Straydogger great song, Summer Breeze. Ever heard The Isley Brothers version? Very soulful. Ironically it’s on the same album, That Lady, as their LTTM cover.
@@MeesterSteefy McDonald joined their band in 1975. Tom Johnston had just departed due to medical issues and they wanted someone to contribute to the harmonies and add keyboards into the mix. The Doobs had been playing live for sometime before McDonald joined
This song is a masterpiece, you can pick out every instrument and appreciate it beyond measure. This band was so full of true talent, I really think no one compares. My absolute favorite Doobie song!
Look into a trumpet technique called "circular breathing" It will keep you from ruining reeds from over breath and of course give you all the wind you'll want.
Boomers! He’s finding our music....flashbacks for us, funny faces on him. Let’s see if we can get this millennial over 500k subscribers...he deserves it .
Are you sure he's a Millennial? I thought he was Gen-X. Younger side of Gen-X, but I'm sure I thought that at some point. Or I'm drunk. Well, I have had a few drinks. But I might still be right. People tell me that sometimes I'm right. I think.
@@Revelwoodie I watched another of Jamel' s videos and he commented on a song that he was born in 1980. He's also married. 1965 - 1980 are Gen X-ers. So he's a younger Gen' X-er. I think their generation still had some pretty good music in the 80's & 90's, at least much better than what is out there today.
That ass-kicking bass you heard was Tiran Porter. He's also the low harmonies on "Black Water" from what I believe was the next album. Tom Johnston is one of my heroes, and this album helped teach me how to play the electric guitar, and your enthusiasm for this song does my heart good.
The best thing about the Doobies is that they pulled this off live and didn't miss a beat. Gotta love a song with a drummer and a percussionist plus a harmonica.
This is the real Doobie Brothers, I get that people like Michael McDonald but I was never a fan of the MM era Doobies. These are the Doobies I fell in love with.
Funkadelic, Carl Douglas, KC and the Sunshine Band, Ohio Players, Kool and the Gang, Earth Wind and Fire, War and HIIYYY! I feel good James Brown as well!
I think it's okay that modern artists utilize computers, and to some extent, Auto Tune. I don't think musicians should make whole songs around the tool-- unless it's almost a joke song akin to Eiffel 65's "Blue", a song that should just be taken for fun. Modern mainstream artists lack... talent. And that's the problem, but having synths, and voice-correcting should be 100% fine so long as it actually improves a song and helps someone turn their vision to a reality. I dunno, just my thoughts
This one is personal, Jamel. My Dad raised me on the Doobies and Michael McDonald. This song was my Dad's favorite song ever - not just of the Doobies, but of all time - and when he passed away, we played it at his funeral as his send-off. I play it every time I go out to visit him. Thank you for covering this amazing piece of music.
"" BLOOD SWEAT and TEARS '''' "Spinning Wheel" and "When I Die" PLEASE YOU WILL LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JAM ALL AM ALL JAM ALL JAMEL JAMAL !!!!!!!!!
This song is incredible!! My favorite Doobies song and it brings me joy to see that it’s loved by the next generation! Michael wasn’t in the band yet then. I’m so grateful that I was a teen in the 70’s!♥️
Heck yeah! 70s southern funk all over this piece. If this doesn’t get some part of you moving, you’re already dead! This song still slaps till this day!
I know some of the members are from SJ because I'm from SJ. I'm saying this song has the music structure that uses a bluesy progression, a tight simple rhythm, and a funky baseline that is inclusive of Southern funk or rock bands in the 70's frequently use.
When the music is just a'ight, you are still respectful. When the music is this good, you feel it, and we feel you feeling it. Best reaction channel out there, bar none.
Yep...my favorite song from my favorite band. fyi...there is a Playing for Change video that Tom Johnston leads for "Listen the the Music". It is worth the listen. Pat Simmons and John McFee are also in the video
So MM came later when the original singer, Tom Johnston, started having troubles with his voice as well as a horrible case of pancreatitis. This was from a grueling touring schedule. Of course, this all happened at the height of their popularity. So they reluctantly replaced him with MM and continued on. Tom Johnston is now back fronting the band and they are touring still! i saw them in Palm Springs a few years ago. Amazing!
OMG every time I think of the Doobies the first thing I think of is Rog calling to set up an interview with them for the school newspaper and he says "Which Doobie you be?" LOVED that two parter!
If you have the Roku channel, that episode (actually it's a double episode) is on there. Watched it not long ago. They could never make an episode like that now. It's a mini concert. Too good.
Some GREAT pre-Michael McDonald Doobies!! Knew this one would bring out the STANK!!! That harmony sounding like a locomotive whistle itself. DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG!!!! Another one in that category; Another Park, Another Sunday. Great chords, harmony, sadness and beauty.
"Long Train Runnin'", "China Grove" and "Listen to the Music" are their three greatest works, and all came before Michael, believe it or not. As great as they sounded, the 'Michael McDonald Band' Doobies era is not my favorite period. I prefer the band with Tom and Pat leading and singing, in the mid 1970s and post 1987 when they re-united. Just my preference.
I played in a cover band around the CA bay area (where they're from of course) and Long Train/China Grove always KILLED. Band was tight of course or we wouldn't have dared but damn, what fun songs, especially when a crowd is diggin' it.
Totally agree. Michael McDonald with the Doobies had some great hits and really showed the Doobies music versatility and vocal harmonies which messed incredible well with MM's different/creative musical style. There is a Doobie Brothers concert video on RU-vid from 1982 in California. It was great and Michael McDonald was there with all of their biggest hits together, But the biggest roaring ovations still came for the Classic Doobie original hits. ALL Doobies, original and newer are all incredibly gifted musicians and singers. Big shout of appreciation to the Covid 19 home-based performance of BLACK WATER, it made my day.
You should react to “Radar Love” by Golden Earring. Make sure it’s the 6 and a half minute version. Or “Twilight Zone” which is also by Golden Earring. Both songs are really good.
That's back when the great bands had great tracks for a full album. We used to have a thing where you listened to the whole album if it was worthy. Some bands could pull it off, but not all. The great ones did.
Well in this one he's even naming the different train hauling companies... This has always been one of my favorite songs to cover during my music career. Love the Dobbie Brothers. "Listen to the music" is another great song of theirs.
My earliest musical memory is when I was three listening to this song while my Dad made scrambled eggs and him laughing when I asked him why they were singing “keep on pushing momma right into the lake”. I miss him.
Great recommendations. I really like the "Streets" album. "Wheels," and "For Someone Special" are standouts. And your right Wheels is great blend of both Doobie Sounds.
My favourite group, these boys are the best - guitar, bass, percussion, harmonies - total package. 'What were once vices' is another masterpiece album. Love your reaction, Jamal. live long and prosper.
The Doobs KILL it. No Mike McD here. Love that dude's sound. They are great with and without him. On that note, check out "Without You". It's on their greatest hits Volume One so you know it's not some fluff tune. It just totally rocks. ENJOY, Jamel!
Tom Johnston wrote Long Train Running, China Grove, and Listen to the Music, my 3 favorite Doobie songs. He just knows how to write a great guitar songs. It's amazing how he can make simple chord progressions sound so fabulous!
I have this album on vinyl....soooo good. The Doobies knew great talent when they heard it too...they ALWAYS have had a black bassist in the group; why do you think their riffs had so much funk and rhythm??? My Father took me to see the Doobies in 1974; he was an awesome dad! Jamal, can you do "Natural Thing" from this same album...best song on it in IMO!
Thank you so much Jamel! You take me back to better times in life with these reactions. I lost my mom in January, my father in law in Feb. and of course everything else going on in this crazy world today. I can watch you and forget all the bad I have seen so far this year. Thank you again for the escape.
The Doobie Bros is one of those groups that basically have 2 fan bases, you have those that like the albums before MM got there then you have the base that only likes the albums MM was on, nobody is wrong just a matter of taste but there’s no denying that their sound changed once MM got there.
There's a third fan base -- those of us who liked both eras, and don't see why the other two have to keep tearing each other down all the time. :-) The McDonald era was different, to be sure, but it's hardly accurate to say he "ruined" the band, especially when you look at the history of the group and the things they were going through at the time.
I remember cranking this at full volume while traveling on a chartered bus full of teenagers across the whole expanse of the entire nation when we got accepted to go perform at Disneyland when I was 15 years old. Man we had such a good time!
"And the steel rails lie cold and hard for the miles that they go down". Yes, I think it is saying that, without love, life is just a mechanical process that grinds on.
The Doobie Brothers before MM, Tom Johnston on vocals! “LISTEN TO THE MUSIC” one of their bigger hits! Where have I heard “listen to the music?” Can’t remember, hmm!
When I saw them in 1977 in Omaha, the one player who stood out was Jeff Baxter, one of their guitarists. He had this huge mustache. He had just come over from Steeley Dan. Jeff sat on a bar stool, and his feet never stopped moving. He was constantly in motion for on that bar stool. His playing was amazing, and he oozed coolness. But really, all the guys were incredible. Hartman, Porter, Simmons, Knudsen, Baxter, et. al. The other funny thing was the smoke.....fully rich in doobie, which was the first I ever smelled that. (I was a sophmore in high school) The air handlers at the Omaha Coliseum back in the day could not keep the air clean, so this cloud of doobie and cigarette smoke would gradually build up throughout, then the air handlers would turn on, and the smoke would be suck out. They’d then turn off, and like 10 minutes later, the coliseum was full of smoke again. My brother and I would try to breath in as much of the clean air as possible when it was sucked out, then slow our breathing down the resting the time. Of course, that did not work. We smelled so bad afterwards. And I had a ring in my ears for days afterwards. But man, was that a kick ass concert. Patrick Simmons came out when the band got on stage and yelled in to the mic......’ It’s good to be back in Omaha!!’. We all just freaked out. Man, and miss those days.
Tiran Porter is the Bass player, an African American. You will like "The Doctor" from the late 80's when they reunited with the original singer. Great Song.
These bands were all great musicians, no studio artists BS they could sing and play like crazy. Thank you for introducing this to a new generation. Great job
Could not click fast enough! I was wondering when you were going to do this one! Oh yeah the harmonica was just laying in the weeds for ya Jamel! 😂 you want some funk? Hot Fun in the Summer Time. Sly and the Family Stone. That was early Doobies with Tom Johnston on vocals
This was my first favorite song, I was maybe 8 or 9 yrs old. My mom didn’t want us to listen to the radio so my grandma gave me a radio for my birthday. I hid it from my mom and this was my first fav songs after having to listen to classical and Disney music. Thanks Grandma!!
Everything in this track is just perfect. The conga percussion is the salt and pepper that flavor it beautifully. The Doobie Brother's are great, I'm so glad they were able to channel these vibrations of love from the universe into such uplifting inspirational body moving grooves to share with the world. ☮️💟🎵
South City Midnight Lady, Dark Eyed Cajun Woman, Natural Thing, Ukiah ---- every song on this album is a gem. A really fantastic debut album from the pre M.M days. Thanks so much. Great memories of summertime with the Doobies!
If you're that knocked out by harmonica look this one up: "Bonnie Raitt - Runaway (Live 1977)", as entertaining as it gets as well as one of the greatest vocalists of all time.
"I Cheat the Hangman" from the Stamped album, was featured on the 70's TV show "Whats Happening" when the Doobies made a special guest appearance. Fun episode as Rerun gets caught up in a scheme trying to secretly tape the concert at the school and the wacky fun ensues.🌟
I've loved this song from day one......a long time ago. Man alive, I'm showing my age! You gotta stick with that 'Fro' brother, its got your name all over it. Stay well.
"South City Midnight Lady! and "LIsten to the Music"..more classics pre-.MM. ALL great, always loved them before and after Michael! They were from San Jose California, and played locally for years. We were lucky ducks to be able to hear them so often!
I love watching you respond to music - so genuine and heartfelt. I was born into this era, with my parents as young hippies in their 20s. It's a time that really can't be expressed in words. It was close to another dimension. Then it ALL went sideways!! Badly. The 80s were just a slow-mo trainwreck (imho). The drugs got harder, the clubs got bigger, and everything got REAL dark. Suddenly everyone was out for themselves. I have a lot of trauma from that. Going from such light to such darkness. Maybe had you been there.....you could have kept everyone dancing and appreciating life. GOD BLESS YOU and your 'good work'
Back when these songs my band played them 5 nights a week in the local taverns and clubs in our city and they always filled the dancefloor. We actually made a living playing doobie brothers songs and other popular groups from that time. The music from that time was awesome.
