I've got a few ZX Spectrum books that start off with "wiring the plug". It's another age! Lovely machine sir!

My father in law has one of these in it's original box that he bought for his daughter (now my wife). It was used just once on Christmas day in 1985. It's been in the box ever since.

MSX's just never got any traction over here (US). I'm very anxious to get my hands on one or two, but they're hard to get here. Have fun with it!

I remember being taught how to wire plugs in school - a skill they no longer teach due to the plethora of molded (moulded?) plugged these days

There are a lot of Flash Cartridges for MSX to choose from. They are either very expensive, not available at the moment or have some disadvantages... I'm pretty happy with the SD512 from 8bits4ever. There's a similar thing from another seller. They are mostly okay and under € 100. The newest and quite interesting is the MSX Pico. But that can only be bought by mailing the guy who makes it. That's around € 80.

There are several options for loading stuff from SD Card via Cartridge. The cheapest option is probably the "SD 512" which can go under several different names depending upon where you import it from. If you already have a BackBit Pro cartridge, there is an adapter for the MSX - but if you don't have the BackBit Pro then the Carnivore2 cartridge is the much better option overall, but certainly the most expensive. A lot of the add-ons and modern solutions for the MSX tend to be on the expensive side overall but it's certainly worth it imo. Note: if loading via the cassette port, some games make use of the relay to stop/start the tape during loading, so it can make it a bit of a pain if loading from a device that doesn't support this, ie. a phone. A CASDuino-type device would be preferable there.

I had an HX-10 for a while in the eighties. It was a solid machine but not easy to get software for. There were some great Konami cartridges though, like Track n Field and Konami's Soccer that I played to death. Oh and the keyboard is really nice to type with,

That MSX has even less memory available (of the 64k) than the C64!

Did you figure out what the double beep was on the c128? I see that there’s 3 boot modes for a c128 and I wondered if it was going into mode 3 (CPM) - but it needed a disk drive with a disk in it. So I assumed it wasn’t the 3rd boot mode happening…
