Very sad for such a great country and history. Tarnish the image of egypt. I wanted to visit when i retire so better be on guided tour rather than free travellers.

It takes away the human spirit of helping people genuinely. Everything is about reward and money. Humankind has gone to that level.

@Samantha Schoettgen, I would suggest that you still go. Just find a local friend / tour guide that you trust and you will have a pleasant experience. Few of my western friends were in Cairo last year and whenever I had time to show them around it was a pleasant experience to them. I had to deal with all those people trying to scam :D so it was not so much fun for me but they had good time. Good luck at the pyramids though this is the scam centre :D I dont think have dozens of local friends will even help

I visited egypt 8 times and for me every time its so good most of the people i met in all those times were realy nice last summer was the most recent time i visited egypt i went to alexandria cairo and dahab and i had a egyptian guide with me so that helps a lot someone who speaks arabic and knows how much to pay . And this summer i will be back again

I was there in 2021 , same chaos, no hotel, lost, no internet , etc. But, like a champ, didnt get hustled at all. Met up with Omnia and she even paid for lunch at Nile and took me to the Cairo tower, she helped , me get socks, and a VODA phone! Everyone helped me , when i was lost, they would even call my hotel with the number from a business card i had in my pocket. Its these weak travelers , Egypt aint for the weak, and south america is 10x worse !! Time of my life ! Ill def go back , this time i wanna see Luxor !!

Egypts streets are very very safe so if beggars, assertive salesmen are enough to break you or you are too gullible and trust random stranger scammers then I feel bad for you if you ever go through poverty outside the US/EU. I have been to Dahab and yes it was an amazing place to visit. There was much less hassling there, one of my favourite places in Egypt.

I went to Egypt for a week and it was the most horrific experience of my life. I told a man no for a tip and his son (who was about 6 or 7 if I had to guess) immediately went to the police and told them that I tried to rape him. I am lucky that I did not go to jail.
