The Statler Brothers the best quartet ever these guys could harmonize and could sing like none other when Lew left they were blessed with Jimmy Fortune he was with them for 20 years rest in peace Lew and Harold thank you STATLER BROTHERS your music will live forever they were a class act God bless.
I wonder if he or anyone close to him realized how rare his voice was. Natural base voices with the quality he had are highly prized in classical circles, and as I already said, are very rare💔💔💔
Lew DeWitt is just about my favorite singer from the early days of my music memory. He was a rare talent and I appreciated his sound from the beginning. Thanks for the Statlers.
@2:18 What you're hearing here kiddos, is Lew Dewitt knocking it out of the park with one of the clearest high tenor vocals in the history of country music. To all the so called tenor singers of today that are watching this video. Lew just gave you a free lesson in tenor 101. THIS...….IS HOW IT"S DONE!!!!!!! RIP Lew Dewitt & now Harold Reid. I never knew either of you, but I've loved & admired you as brothers for many yrs. God Bless Don, Phil, & Jimmy. We pray that the Lord comforts you guys, all the family & close friends throughout this time of grief. Be comforted in knowing we will see them again singing with the angels.
We lived in Jackson, Miss. In the 70s, my mom took me to see them on my 12th birthday, Donna Fargo opened for them, an Awesome show indeed! That was 1976! Seen them again in 1978 & Barbara Mandrell opened that show. Love the Statler Brothers!👍✌
Lew Dewitt's voice is so pure and clean. I'm not convinced that the verse he beings singing at 2;18 of this video isn't one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.
Wow charlie!! I just discovered this video. I have heard many versions of this song by the statlers, but this is close to perfection. And its live!!! And you are so dead on about Lew. Hes operatic in this clip. Unreal voice!! Totally made the statlers in my opinion
My father loved The Statler Brothers. I remember well listening to them as a child. I tend to tear up when I hear them now. For some reason, this one always gets me, especially when Lew soars over that last refrain.
@@pse919 yes, may he RIP 😔. I came across with this song as a 4th grader playing GTA San andreas like about 12 to 11 years ago :) haha.. thanks to Rockstar games, I came across to this beautiful song
First time I saw the Statler Brothers they were opening for Johnny Cash. I have been a fan there’s for many years. In fact have been to 17 of there performances. Harold has always mad me laugh. He was truly a great singer and always added a lot to the show. Harold had a way about him that people really enjoyed. He will be missed. Norm P
RIP Harold. My deepest sympathies to your family and of course band mates. I am sure you and Lew will sing up a Storm. I grew up with your music and I still go to it when I want to remember my childhood or needing that feeling of home. Tonight I am trying to introduce my granddaughter to your great harmonies in hopes she too will find a love for your music. Thank you for all the great songs and fantastic memories.
I have a theory of what might be a possible reason. These guys from the past LOVED music and were willing to practice HOURS every day to get their sound perfect. They had to get the sound perfect because everyone was recorded on one track so if one of them messed up that meant EVERYONE had to start all over. That put huge pressure on them to get it right and that meant those hours of practice were necessary. My father was part of a gospel music quartet when he was in college. He told me that they would NEVER sing a new song in a church or on the radio until they had first practiced it at least 100 times. That's no typo. That's ONE HUNDRED times. When they got up to sing a song they wanted to know all the words without ever having to look at the lyrics. They wanted to know if there were places in the song where the guy singing lead could switch to tenor and the guy singing baritone could switch to lead to make it sound better. They wanted to make sure they had the tune exactly correct. They wanted to make sure the key they were singing it in was exactly right and not just slightly too high or slightly too low. In other words, they wanted to know the song inside and out and they could only know the song that well if they spent HOURS practicing it. And of course, they were willing to put that sort of work into preparing to sing the song because they loved the music and they loved what they were doing. It seems that many of today's singers do NOT love the music and do not even attempt to be a great singer and many of them would not even consider practicing a song for days in order to get it exactly right. They just want to be a celebrity and make lots of money...and it shows in the inferior product they put out. Even with their multiple tracks and the ease with which someone can redo just his part of a song if he is the only one who messed up, they still put out an inferior product. Hence the frenzy to invent the good old autotune that can be used when a singer looks good on camera but just cannot sing. "Get up here and look purdy, darlin'. We'll take care of all those times you were out of tune with this handy little gadget we just invented." What a gyp! That is why "live" concerts today are so often lip-synched. It's to hide the fact that the singer can't actually sing. I guess that's the end of my rant.
@@maryannanderson7517 ...that was not just a rant...it was spot on for so many "personalities " today who are masquerading as singers. If that is popularity, it is entertainment- not singing.
@@maryannanderson7517you are absolutely right. The Statlers had a reputation of being so well practiced that when they went into the studio they used much less time than many other singers. They were always well prepared and ready to go.
Some of us came here because of good o'le past music from childhood Some of us came here because of a great game But one thing is for sure, this music is one of the best . . . . . . . and screw those 15 ballas dope pusher
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! the first lead has an INCREDIBLE! voice and the second lead can hit some serious high key and it's no surprise they won best country vocal group several years in a row from 1971 to around 1978 with crazy voices like that, just a side note the guitar licks in between are pretty awesome too and did anyone notice the second lead guy's vocals were turned too high? being a sound technician it stands out to me
Turned too high?!?!? I’m not sure but I think you are criticizing their mix, typical sound man! The singers set the mix, the sound man’s job is technical. He is to make happen what the artist demands. No the “second lead” is not set too high, that is the Statler’s sound
The Statlers were extremely popular throughout the '70's and early '80's. Lew Dewitt left in '83 due to ill health and his talent could never be replaced.
Since I heard this song and new york city on Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, I've been a big fan of this band. And today one of the member Harold Reid(on our left side) passed away. Rest in peace.
TheNorthWolf i agree..., thats the genius of the Rockstar people.. they have great taste of music to introduce these music to younger generations, and because of GTA, I knew the statler brothers and their amazing music
I just want 2 mention these 4 great talented men never received the adulation that some of the rock musicians did, even though they won many awards, different audiences I realize but compare the lifestyles and you will see who were real winners in life
No one, or group of men could ever replace the best group EVER! I play their recording. Very often. There was no one else like the STATLERS. They were the Best Ever. Class of 1957!
Every time I went to see them, they would finish the show, go backstage and change and come back out to sign autograph and take pictures for all who wanted them They would not leave the stage til everyone was out. AMAZING AND A TRUE CLASS ACT
Yes, people who like the Statlers should check out Wilson Fairchild, Harold & Don's sons, Wil and Langdon. They've written many wonderful songs of their own, but their CD "Songs Our Dads Wrote" is amazing. Jimmy Fortune even sings with them on one cut.
RIP Harold. There is no doubt your longtime buddies were waiting in heaven for you like Johnny Cash, June Carter, and Luther Perkins just to name a few. 🌅🇦🇺💔
Listen to that Harmony!! Classic Statler Brothers Signature. Happy birthday USA would be this weekend at good old Gypsy Hill Park, Staunton, VA!! This would be their 45th anniversary of the celebration.
I loved the Statler Brothers so much. Fortunately when they toured they came to my city quite often. I saw their show every time. For some reason this song popped into my head today, and I had to come see them sing it. I had forgotten at the end Lew’s tenor goes high and is just so perfect. After Lew got sick and left the group it was never the same. Their harmony and sound were very very special. I’m grateful I kept all my vinyl albums; and turntables are making a comeback. I get to enjoy them all over again.
They had so many great songs. I'm 56 years old now and loved their music since I was a kid in the 1970's. I'm glad I got to see them live 3 times in the 1980's. Lew DeWitt had retired. Each perfomance was awesome!
She was called a scarlet woman by the people Who would go to church but left me in the streets With no parents of my own, I never had a home But an eighteen year old boy has got to eat She found me outside one Sunday morning Begging money from a man I didn't know She took me in and wiped away my childhood A woman of the streets this lady Rose This bed of roses that I lay on Where I was taught to be a man This bed of roses where I'm livin' Is the only kind of life I'll understand She was a handsome woman just thirty-five Who was spoken to in town by very few She managed a late evening business Like most of the town wished they could do And I learned all the things that a man should know From a woman not approved of, I suppose She died knowing that i really loved her From life's bramble bush I picked a rose This bed of roses that I lay on Where I was taught to be a man This bed of roses where I'm livin' Is the only kind of life I'll understand This bed of roses that I lay on Where I was taught to be a man This bed of roses where I'm livin' Is the only kind of life I'll understand
Thank you very much, Offhat, for taking time to write all the words to that song!!! I’m going to try and find out who wrote this song also!? I think maybe I heard that song a very long time ago by them!!! Thank you again!!! Really a great song… Sad but great!!
@@gaymichaelis7581Harold Reid, the bass singer, wrote it. His brother, Don, is the lead. Can you imagine that much talent in one family? And now their sons and their grandsons are both singing together. Check out Wilson Fairchild and Jack and Davis Reid. Wilson Fairchild did a great CD a few years ago called "Songs Our Dads Wrote." Jack and Davis are just getting started.
