If you read the text written in the book, it says that he will experience visual and auditory hallucinations, along with telekinetic powers as the few weeks in the tangent universe collapse. It is very quick in the movie but Roberta Sparrow did write it in the book.

Yeah that was stupid. He didn't have psychokinetic powers. The portal came for HIM, and there just happened to be an airplane there, so he made sure to be in the right place and at the right time in order to make the jet engine go back in his place and set the course of events properly in the new recreated universe which matches the old one in an earlier state. That's how he ACTUALLY did it. He could predict things, not move things with telekinesis.

It very much was an apocalyptic situation, and Donnie Darko was very much like Jesus who may have been given a choice in one way or another but in the end he did what he did to save other people from the end of the world. So if your perception is severed, through death, the world is therefore over. Time takes place all at once, so if Donnie died then he is removed from all timelines, there are no more world for him. But I mean then again I'd argue the Bible is more than just a "piece of literature". It's more powerful anyway and has had more lasting effects on the world than fucking Harry Potter has for example (which I would argue also has biblical themes, ironically enough). And no I am not a religious person, let alone a Christian, I do think that the power of the concept behind "Jesus like" characters IS strong, though. And in Donnie's case to me I don't think it could be any more clear, he was a flawed individual himself who was basically given a choice between saving himself and himself alone at the cost of the fate of the rest of the entire world, or he could do what he did to save everyone else, the good, the evil, the people he knew and the people he didn't. I mean, that's what a good bible-thumping Christian would tell you their man JC did for the rest of us on planet Earth, one way or another he did die though on the cross, whether you believe it was for everyone else's sake or not is of course up to you.

The weirdest thing happened when I watched this movie. I had just finished learning about "Cellar Door" that very same day and knew nothing about its significance in the movie. I end up watching the movie to go to sleep and see the reference to it in the movie and it freaks me tf out. Such a weird coincidence.

It came out around the time of Blair Witch Project, so creating conspiracies' around the movie was a selling point for many movies. I promise you that he didnt wrote such complex story in 28 days. He might of put together something that he was working on for 10 years, since it was his first project. This is my read of the movie as well. I see all the characters and plots as Donnie’s consciousness coming to terms with his own death and trying to find meaning in his life and it’s end at a young age.

Nope, you're looking too deep into it. Younger you was right, this movie is shit and you now "think it's a masterpiece" because everyone around you says so. I give it a 6/10 and will not change that to conform to society. It's an alright movie but theres much, much better out there.

In my humble opinion, Drew Barrymore is a genius. Sure, she has done some material that might seem a bit frivolous but when you look at the projects that she has been an integral part of producing, directing and writing, as well as acting, it's really quite an astounding body of work.

I also believed that he had chosen death not only because he realized the tangent universe was just an illusion, but he had physically already experienced his own life in another universe

First Question: at that moment, when he is in bed after laughing and rolling over (I'm assuming to go back to sleep), does he *remember* all the past events that he was just previously involved with in the tangent universe? I think at this point, we would both say yes. Observation: if he *does* in fact remember everything right before he about to die in his bed, again, at this point, you would say that it doesn't matter. Donnie chooses to kill himself because he knows things wont be exactly how they were in the tangent universe. Correct? But to that I ask, yes, things wont be exactly the same but, can they not be pretty close? As in, if he still remembers bumping into Gretchen in the tangent universe, why can he not simply meet up with her again in the real universe? I mean, she shows up for class - hes bound to meet her again anyway. Further, he still remembers that one dude being a ringleader of a child porn chain, no? Can he not still, on that very night he was going to in the tangent universe, burn that dude's place down again to expose him? But i want to humor you. I want to go deeper with you in all this. Because you bring something interesting to my mind that challenges my argument towards you. Are the things we humans go through in life truly make us what we are today? I mean, I know that sounds like a 'duh' question, but sometimes I don't believe we *really* believe that. Like when someone says if they could go back in time and change one thing. But in going back and changing even that one thing, would that not make you an entirely different person? I mean, think of all the situations (there are possibly millions, maybe billions) where it took one seemingly small variable for such a situation to occur. For example, you've made bad grades and have to bring home your report card to your parents. They've said that if you bring home a D, which you did, you cant use the car for going out this weekend. But you just met this girl, and you think she really likes you and you've already kind of "pre-scheduled" a date with her over the weekend. You ask your parents and they, at first, say lean to saying no. But then, at just that moment, at just that small frame of time you ask again; this time, with a slight, oh ever so slightly softer tone and pitch and rhythm in your voice - just enough to win them over; they end up saying yes you can use the car. That nano-second of time mixed with the complexities of human communication resulted in *that* moment. To go back in time slightly before you asked, would it even be possible to pull off such a tone and pitch when you ask? And if not, wouldn't we say the rest of what happens there would forever be different? That you, you would be different? So, in that sense, I can see why you would think Donnie would choose death over the unavoidable difference he would be as a person if he would have snuck out and avoided the crash. I guess, my only *REAL* question would be: why then was he laughing right before he died? What was so funny about the thought that you lost the only real chance you had for companionship (Gretchen)?

C_Norman93 there's also the possibility that right after Donnie travelled back in time, he forgot everything that happened, just like all the others. This would make sense, considering that he was laughing and rolling around in his bed. This implies that he might just be thinking that it was some dream he had while sleeping, and doesn't remember that the events occurred at all. And that's why he goes back to sleep. Maybe I'm wrong idk

i think what really happened was that Donnie met this grandma in the parallel universe and notin primary universe so she could be one of the manipulated dead to help Donnie out...

I had similar / eerie feelings at the end of the movie Melancholia. A release of purposeful energy into the unknown…yet also a subtle beauty in wistful resignation.

Perhaps she believed (or at least wanted to) that there's more to life than this: "Choose life... Or choose something else" (Trainspotting) She could have an intimate relation with the darker side of Darko. Don't you think. Even the possibility that Donnie was abused by the guru can't be ruled out... Either it was only the result of Donnie's hallucinations or there were some really fu.ked up people (including the principal) in that school. I'm not from the States so maybe I'm missing some allusions: Even the young pair of teacher who seemed to help him were smiling when mentioning his name. Was it because they approved his alleged deeds or were they smiling at an "idiot"...? Not clear, to say the least. So I believe that scene was ambivalent on purpose

what I thought the end was was entirely different for this I got it all wrong I thought it turns out in end he dies by jet engine and he trys to save universe and to do so he has to follow the bunny's orders but it turns out the 28 days were the days until he died and it was showing the life he wish he had if he had 28 days left in his life and the old lady in the film was also dead and somehow she was trying to warn Donny that's why she only communicated with him once she had the letter that's what I got from it

@@alliswell.7003 At the time it was clear to me that I was watching people follow something like a path of energy that pulled people to follow their pre determined destiny. This existence in this reality is controlled by things far beyond our understanding and I felt like I had a glimpse into something that's always there but we just can't sense with our limited senses. It's really hard to explain honestly. Our senses can only pick up on such limited amounts of information. So much is happening around us all the time that we're just oblivious to. I don't know for sure what I was experiencing and I can't say it was even real. All I know is that in that moment I completely believed that I was given a glimpse of something more. That either our choices were creating trails of energy. If someone walked in a straight line, I could see energy spoting spiraling in a straight line in front of them. The strangest thing was the energy that was "pulling" them would change directions before they did. It made me question how in control we really are. The only thing I know for an absolute fact is that there is far more to this reality than we understand and to think we have it all figured out is what's really insane..... I tried my best to elaborate. It probably sounds like nonsense but shit like this is really hard to explain. Cheers

Dude that’s what I was thinking after I saw the movie. Still love the game but it’s really just “Donnie Darko” with more sunrises. That being said, while if you interpret it the same they can be similar, I see Donnie Darko as saving the world or something along those lines while Life is Strange is about saving one person. This is with the idea you think LiS is about cherishing what you love and is about giving Chloe the life she never had. Then again the same could be applied to Donnie but I think he’s more of a savior so the point doesn’t connect for me.

I mean I know Chloe has to die to set the university straight, I just always thought of it as her life sucks so this was as she said, some kind of going away present or consolation prize. Like the universe felt bad it had to kill her so it gave her a second chance to be with her best friend/love, fix unfinished business, and let her grow up. Kinda similar to how this movie can be interpreted actually which is I guess why you can draw comparison. I agree Max grew as a person and that was the point too, the Chloe part just jumps out at me personally and it what I took from the game most. I kinda like the idea this was kinda about Chloe and Max is just the means by which she can do it. In the end it’s a form of art though with many things that can be taken out of it. I don’t mean you’re wrong I’m just saying what I see.

Just watched it on Netflix myself. I had no clue what was going on and thought it was just bad story writing. Then came here and realized that the Director's cut existed and explained it more.

krisbudz14 I believe it’s a private school that goes from kindergarten to twelfth grade . And i thought that at first but you can see the way she is shaking and smoking her cigarette, people show grief in different ways.

She’s grieving all right! She looks like a woman who isn’t a smoker but has one to calm herself.

The tension between the mom and donnie that is set up throughout the film makes me feel like she is feeling relief and guilt at the same time.

I think she’s broken down from his death and when she sees Gretchen she gets a split second glimpse of what Donnie really did

the movie Pink Floyds "the wall" gave me nightmares the 1st and only time I watched it.

Meexi I found Enemy quite easy to understand but Donnie Darko still feels like a mystery even I have various ideas on how to explain its meaning. Maybe need to think about it a little longer.

The sad truth is that comments like this or the book you read are dangerous misinformation that feed into the schizophrenic's dillusions of having a unique mission or actions carrying special meaning. Schizophrenia is the result of pathological structural and physiological malfunction in the brain. They have periodic releases of large amounts of dopamine in the brain that makes them feel as if something of great significance just happened. They then search for something to ascribe this importance to. This pathology also makes people 'sensitive' to impulses as they are unable to process information normally. Everything you describe is a result of the pathology, not the cause.

I know a schizophrenic who once told me that a six inch tall Jesus appeared in his living room dribbling a basketball. That's not a sensitivity or an altered experience. It's an illness.

@@Hacks4FPS The way you described schizophrenia is also how I interpret this movie. I don't like this whole parallel universe nonsense. I think this movie is about a teenager who struggles with schizophrenia and believes in these weird theories. But in the end his crazy ideas actually seem to be real, so the viewer can understand how Donnie feels. Because he also can't tell what is real and what isn't.

I think a lot of the film is actually not literal at all. Its all representations of emotions. There is a strong link to depression, and confusion, more so even than even schizophrenia.

Theresa....you seem legit cool as a human being. I genuinely hope some time in the near future _you_ make a movie...and blow all of our fucking minds. Only you know if you've got that in you...but if you do, you must follow it through. :)

An unexamined life I’m a deep thinker I guess. Those kinds of girls exist but they’re more likely to be at home with a book than with friends at the club. We sure do have our own flaws though so it’s a trade off I guess lol.

Yeah I find this 'why aren't there more girls like you' stuff annoying. There is this stereotype that women only really love fluff and shallow romance, when the truth is that most of us (people / humans/ those who inhabit the earth with a homo sapien brain) love both depth and the shallow stuff, but for some reason women get extra judged for it. Meanwhile men get to like stupid actions movies and video games, etc, but because they tout stuff with more complexity as being 'for men' they think they have so much depth over the majority of women. (except the rare few lady pixies, of course). ......It's just stupid.

And please don't think I am just being mean . I am not trying to hate on you guys, I am just pointing out how this happens. I am not trying to call you sexist either, so please don't dismiss what I am saying as an overreaction. (I just have to make this disclaimer because of the environment we are in politically all over the place, but especially on youtube).

yeah, except for the comparison to Jesus... who was not a pacifist. On the bible, Jesus is quite a rebel to that community talking to those with authority... had no fear of differing in opinions and beliefs... even traditions and rules. Donnie is quite similar, and I'm sure many of us have met people like these two... great analysis though. Totally loved the entire video.
