I do not expect you to take my word for this - all I say is... try both ways and see which one is:
Faster
Able to double or treble up easiest and quickest
More Powerful
More balanced
Keeps you safer
Keeps you in position to defend or attack the best
The answer will be obvious - you are welcome.

Twisting the front foot, all the power is out the window as well.

Twisting the foot derives from Krav Maga Systems, some Karate Systems, Pankration/MMA and perhaps Hapkido. We are generally rotating on the Spinal Axis. It does generate Power (especially if you're 285lbs/130kgs like me! Lol) but doubling and tripling up on the hook is impossible. You also might Overreach and get knocked out by a skilled Boxer or Streetfighter. It is only a good method for "Trading Powershots", rotating the foot, hip and spine together. The only recovery for a missed Hook rotating the foot and hip along the Spinal Axis is to throw a Backfist, or a Cross or a Hook with the other hand. But in a prolonged fight or Streetfight, a skilled boxer will beat you almost every time. Sadly, many Martial Arts Schools only train their students how to fight and win against "Normal People", not skilled fighters, "Seasoned" Sport Fighters and other Martial Artists. I'm glad I watched this blog because I learned something new and vitally important about throwing a Hook in a real Fight.

Glad you liked the info - ref power generated.. I never think the rotation method generates more power for me - and even if it did... I would trade that for multiple shots and all the other advantages of not twisting - especially for a real fight with no ref etc!

Interesting. I was taught palm facing yourself not palm down but twist the foot. I teach twist the foot myself. I do personally believe that it is a stronger punch but that could be because I'm more practiced one way versus another. Even if it is stronger, possibly, the speed you lose for follow ups and recovery to defend is substantial. Hmm.

Palm facing yourself is correct.... there are times when a foot twist is best.

What if it is neither, or both. I have heard don't twist the foot, but then twist the foot a lot. I think it is best to just put a small twist in the front foot, but definitely not 90 degrees of twist. So twist allows for more power, but too much twisting adds nothing and creates instability. So, enough twisting to allow good enough penatration with the hook, but not so much twisting where a boxer cannot quickly throw a right hand after the hook.

I have another video from last week August 2024 explaining that very thing.

Either your memory has lapsed or mine has - as I can't think of a time I have ever taught to twist the foot like that - to anyone.

@@RussellStutely Do you remember wave forms? It was linked with this. Sorry you dont remember, but if you're going to mock instructors, that are doing their best, you do set yourself up for a response.

@@matthewparkes-inspiredkara5283 Not only do I remember waveforms - but myself, Peter Holmes and Eddie were instrumental in bringing them to the fore in Martial Arts. I mock lack of common sense and blindly accepting without confirming.... if an Instructor chooses to take that personally - that is usually because they are guilty of the very thing being mocked.

Jack Dempsey's book or old fight footage of Rocky Marciano will tell you: lateral torso motion (as opposed to hip torque); always precedes the hook 🧞‍♀
@RussellStutely
@RussellStutely 2 месяца назад
In many cases that is 100% correct. Like every "rule" there are times when it can / should / has to be broken for a better effect in a particular moment.
@Devi_Shammuramat
@Devi_Shammuramat Месяц назад
@@RussellStutely Well I think your angle is too wide - the hook is supposed to be a straight yet angled punch (if that makes sense). But you've got the torso movement right in one of your recent videos, for long-range hook. With short-range the torso should be less of a diagonal, more lateral. And [in both cases]; it's horizontal fist, striking with the small knuckle 🧞‍♀
