I can remember being 6 or 7 years old and my dad singing this song as we went down the road, he always tried to sing the deep part...lol, good memories. Give this a thumbs up if this song reminds you of past smiles and good times. I miss you daddy.....
Best country group ever. Hard to believe their career lasted almost 40 years. Most groups dont last 5 years. I first heard them back in the early 1970's when I was very young. I'm still listening to that great music.
I remember when the lights came on at Wrigley...the first thing I thought was, "Well, the Statlers will have to re-write that song!" A few weeks later, they played the version with "When they put a dome on Wrigley Field..." and I laughed, because that was the way I'd figured they'd write it. :)
Phil’s middle part is also the hardest to harmonize. The lead, tenor, and bass parts typically have easier patterns to follow. Jimmy Fortune is one of the top tenors ever, but I have to say the distinctive sound they had with Lew DeWitt just doesn’t have that same inimitable blend now. Thanks for the post, the live performances are always my favorites.
If I could gives two tumbs up, I would!!! God I love my boys. Miss them so much. And that great music. I used to get to see them every year around my birthday but no more. I miss that present. Love you Harold..where ever the h e double hockey sticks you are.
HELLO?!! AT 82 JUST SCANNED COMMENTS...PICKY!< PICKY!> PICKY!! ABOUT LYRICS CHANGES, HOO SANG WHAT PART, & CHEAP SHOTS AT JIMMY FORTUNE!!! TIMES CHANGED, LEW PASSED....MOVE ON BIG FELLAS!! STILL GREAT MUSIC & SOOO GLAD THEY LANDED JIMMY AT TENOR>>> I STILL LOYAL FAN.
The Statlers wrote soooo many great songs it's hard to choose a favorite. Gotta say this one is at the top of my list! Love you....Harold, Don, Phil, Jimmy and ((Lew....RIP)!!!! P.S. Phil does do a GREAT job singing Lew's part!!!! (RIP)
To those that would say Jimmy is not that good your very wrong! He filled in so great for that High Tenor spot wrote them number one hits and in my opinion was the best over Lew but because it was my era probably! Although hard to replace an original for sure he had a great voice and the Statlers are classics of all time regardless! We can all agree on that!
@@kevinmiller1985 When Jimmy first joined the group, Phil and jimmy agreed that Phil would sing Lew's part on songs that Lew had recorded with the Statler Brothers.
I noticed in this version Phil sang When the doc says C' mon In, etc. When Lew was still with the group, it was H E who sang it. Why did they switch? Same with the song Noah Found Grace In The E- yes Of The Lord, Phil would sing lines that Lew sang wh en he was with the group c ompared to when Jimmy to ok over.
I have a CD of the Statlers' Live Wheeling, W. Va. Concert in which they sing this song..Harold went through the story of why they changed the lyric..He said "It didnt matter to us one way or the other..Just almost ruined a good song"
@DogEars93 On their live album they said something along the lines of, "They just had to put lights at Wrigley Field and screw up a perfectly good song." LOL
These fine men are the most underrated group ever. They sang about life and love. They sang about family, loyalty and other human feelings. I never felt that they were revered as they should have been. Far and away the best in country music. Pure gold! !!
Phil did do a great job! You would have thought Jimmy would have carried that part given he's their tenor but Phil's tenor made me fondly remember Lew.
@@jameshepburn4631 So, basically, there NEVER will be a situation that can happen for him (the singer) to come back to his girlfriend/wife, due to the fact the singer just keeps changing his rules ... even when one of the situations he sings about literally comes true.
This is a very good song however this is not the original version. The original had the line. When lights go up at Wrigley Field. They changed the song after they put lights up in the late 80's
i have a tape with them and harold tells the store about the change. there were getting letters in the office saying poeple wish they did sooner so wish they didnt put in the light it didnt matter to then so they changed the words.
So... the idea is that when certain things happen then he (the singer) will come back to his girlfriend/wife? Okay, in the original song he says "when the lights come on at Wrigley Field I'll be coming home to you". It is now fact that in 1988 the lights did indeed "come on at Wrigley Field" (the song was released in 1981). Therefore, he lied. How do I know he has lied and did not return to his girlfriend? Because now he has changed the condition to "when they put a dome on Wrigley Field, I'll be coming home to you". And therefore, no matter what, he will apparently just conviently change things whenever the original things in his song happen. I know it is just a song, but still...
Quickdrwaw1111: When the song came out in 1981, there were no lights at Wrigley Field. When lights were installed at Wrigley Field, the song was rewritten to say "When they put a dome at Wrigley Field," I'll be coming home to you.
@ Allen Booth: Yes, I know that the song was rewritten to adjust for the change from lights to a dome at Wrigley Field. However, you are missing the point of my previous post. I was talking about the STORY of the song and the fact that the character in the song lied about returning to his girlfriend/wife if a certain condition happened. And it turned out that the certain condition DID INDEED end up happening. When that conditioned happened (the lights coming on at Wrigley Field) then the character in the song was proven to be a LIAR, because he now has changed the condition from "when the lights come on at Wrigley Field" to that of "When they put a DOME on Wrigley Field". Therefore, why did he ever make any specific conditions to return to his girlfriend/wife if he wasn't going to keep his promise to return to her when a condition was met? Yes, I am smart enough to know it was just a song, but I am just making a point that the character in the song lied when he claimed that if a condition was met then he would return to his girlfriend (or wife or whatever she was to him). He lied and didn't keep his word.
Actually it's oak ridge boys for Elvira! Alabama had other songs - also Elvira was one of many hits for the oak Ridge boys and they were around a long time before Elvira.
