I always thought Whitney and Donna had the most projective voices in secular singing, these are the kind of voices that could sing opera if they really wanted to, what a gift and skill.
Donna was soooo underrated! I saw that goddess live and she could sing the roof off so effortless! No technical shenanigans, no autotune, pure style, class and talent!!! Miss her sooo much!
Donna started her career as the front woman for the Psychedelic Rock Band Crow, before excepting the part of Shelia in the Munich Production of Hair. She won accolades in the European productions of Porky and Bess, Godspell and the Me Nobody Knows. This particular song was written for the musical Ordinary Girl, which was about her life. Which is why you are hearing the broadway production of the song. Donna was well before Whitney, being Pop Music's first female mega star (before Madonna). She was the most commercially successful female artist of the 70s in the US and Worldwide. She was the trailblazer that push the boundaries crossing into multiple genres. She was the first female and the first black artist to take 3 albums to the top of the Billboard Pop charts back to back. Nominated for Grammys in 5 different genres at least 3 times each, and winning Grammys in 4 different genres. Named the "Diva De Tutti Dive" by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - the first true diva of the modern pop era.
When you accidentally paused the video... 😡... Lol! After listening to Donna Summer for the 1st time as a child of the 70s, it's like MUSIC, I get it! It's not just something to listen to, but experience. Love you Ms. Summer, then, now and forever. ☔️🌈 🌞
Just beautiful... That voice mesmerizing effortless... Yes Donna is underrated... Anyone listening, she can hold her own ... I just love her... "AMAZING"
After my good morning prayer I listen to this song faithfully 😍 Donna Summer is one of the Top 5 Women singers ever Born! I can only imagine the concerts in HEAVEN! That song makes her the BEST FEMALE SINGER EVER BORN!!! I was born a "Music Lover"!!!AMEN!
This is from the Broadway Musical that Donna wrote about her own life called "Ordinary Girl" This song is based on the time in the late 60's when Donna had become a housewife in Germany and was feeling trapped in her marriage and and became depressed because she had such a need to write, create and perform. It is supposed to be a duet where her husband sings one verse, then she sings the reply. She also shared 2 other songs from the Musical during this concert (in1999) called "Nobody", and "This Is My Life". It's a shame this never made it to Broadway and we were given the cheesey jukebox musical.
I highly recommend this whole concert on DVD, which was available, but seems the CD version is most available but cuts out some of the songs from the full concert. - In any case its from - Donna Summer - VH1 Presents: Live & More Encore! (1999)....I had the DVD, but lost it somewhere, or gave it away, its EPIC, and Donna here sounds better than ever in her 'mature prime'. RIP - she was much more than just a 'disco queen' covering many genres plus musical theater, and this song I believe is her own that was going to be part of a musical, if I recall but not sure. - She is a virtuoso!
This may be my favorite live performance by Donna Summer! You hit it in the head with the Broadway mention. When she introduced the song in this concert, she said it was for a planned stage show which I believe was based partially on her life. Just beautiful! I hadn't seen this in ages, so thank you for bringing it back!
All your detailed remarks on this performance are so on point. As a die hard fan myself of this Unique artist since 1975, im so in tune with your reaction. Thanks a lot man! Donnas legacy deserves young audiences to mantein her prescence on todays and future pop culture universe. Keep the good work ok !
I’m very impressed with you sir in how astute you are in picking up on the Broadway part of the song because Donna Summer wrote the music and lyrics for a Broadway show she was going to produce about her life at one point and that song was about a woman at a crossroads trying to decide whether to pursue music or kind of go back to raising a family and I am very proud of you for picking up on the Broadway angle. so congrats to you on that and long live Donna
I met her outside of a Broadway show. She was in the audience as well and afterward, I was waiting for my ride and, amusingly, she was waiting for her ride (hers was a lot fancier than mine) but I pretty much gushed over her and she was so nice and we talked for like 5 minutes. I'm sure it was just normal to her. To me it was like, the coolest thing ever. I've loved her music since I was a kid. RIP Donna Summer. And thank you!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. One of my favorite Donna songs, goose bumps and tears from this beautiful song. No question Donna and Whitney are the two best singers hands down. Unfortunately Donna is the most underrated singer ever. Never got the credit she deserved.
Disagree with the reactor here, I've been to see both Donna and Whitney many times; and Whitney never made singing look this easy. Whitney titled her head back , her eyes squinted, her neck veins bulged (when she went for her high notes), she also sweat profusely , even from a the beginning. This is what set Donna apart, she stood there and opened her mouth and that incredible voice came out looking and sounding so effortlessly . .. a true pro.
Thanks for your extraordinary analysis and reactions. I will like to see your reactions for the Donna Summer's studio version songs: "Wishpering Waves" (1975), "Take Me" (1977) and "Grand Illusions" (1980). I'm very sure, that you will enjoy it a lot.
