Donna Summer knocked this one out of the park (no pun intended). It was a cover of the Jimmy Webb-penned 1968 song by actor Richard Harris who took his much slower version to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The 60s band The Association actually turned this song down because they felt the orchestration was too complicated. Summer made it her own and it became her first of four No.1's in a 13-month period between October 1978-November 1979. She was on FIRE! For a real treat, check out "MacArthur Park Suite" which runs 17 minutes and 34 seconds. I guarantee, it'll blow you away. Even when I was in the clubs in the 90's, 15 years after this release, this never failed to jam the dance floor. She was one of the greatest female vocalists of all time. RIP, Donna.

This is the equivalent of watching Donna Summer singing the dictionary: The lyrics don’t matter-and the lyrics to this song are just nuts! But damn she just belts them out and it’s simply phenomenal. Love her so much. She brought it on every tune! A light that shined so bright for way too short of a time. She is sorely missed. 🙏🏻

I read someewhere that the lyrics are referring to a bad relationship that is being washed away, that she put so much into it and can never reproduce it "I'll never have that recipe again".

Listening to this is so bittersweet. As a kid in the 70s I do remember her voice being everywhere during the last half of the decade. Think of the biggest female entertainer today and that was Donna in the 70s. You needed all three of the Bee-Gees to compete with her. And hers was the celebrity death that hit me the hardest. More than MJ, Prince, Bowie, George, or Whitney. I think the reason for that is that you could see Donna had a beautiful soul. RIP Donna. You are deeply missed. 🌹

The big hit for this song was the Richard Harris version. Yes, the same Richard Harris that played Dumbledore in the first 2 movies. Explanation for the lyrics. This is a song about lost love. His love fell apart "like a cake in the rain" and he doesn't think he will ever have another one like it. Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again

Great Reaction friends!!

This song was originally a massive hit for actor Richard Harris in 1968. (Yes, the guy who played the Professor Dumbledore in the first 2 Harry Potter films)

Donna's voice got richer and even more fantastic as she aged!! She has tons of Live Performance Videos on RU-vid. You guys should try a song that she does from one of those later concerts. I think you'll be even more amazed with her!!

“Someone left the cake out in the rain”. This song had some crazy lyrics but it didn’t matter. The strobe lights were going off. The disco ball was spinning. And I was in the middle of the dance floor having the time of my life. Thank you Donna for some great memories.

The cake was a metaphor for the writer’s relationship; ‘it took so long to bake it’ being how long they’d been together.

Donna was The Big Thing back then, with many hits, including this one, which is a Disco cover of a song by the original Dumbledore, Richard Harris. It was a big hit for him, even though people were scratching their heads over the lyrics, and still are. I was totally amazed to hear this version, when it was released, because who would have thought it possible to turn that song into a Disco hit? Donna, that's who. ❤✌

You guys should really check out The Cowsills, they were a family group like The Osmonds, and in fact, The Partridge Family show (with David Cassidy) was based on them. My suggestion is 1967's "The Rain, The Park and Other Things". It's got the true hippie flower girl vibe to it.

I consider Donna Summer part of the holy trinity of disco performers along with the Bee Gees and K.C. & the Sunshine Band. Two one hit wonders from the disco era you may want to react to are Yvonne Elliman (If I Can't Have You) and Peter Brown (Dance With Me).

Yvonne Elliman was an established stage performer having played Mary Magdalene in “Jesus Christ Superstar” and has the hit “I don’t know how to love him” also.
