially if they have to redye the colour !! In addition, full leather bags can be quite heavy as well even before anything is put into it! Also, wearing branded things might get the attention of pickpockets or other petty criminals and they'd find some way to target you for some manner of crime. You're on holiday in their turf-- who's the one at a disadvantage? Do you want to waste your holiday, seeking help from the police? Or having to take all that extra care hiding things in your safe deposit box or suitcase? Those methods are also not foolproof, by the way. How do you know there isn't a criminal syndicate operating in the hotel you're staying in?

@@Skyebright1 yup. I don't even take any iPad type devices, camera or laptop if I can avoid it. Just to have fewer things to keep watch of too. So I'm effectively looking after my passport, wallet and phone . I usually bring a fairly roomy fabric sling bag, waterproof if possible. If I get it soiled, I can easily wash it on the road and it will dry quickly.

If I were rich and or internet known, I would not: -wear luxury items that have visible logos. -wear crossbody bags with thin straps that could be cut with scissors. -wear shoulder bags because they are easy to steal. -post Instagram photos while on my trip. Thieves could be monitoring your Instagram and figure out where you are staying or where you’d be likely to visit. Post Instagram photos after the trip is over. -wear anything that could not be easily replaced/repurchased. No one of a kind or hard to repurchase bags or family heirlooms.

I just realized how downright minimalist I am when I travel. I just got back from a seven day trip. I used only one piece of underseat luggage and a purse. I went to Europe last month. I only packed in one carry-on for two-and-a-half weeks. I never pack more than one purse. I don't take extra jewelry. I will take multiple pairs of shoes and some scarves. All of my clothes have to coordinate so I can mix and match.

I do the suitcase as well Sophie. I have the Rimowa trunk so I use it to secure all my little designer items. And before I leave the hotel room I take a photo of my clothes hanging as well as my make up items. sometimes expensive lipstick goes missing. So I always take a photo of my bathroom items everyday before leaving and check them when I come back. Depending which country Im going would dictate how many bags I would take.

Hotel Thieves look for small, high-value items. So if your valuables are locked in a suitcase when they get into your room, they're not likely to steal the entire suitcase you locked. Because they'll need to get past Reception with it. And there's no chance of that happening! Even if it's b/c Reception or Security think it's a Guest trying to leave without paying. (Moral - Lock your non-Hotel-Safe-sized valuables in a suitcase :) It costs you nothing...but could save you everything.

Ritsuka - I think it’s also about not having something obviously out there to tempt people. If you just have a Chanel bag sitting out of course it will be taken straight away. If it’s in a locked bag a thief who is under time pressure might not bother to try to cut the bag open. Just an extra deterrent.

I was in Naples Italy with 3 designer bags, and even a huge Gucci shopping bag and ysl shopping bag. I wore them out and about walking on the trains buses etc. And and no one looked twice. I had my Valentino out on the streets near Garibaldi station at 2am ...I think it's good to be safe and aware of your surroundings but a lot of times I feel sad that people feel scared to bring their designer bags and miss out on the fashion opportunity due to fear of theft you are at risk of theft anywhere you are. If you wear your designer bags at home what is the real difference truly ? You need to be aware just notice when people are very close to you, make sure they know you see them. They want easy, distracted targets. As for luggage I put my purses on a carry on that they wouldn't check in if it gets full. A tote bag with no wheels or anything and then have in under the seat. It's not worth the risk of them checking it and mishandling the bags

I don’t take any lux items with me at all when I travel. The only jewelry I wear is my plain wedding band. I won’t even wear branded T-shirt’s! As for bags. I use the anti-theft brand Travelon and favor the crossbody. I also have the matching RFD zipper wallet/clutch. The bag is not designer pretty but I’m secure knowing that thieves can’t cut the strap, bag or bottom and sticky fingers are held at bay due to the zipper locks. Also, if I’m going to a country where poverty will be seen, I don’t want to flash an item that is worth way more than someone’s annual salary. (Yes I said annual ie: Cuba).

So true...even though a person may stay at a pricey resort in some third world place still, the staff earn SO little that you feel uncomfortable with anything that even LOOKS pricey though it may not be at all.The female staff check you out every time you pass by and though you know they know the income level is so different. still it feels just sad. Even management in third world hotels make a pittance, only the owner is well off. Of course we want to look and feel nice on a vacation to those places (Latin America, southest Asia, some islands) so it does require some thought about how flashy to look.One doesn't want to look sad and worn out on vacation so it can be a quandary for sure.
@StarrTrekn
@StarrTrekn 5 лет назад
@@latinaalma1947 I completely agree. But you can still look nice without the lux labels/price tags. Staple, classic pieces which can dress up and dress down, mix and match. My go to items are white and black Converse Chuck Taylor II low tops, Tieks ballet flats, Frye dark brown mid calf Engineer 12R boots, nice faded jeans for casual and dark wash/black for a more dressier look, simple t-shirts with no designs in classic and nice single colors, various color plain and embroidered silk tops, light cardigans, faded denim jacket, various no brand scarves (light and medium weight)...you get the idea. The light weight scarves I use as my pops of color - wrist wraps, hair bands, belts and around the neck. I can still be fashionable with that accessory but on the down low. I've been to South Africa, Africa, Middle East, Peru, Brazil, Cuba and various Caribbean islands, Thankfully never had a problem. I also try not to go overboard looking like a tourist either.
