If you want to kill some time before the Nintendo Direct broadcast that's happening around June, this is a good idea to watch. I did get a bit burnt out near the end of producing this as i was predicting the video to be just under 4 hours. Instead, it's up for nearly 5 hours. One of the reasons is that I kept finding new differences by complete accident. If you enjoyed watching this video please support my work on Patreon, Ko-fi, Superchat, etc. Heck spreading the video to other sites is a good idea.
As a reminder, unlike the Super Mario Advance games or the GBA version of A Link to the Past, where the SNES source code was used as a basis, the GBA version of Donkey Kong Country 2 was made from scratch by the Rare Handheld Team with no access to the source code, which explains why it is so inaccurate to the SNES version.
@@X2011racer They were using a SNES emulator to get the sprites as well but in GBA DKC1, Klump (army helmet foe) and K.Rool had smoother arm animations.
Yes, the most interesting thing is the history of the name: Quawks was a thing in JP localised material of DKC2 and DKC3 but Quawks (as a name) first English appearance was DK Barrel Blast. Source: www.mariowiki.com/Quawks I would've used that name for the video but it was never used in-game during the animal buddies section of the ending.
Even if I could get past the way worse graphics and sound, I think most of the changes were for the worse. Very interesting to see all the changes though. Good job.
@@CMSonYT So the SNES version was just over 8.5 years old before the GBA version came out. So now, the GBA version is about to turn 20 years old very soon.
I glad you like it and had the time to watch them. I may not be a full time creator producing bangers after bangers weekly but in return I deliver videos like this that age very well for a long, long time.
Another well-made project by you! I'm not at all familiar with the GBA version so this was in general a nice insight. Thank you! Looking forward to DKC3 :)
Even if I say yes, please understand they take a very long time to produce, the main culprit is the level design. Rocket Rush on GBA for example has completely redone the placement for both enemies and items.
Kind of interesting a few of Cranky's lines in the intro are from the instruction booklet of the original DKC2. I remember in the booklet he has a bunch of wise ass remarks about how bad the story is and that the are scraping the bottom of the barrel as well as other general insults about the animal buddies DK, etc.
It's weird how Donkey Kong Country basically was re-released twice on Nintendo's handheld systems. Sure, Land 1 was radically different so they had to make DKC for the Gameboy Color but Land 2 and 3 were close to their Country counterparts. The people behind the GBA ports did a good job imo. I wish the DS had the trilogy as a whole in a collection...
