SharpshootingUK explain some ballistic issues that people commonly mistake as scope tracking issues Did this help you out & you'd like to return the favour? / sharpshootinguk
I have a Leupold scope and it was not adjusting properly out of the box. Phoned Leupold and they told me to turn the windage all the way to one outer limit and then count the clicks as you turn it back to the opposite limit, then turn it to the middle (half the counted clicks) and do the same for elevation. When I centred the recital adjustment within the scope, I was about 3 inches out at 100 yards and zeroed it. But the adjustment functioned perfectly and has done so ever since. It also holds zero. I really can't explain that, but I have heard that sometimes a new scope can be a bit sticky in terms of adjustment, not that the scope is bad. By the way, Leupold told me if that does not work, I could send it back and they would replace it, but it did work. Love the scope!
Yep personal opinion after testing them side by side for months in various lights, doing tracking tests, shooting them on various rifles to extreme range....personal opinion but correct
As usual Richard your analysis of peoples probs are spot on, i shoot a lot of F Class and concur fully with all you have said in the video. Nice of you to share your knowledge with people who are learning and may not yet understand some of the things happening to them. Good info as usual.
Am so glad you covered this...in such eloquence. I've tryed b4 n didn't make the point well at all. Atmospheric conditions seem to change zero some to a lot. Pressure humidity wind and altitude all such factor in. More so as distance increases right
Good points, especially about the spin direction of the bullet when shooting in a crosswind. I'd never really given that much thought, good bit of advice. Thanks for sharing your insights!
I've shot comps out to 600 yards and never noticed this! I guess it's because on a range I didn't need to shoot 180° detail, and being an exposed range the wind was fairly constant. Much more relevant to the tactical shooter or long range hunter I'm sure but good to know.
I like to zero a scope at an indoor range at 100 yards. If any issues or concerns can go back to indoor range as I have established a benchmark for zero already.
Top of the bullet spinning to the right, therefore, bottom spinning to the left, you'd think they'd cancel each other out but it doesn't work that way. Have you had any experience with IOR's warranty repair service? I have heard some dreadful stories and our local dealer gave up with them altogether (about 10 years ago), hopefully, like their scopes, they have improved!
There's also coriolis effects at ELR distances when changing bearing, right? There's also a "Charlie tarac" periscope you can check out that adds verticle range to any scope.
Yep for sure, it is plus & minus, just wanted to point out that it's not so big an effect as some people think and it tends to get lost in the wind speed and direction changes for most shooters. Appreciate you taking the time to inform those who may never have heard of the effect though.
Hi Richard! I have a question regarding my Recon scope. Is it normal that the elevation turret is not level to the lines on the "drum" under/inside it? I can understand and accept that with cheap scopes but this is supposed to be a quality scope. Kind regards Marcus Josefsson
I bet i know what that is. Try undoing the four larger screws in the turret. Not the three little ones that hold the label drum but the ones holding the main turret dial on. Take the turret off and replace the turret with a little downwards pressure. Resecure the four screws. I think one is loose and it's tilting the turret slightly. HTH
Yes, that also is spindrift. But so is the effect of the slight sideways motion of a bullet, especially at long range, as it processes through the air. Bullets spin at an incredibly high RPM, in some cases as much as 1/4 million RPM and I imagine the tiny grooves cut into it by the rifling tries to grip the air slightly. Think how a cricket ball can be made to jink around in the air when bowled by a good "spin bowler" or a soccer ball can curve around or dip over a defensive wall of players. Physics, its a funny old thing eh?
So on a different note. Argh can't find delta Stryker in Texas or USA yet. But y'all across the pond have access to the lil fellers. So if I send you a stack of £ reckon you would procure 1 n post it to me??? If only it were that easy eh.....
It's my understanding that the UK has a restriction on shipping scopes 9x+ out of country but I bought my Stryker from Krale-Schietsport in NL. Prices are good, unbelievably low shipping rates, and very attentive customer service. My scope arrived in 3 days from NL to FL, USA.
