‘Don’t turn your shoulders…too much’ YOU are ALL arms! I have been told this, for years. I have played off 12/13 for decades, I have been playing for 35 years. A year ago Listening to many golf professionals I thought I must learn to swing ‘Properly’, use my body, not my arms. I have tried & tried to groove a greater turn into my swing, get my right hip back, keep a flat left wrist at the top of the back swing, then my left hip back through impact, etc, etc, The result, over the last year, I have struggled with inconsistency, when I was renowned (with my shorter/all arms swing) for being annoyingly consistent! My driving now is horribly unreliable. Then I listened tonight to this instruction, and recognised my old, reliable, enjoyable swing; & I said to myself…’You know what I’m going to dump all the fancy moves, & turns, because I can’t do them; this guy knows what he’s talking about’. A half to 2/3 swing, properly executed, is far more repeatable, & enjoyable. I’m off now to sign up to his site.
@@lawrencekidman4033 too common a story I’m afraid!!! But very glad you found your path and now can learn the moves and feels that work best for you. Well done and look forward to seeing the progress ;)
Yes I do this BUT when I try to turn through the ball my lower body gets way out in front and it causes an over the top swing. Well you know what that causes... SLICE! When you do what you said in this video, how do you keep the lower body from getting way out in front and causing the over the top death move??
@@stevenszyper3916 practice some with your trail leg pulled back to. E level with back of lead foot. Practice swing that and hit balls gently. We have a video or two on that. Right foot back drill etc
This might be irrelevant to most and it probably doesn't apply to anyone, but I find it interesting so I'll post it. I am a one armed golfer (right arm, RH clubs) and I essentially did exactly that first arm-driven swing the first 10 years of my life. My driver went maybe 160, spraying in all directions. Eventually I quit golf as my hcp was stuck at 25 and it would not move no matter how much I tried. Now a few years ago I picked it up again and decided to "delete" everything I knew and rebuild my swing from the ground up, literally. Now my arm is basically passive, I wind up my body massively, shift my weight well back (not swaying back of course, more a pressure shift), then I leave my arm "up there" and during that pause my weight drops back into the center and I sort of squat down and push off with my legs to kick in the hip turn and rotate my shoulders through. I went from crappy 160 sprays to hitting many fairways with up to 275 drives. And my accuracy went even almost more through the roof, my handicap 25 went down to breaking 80 regularly. The feeling now is unbelievable. Maybe my point is just: there are so many different ways to accelerate the club, maybe different people need different swings? I went from a very simple swing with terrible results to a really rather fancy and complicated swing with outrageous results. Sure it took a long time to practice and get the sequencing right but now it feels effortless and harmonic, it's become second nature and I am so glad I did this. Never in my dreams did I imagine in my 20s I could ever play like this.
Sorry just saw this! It sounds pretty good to me. It might get jerky if you try to hit AT the ball too much. So mind that. But keep at it and I’m sure there are things you can learn here too
OUTSTANDING!!!! I'm 6'3, 210 and have been athletic my entire life. I even run half marathons!!! But now I'm 59 years old and have been absolutely exhausted after a round of golf because I'm doing precisely what you cite. BIG, BIG shoulder turn and I'm all over the place with my irons and driver. This video just makes so, so much sense and keeps the game so simple. Thank you for a sane approach to golf!!!
FINALLY!!! Finally someone gets it! I found this myself after 3 years of a newby batting at balls. Now waiting for a rotator cuff surgery to heal. Try what he is saying with one hand and you will have better appreciation for how turning the torso and moving that shoulder high, quickly will impart tremendous speed into the club head. Now they are flying. I can't wait to get that right hand involved when the shoulder is healed.
First time I’ve ever left a comment on RU-vid. And. I’m an avid watcher. I have been learning for two months and had 4 lessons and watched a lot of RU-vid!! Alex. You are an excellent teacher. What you said resonated with me so much. It turned my game around. Thank you so much x
Alex, You are a breath of fresh air...I have been doing the overturn golf swing for many years and have had very little success. The wind-up you teach is exactly what is needed to have a more compact golf swing with much better results. Thank you so much for keeping it simple. I will definitely keep watching your videos. You are definitely a 5-star Golf instructor.
Alex, spot on buddy! Everyone likes to overcomplicate, over-extend, and tell you that you have to get the golf club so far past your head. Too many swing thoughts. I'm a big guy, 6 feet, 230 and my swing is short like Rahm's. Powerful, nice and supple. My best and most purest strikes have been as a result of feeling the weight of the club and having supple arms and wrists. When you're tense and try to kill it and "turn," you lose so much distance. Thanks for this! I love following you bud!
Brilliant! I’ve been playing golf for more than 30 years. This is the magic for older weekend warriors. I’ve been coming back to this after taking hundreds of lessons from pros who want to make you swing like the pros!! Without practicing 3-4 times a week there’s no way that an ordinary person can do this! Thank you so much for teaching this the way you did!!
Strugeling 47 years of golf. I had to wait for you to understand how to swing consistently. Incredible. Thank you, many man thans. Shame on many other golf pros, who were not able to explain to me, what you did in 10 minutes Video including your pitching videos. Great. Great. Greatissimo. 🎉
Hi Christian! Although I’m sorry you’ve had too much frustration in your golf journey but trust me we are all golfers and have had many frustrating experiences and periods where we go down the wrong path. I’m glad to have nudged you in the right direction and happy you’re with us now. Keep at it 👍🏌️♂️⛳️💪
I’m 66 years old and what you described is pretty much my swing for the past several years. Works quite well for me as I have been shooting my best scores during that time frame. Thanks for reinforcing the swing method I utilize.
I have had many lessons, every instructor tells me turn shoulders allot, etc, then every time i do this they tell me my shaft is flat and my hands are too much in the inside and i need Toe up, etc, etc. When i practice on my own and try to get toe up and shaft not so flat! my feeling is I'm picking up /lifting my arms on the back swing, exactly what your saying in this video!! but because of all the lessons i have had and listening to all the instructors,,,,,,I thought by doing this i was Totally Wrong but now i understand it is ok and works for me and many others. I hit the ball much better when doing your feel, but subconsciously revert back to turning shoulders because instructor tells me turn more with body and shoulders and No Arms!! You are the first instructor that actually tells this, just like i feel and have explained. Will definitely subscribe and watch your videos. P.S. My driver has always been my best club and guess what even after having lessons, my feeling is take away with Arms and lifting my hands higher and i get it out there consistently and on fairway.
It’s all too common I’m afraid. It really is vital to know what you can do and too many instructors try and fit you into a “model”. Well done for getting there and glad to help refine and validate
This is working very well for me Alex. I also find it easier to think about my right hip going a little behind me and this helps me to better time the transfer of my weight to my left side in the downswing. I have been getting more lag and can even feel the bendy feel in the end of my club shaft. I think I finally get what they mean when they say "...cover the ball". Thanks a lot - John Woodley
Alex, I have been trying to teach myself the Mike Austin swing. Studied those Austin / Dunaway videos a dozen times. The shoulder tilt explained by you fixes a major hurdle to me. Thank you so much.
Fantastic lesson for club golfers. I learned to do this the hard way and am now one of the most consistent ball strikers at my club. Playing with loose wrists is an art in itself and key to distance. Simple golf makes the game much more enjoyable.
I agree with you on this, Alex. What you are describing here is essentially the Stack and Tilt system. I am a big fan of S and T. It has helped me tremendously with hitting the ball consistently with sufficient power and accuracy. I’m not sure why some people seem to get put off when the words “Stack and Tilt” are used when talking about learning how to play solid golf. I can only imagine that those people have not tried it themselves. But, as I said, I have and it has helped me a great deal.
It’s similar in some ways the first swing I describe.. but a lot less rotation and no tucking the pelvis under. More free flowing. S&T was taken from many elements of good golf swings. So there is always lots of crossover.
@@martynmantack4026 it's a good way of hitting irons. Stack and tilt most commonly revert to as stacking shelves on the tour e.g if you take it up you will be working in a warehouse....yet good for the amateurs...
Great vid sir ! I found this out the hard way over 40 years of golf ! TILT not TURN, I have one feel and that is on the takeaway my left shoulder tilts and my hands move parallel to my legs. This consistently gets my club in the right position at the top of the swing, then just go. The smoother your swing the better as that gels the whole swing together. I don't care about distance, it's always ACCURACY over DISTANCE for me. I don't miss many fairways now and this is key to consistency and scoring well.
This is an old video but i absolutely love this analogy. Ive really struggled to understand the difference between tilt, turn, rotation, use your body, how the hips work together with the body. The last part of this video what shows the winding up and the starting of a lawnmower. I cant wait to give this a go at the range. I like that you touched on stack and tilt too, im stuck between 2 styles. I was trying S+T because the whole staying still and moving round the lead leg made sense to me then i had some lessons what proved i was reverse pivoting but this then had me rotating and slightly swaying becUse i was too concious about where my weight needs to be and it lead to more inconsistency. I feel like this video could be a golden nugget for me, thank you.
I’ve been watching a lot of people give advice but you really make it simple, I’ve watched 3 other videos and after practicing and applying your suggestions my game has improved, thank you! I’ll keep watching!!!
Your the man brother! I've been playing for 25 years, and I've watched all your videos this year, and I've never hit my irons better than the last few times I played. I did not top, scull, or hit any balls thin, I didn't chunk not even one shot. I hit a 185 yard 6 iron in 50 degree weather by the way, and I'm 60 years old, in fact ALL my irons are going much farther lately. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
@@josephwirtz8352 Taylor made, it was slightly downhill, but nonetheless, all my iron shots were flying off the face. I hit an uphill 7 iron 159 into the wind on the same cold day, just another sweet green on reg that day. I attribute most of it to a left bowed wrist pointing towards the ground, shaft lean, & a downward strike while raising & opening the hips through impact. Those were the swing thoughts I had
Great information! I've always taught that you push the grip end back with your left arm and shoulder, which in turn creates all the shoulder turn you gonna get.
The hands going out, the shoulders turning has an added negative for me of the wrists locking producing a down swing of total disconnect. Your sample swing looks like mine on a good day. You have given me hope, no small thing, thank you
Love your videos. You make things simple and clear. The supple wrists are what I've found to be valuable, together with a straight left arm. Keep up the good work.
I’m 63 with lower back & right side abdominal issues. This advice is essential for me to keep playing golf and lessen post golf pain. Plus it will improve recreational golfers game 100%. Brilliant instructions. Do the hard part of working at it and enjoy the game more… 👍
I really appreciate it. I am one of the beginners in Korea who is suffering from turning shoulders that makes me a lot of poor swings. I will practice and practice via your videos. Thank you so much!
Damn, this is so timely and accurate! I came to the same conclusion today on the range. Reduced my shoulder turn to help make more consistent solid contact. Thank you for the validation and additional instruction!
Thanks for the simple idea. You deminstrated with 7 iron. It looks fantastic. What about long clubs like fairway wood or driver? What kind of imagination do we need to add for longer club, because longer one eventually requires swinging more horizontally around the body?
Alex, I've been watching your videos and many others for years now and this is such a great swing thought, "wind up". You can stand virtually still and just wind up. It does feel very powerful. Add a little weight shift, turn, and follow-through and it feels great. I've been trying to wind up by turning my shoulders and hips, but there is not that much actual wind up of the torso. Thank you.
I hear you! I’ve recently “fixed” my long suffering short game (chipping mainly) by eliminating a conscious effort/intention to turn my lead shoulder on the take away but rather initiate the movement with my hands (and allow the shoulders/upper body to “follow” as a consequence). My club head stays outside my hands as a result and I no longer deliver from the inside. It’s made all the difference.
You confirmed that there is more than one way to doing the golf club. I have had 3 hip replacement, 2 knee replacement and 4 ankle surgeries. This information is a life saver for the ability to continue play the sport that I love. James L Smith- Smitty.
Wow, what great instruction. This has to help anyone with limited flexibility or injuries. I am a Tom Saguto follower with his stack and tilt. I really like your instruction as a version of stack and tilt. Great work!!
Very kind thank you! Yes, I prefer a more fluid way of swinging rather than than making folks fit a model. Stack and tilt has plenty of merit though as all it did was focus and exaggerate some specific commonalties amongst many great swings and strike.
Any semblance of a golf swing I had a month ago is in the rear view mirror, Im just about ready to pack it in for the season and go fishing. This instruction could be my savior. Thanks.
Thank you so much for the great video. I used to hit like that and was making a lot of progress until I started taking lessons and everything started going south from there. I tried this on the range and almost every shot was great contact. Thanks again.
Hi Alex ,wish I had seen this many years ago after wearing my left hip out trying to turn (really forcing it) I guess now 25 years later the feel is to use the arms and have that lovely feeling that the club handle is just dropping down vertically which then allows the clubhead to drop down naturally (allowing natures gravity to swing the club not trying to force it.) Many thanks for putting this video out
Just found your channel, been using my version of this kinda just going back until I feel the initial torque, which is between 9 & 10 o'clock, then firing through to between 1 & 2 o'clock, I've been doing this for the last year & been hitting my driver better than the first 30+ years, I just subscribed, looking forward to more of your tips, thank you!🤙
I have been looking for this swing for 10 years . I am 67 and a pretty athletic guy for my age but after and accident I had to have my lower back fussed in two places . Turning in the golf swing now HUTRS ! this swing is for me . I watched the driver lesson also Thanks Dan
I like this. I've noticed when I keep the golf swing more on a "flat plane" - that's the term I used to describe the feeling - that everything just falls into place much more easily.
Excellent video that makes a lot of sense especially to a senior golfer like myself. All my iron shots now feel like I’m hitting a pitching wedge - going for accuracy rather than power!. I feel more in control of my golf swing. What was ruining my golf game was that turning was destroying geometry, balance timing etc. Thank you so much. What a shame that I didn’t know this 50 years ago. Ps one thing I would mention is don’t try to make up for lost yardage by lunging forward on the downswing
What a brilliant video! Had some lessons a few years back from a successful pro who drilled into me that you must move the left shoulder aggressively away from the ball. This guy had a relatively short backswing and just crushed the ball. I truly enjoy your videos, there are gold nuggets in every one! Thanks.
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf Never heard a pro or anybody preach to turn the left shoulder aggressively. Maybe aggressively getting from starting downswing to impact but if turning aggressively is taught you need to do what the old timers say to do and that is to run as far away from that guy as you can and do it now.
He's playing my course. Well, he's a member and he so freaking cool. I took video for him once. I was rolling greens and he asked me. I was honored. A sweet, great guy.
This is a great Alex . We'll put together. I am definitely going to give this my best shot. I have already started seeing some improvement since I started
61 year old senior golfer struggling off 8 handicap. This feels like a complete change of Swing and takes some getting use to of course. Now seems so easy - no turn and left shoulder back. Ball flies long and straight. No effort. Brilliant instruction videos. Thanks
Thank you, so much for this tip. It has been absolutely amazing to help me to start to get in the right place. Your teaching style is amazing. I love the content the way you explain what to do is so perfect for beginners.
I'm 56 years old. This is the feel I've been wanting for soooo many years. Going to go out today and practice this after work, trying to get to where I'm consistently in the low 80's and breaking 80, a frustrating but fun journey.
Going to play this evening and give it a try. I can't do any worse than what I'm doing now. My son tells me to stop trying to crush the ball just hit it. What your teaching makes perfect sense . Thanks a lot.
I swear this turn move was what they were teaching in the nineties. After watching your video, the lawn mower/bow-and-arrow move clicked with me. I feel more compact and literally like a spring tightly coiled and ready to explode. There isn’t a timing to it as you mentioned with the old turning method. All the energy gets delivered into the ball now. Thank you for the advice.
Fantastic lesson mate, this the best swing thought I ever heard, you really make the 'swing' concept that I know into somewhat more of a lateral movement, rather than the 'rounding' concept. Almost like a reciprocating/piston movement. Thanks a lot
I agree, I have much more power and accuracy when I don't try to rotate the shoulders. Too many golf professionals have been appraising swings as being too 'handsy' and not athletic enough, which is wrong for many. For me, the focus is on the three-inch takeaway being on plane and the windup followed by reasonable rotation through the ball. That's it, no other thoughts are needed apart from good fundamentals (grip, posture, balance).
I liked your explanation of turning verses winding up. And getting my left shoulder back around. I enjoy your videos. I always get something helpful from them. Thank you!
Alex, I never got good golf instruction. I used to always struggle initiating the backswing with the shoulders causing my arms to often get out of sync with my body and the club face too open or closed at the top. I learned it is better to spring hard with the core to generate the power to move the shoulders and arms to the top of the backswing. This technique allows me to use the hips to initiate a powerful downswing without shoulder tension and a tendency to come over the top. So thanks for your terrific simple golf instruction.
Alex! I have been using the lifting and dropping principal and I have seen some results. I feel that my ball hitting consistency has improved tremendously. I'm going to keep working on it. Keep up the good work!
Yep. Thanks for grounding me again. I’ve lost my iron swing. I do what you say for Pw-8 iron and strike well. At 7-iron and below I add turn to generate power and everything goes wrong. If I limit my back swing by limiting turn I generate better power. Going to test this tomorrow. Thx
I have been thinking about this for a long time, glad to hear from a pro instructor, if I may say the purpose of the shoulder turning is to follow the hands, do not even think about turning the shoulder just allow the hands to make the backswing, I would imagine like single backhand in tennis......
Hello. New subscriber here. When I play my best golf, I make sure I use a shorter backswing. My feel is I'm doing a half backswing. I'm actually doing more, but it feels that way. I think I'm in a combination of the two ways you speak about, in that I am a stacked player with more weight forward. Letting the right leg straighten in the backswing is very important to wind up properly. When I struggle, I get too flat with my shoulders in the backswing. I've been struggling to find the right feel to get the left shoulder going down. I've just been outside to feel the right shoulder going up, instead of the left shoulder down, and it helped. Will try it on the range and course tomorrow. Thank you.
I think that was just my problem, over swinging!! I was told, by my friend , that I don't turn my shoulders and since I tried to turn my shoulders I over turned, hitting very bad shots! Thank you for sharing this great tip! Stay safe! 🥰⛳️🏌️♀️
I have been practicing this move in my golf swing and straightaway my golf has improved because I keep doing the same thing every time can’t believe how this has changed my golf game amazing 👍
I wish you would have explained this for the driver as well. I know I could translate some of it, but to see it done and listen to you explain it with the driver would be incredibly helpful! Thank you for this though, I am going to start working on this today!
I ve been doing this move on the range for quite a long time and been flushing it pretty much every time so great tip not took it to the course yet hoping it's just a matter of patience 🤞👍
Yes but most importantly being specific in your pre shot goals and intent and then matching it with intermediate point etc. we have videos on it and an entire series for the simple process
It getting a little brisk out on the North Shore of Long Island, NY I’ll going in December to Scottsdale, AZ So. How can I practice this “SWING” indoors. By, the way we use to have a place at PGA National in south Florida, the Honda Classic Our place was about 600 yards from the BEAR TRAP STATUE🤙🏻🤙🏻
This lesson describes what I do most of the time with my irons, played a round yesterday and shot an 88 which to me is excellent in a par 76. My irons were dialed in but I only hit maybe 5 good drives, can you put a video together using the same concept as this video using the driver? BTW, I’m 60, I’m still pretty flexible so if you would address the older golfer it would be awesome! Please let us know when you make your way to Houston, would love to shake hands and thank you.
I hit the ball 330yards plus and am a 1 handicap.... played on courses since 12 years old. I swing all arms and backswing points club straight up, weaken right hand bcuz i fight a hook, and take club back with right hand to shake hands behind u, (opens club up), & BOOM BOYS. THIS GUY HAS THE BEST TIP IN GOLF... trust me. Ull get distance too and consistency when u have a short backswing... it feels great af!! keeps timing right, and body still..also keep head laser still if ur fading it too much...keep ur head still, short backswing will make golfers a lot better.
