Don't Use Vectors to Final | IFR Approach | Garmin 430 / Garmin 530 Training

Do you use the Garmin 430 or Garmin 530 GPS? A lot of times ATC will give you vectors to intercept the final approach course on an IFR approach. This is a high stress time, not only do you have to readback a long clearance but you have to start your turn and get ready to fly the approach, so a short cut a lot of pilots do is to activate vectors to final. After all, ATC is giving you a vector to the final approach course right?
But hang on, by hitting vectors to final you’ve told the GPS to erase some of the fixes on the approach. In vectors to final, only the final approach fix, the missed approach point, and the missed procedure are kept loaded.
We’re going to see why that can be a bad idea and a procedure you can follow instead every time you fly an approach that will save you from having to push too many buttons and will limit your head down time.

I am at precisely this learning point in my training. How do you not have more followers? Your content is no-nonsense to the point and precisely filling a gap a lot of other guys are filling with some sort of vanity. Well done and keep at it!

Thank you so much for explaining so well these different procedures. Thank you for going slow and showing what buttons to push and what knobs to turn. It is so very helpful! The larger the pictures the better as my vision has been declining after age 50… Thanks!

This is gold! I'm doing instrument flying with my instructor and I am right at the point of my training where I can use this information. My '78 172N has a 430 in it and this video is exactly what I need.

I have a Baron with a 530, 430 installation and your video is really really good and to the point. You always have the stack of arrival point ahead of you when vectored if they cut you in further out or in. I really like always doing it the same way every time. I have encountered exactly the problems you have addressed.

Thanks! Yes the newer Garmins don’t have the same vectors to final issue but the 430/530 is still so widely used it seems helpful to point out. Where do you base your baron?

@pk7549 2 года назад
Absolutely correct, it is always a good idea to load an approach with the closest transition fix, for this exact reason. And BTW atc does not discriminate, I had atc surprise me with a clearance for an approach that required a procedure turn. At the airlines, we almost always get vectored on to final, however sometimes it does happen and at 200-250 knots, having to re-load an approach in the fms can mean a go-around.

Good information. But what I had to do in order to lock it in was to replay the video several times from the 4:00 mark to the 4:12 mark. That'll seal in the four steps which one has to do. Very cool video.

You and King get this procedure correct. I argue with my CFII's over this. Yes, that's a plural. Going through them like water. No consistency. Great point about vectors deleting some of the waypoints.

Agree this is good advice. My IFR instructor always drilled this in to me. I still remember near the end of my training we were doing some approaches at multiple airports. For some reason heading to the last airport he said “just put vectors” within 30 seconds the controller amended our vectors due to someone on an IFR final and the IAF was no longer available. We both got a laugh out of getting bagged the first time I tried it.

Okay... I'm an idiot and I'll admit it but... Maybe I'm not! I have been doing instrument training and the most difficult issue I have had is programming the box (in my case, a GNX-375). I get confused about when I choose what, based on trying to anticipate what ATC says. This has never really been explained well (in my opinion - or maybe it has but not at the right time). In 1 minute of this video I have learned more than the last 4-5 approaches I have done. It wasn't really about learning your recommendation about the "hickup" about using vectors to final, but really a LOT MORE!. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!

I hear ya. The GPS (like all technology really) has a learning curve which we'd rather not climb while also flying the plane. I don't have any experience with the 375 otherwise maybe I'd do a vid, but have you looked at Garmin's GTN trainer apps? You can simulate the 650/750 (similar to 375) on your iPad. Very helpful apps.apple.com/us/app/garmin-gtn-trainer/id479670018

@@flightinsight9111 I got this app and I helps a lot by allowing you to fiddle with the knobs to see what everything does and what the results with be when pushed. Question, is there ever a time when you would choose vectors to final or do you always load the full approach and then just fly ATC vectors allowing the next segment to activate when you get to it? Awesome channel btw.

An era coming to a close. Garmin is longer providing the parts for the 530/430 GPS. Time to upgrade to the GTN650/750. Touch screen and really cool to use. For those well off, time to upgrade to the G1000.

I understand all of this when doing IFR but what does it mean when it is a visual approach. There's still an option for vectors to final or in MSFS ATC will tell you to fly left or right downwind to your runway. In the procedures you can pick what runway for a visual approach

Just a small comment here: Highlight RIKME, then hit DIRECT DIRECT (the direct button twice). That activates the leg, and you don't have to select "activate leg" from the menu. Here's a handy guide: Activate direct to a point in the FPL: Highlight the waypoint, hit DIRECT, then enter. That means fly direct to waypoint. Activate leg: Highlight the waypoint, then hit DIRECT DIRECT, then enter. That means activate the leg. Its in the manual. I have had to study this hard, I am trying to gain back my currency after 10 years!
@flightinsight9111
@flightinsight9111 3 года назад
Thanks! I'll have to try that out next time. That does seem a bit quicker than "Menu - Enter"
@FlyingLessons

Worse than the “what if you get sent direct RIKPE” is that you are still responsible for the stepdown altitude at RIKPE, and now you have no way of knowing where you are relative to it. I teach students to explicitly activate leg, as others have suggested. Incidentally I also never use “activate” - only “load.” I always want to load and then explicitly choose the fix or leg I want, because almost never is direct to the IAF what I want at the moment when I’m loading the approach.

does this happen on every unit or only the 430 and 530? Will the 650 or 750 still show the points after hitting vectors to final?
@davidclark39

Yes this is only a 430/530 problem.

Will it automatically continue the sequencing after you pass the activated leg fix? Or will you have to continue to load and activate each leg individually?
@piloto34HD
@piloto34HD 2 года назад
Once that leg that you’ve selected was activated through the “MENU” button, the GPS will automatically activate the next segments/legs of the approach ONCE you’ve passed the leg that you’ve activated.
