With all the cold and snow in Toledo, yes car heaters would be definitely needed in the wintertime. But I rarely went to the drive-in in the winter in San Jose, CA. where I still live because of the cold and rain which would take the fun away from enjoying a movie. Too bad the drive-in near you is gone and nearly all in my city are gone except for one. Many people want them to come back but with the price of real estate and all the technology today, that will never happen, sad to say.
I hope your wish comes true but I would not hold my breath for that, Just not profitable to build a drive-in today, especially when people stay at home alot now and watch movies on their BIG screens and home theaters. Yes, it is NOT the same impact as our beloved drive-ins were but again, it all comes down to dollars and cents to make a profit and the value of real estate today.
That is so common today with kids in families and when we tell them that we were happy growing up without all the tech toys, they do not believe us. But the truth is that we WERE very happy and the kids of today will never know all the fun we had as kids during that time of innocence and simplicity in the 1950's and 1960's. Anyhow, this Google drive-in doodle will forever be my favorite!! And Mike Carroll on RU-vid has an INCREDIBLE drive-in recreation! Check it out!.
Thanks for the notes and I did go to the website and the drive-ins are really nice. Sure wish I lived closer to them and could visit them. I have been in Michigan only once for the 1982 Super Bowl and doubt if I will ever go back to the state anytime soon. I am moving to New Mexico and the state has only 3 drive-ins but not where I am moving to. Darn it!

This is the BEST Google doodle ever!!!!!! Just brings back so many cherished memories of yesteryear when I was growing up in San Jose, CA. in the 1960's and 1970's.
This is my FAVORITE Google doodle since it brings back so many cherished memories of my past fun times of yesteryear under the stars at the drive-in!!!
Thanks for clarifying! There are alot more pros than cons about seeing a movie at a drive-in theater compared to an indoor one. Unfortunately, with fewer and fewer drive-ins around now, so many people will never know the joy of watching a movie under the stars on a hot summer night with family and friends. In the drive-ins that exist today, there are rarely external speakers that the theaters provide like in the old days and the sound from the movie now goes through your car speakers.
Thanks for sharing that comment since I was not aware of that. The younger kids of today will never know all the fun we had as kids at the drive-in in the 1950's, 1960's. and 1970's. I even had a car heater I found in the weeds at a former drive-in before it was demolished. The heater said "Little Inferno" and not all drive-ins had those. It was not in good condition but I kept it for years until I tossed it a couple of years ago. I sure regret that now since it was a piece of history.
By the time drive-ins stopped using in-house speakers and had people turn on their radios for sound, all of the drive-ins in my home town of San Jose, CA. were gone except for one which, by the way, is still in business today. Unfortunately, I have not been there for decades since I hate the location and multi-screens which are so distracting. But even if I used my car radio, I was always afraid that I would drain enough battery power so I could not start my car at the end of the show.
I am confused by this statement. I thought you wanted drive-in movie theaters to come back. Not sure of your age and if you ever enjoyed going to drive-ins before like I did as a kid. I am 59 and I have so many cherished drive-in memories but I am also a realist and know that the drive-ins today will be VERY scarce in this country. In many ways, that is a pity since the kids and families of today will never know what they are missing. Going to a drive-in was a VERY unique experience!!
I wonder how many people viewed "Saving Private Ryan" on an outdoor screen? I found that a very difficult movie to watch knowing my father, at a tender age, had to assault a beach under enemy fire. I remember, with fondness, watching "To Kill a Mockingbird" at the Livingston Drive-In, but question the agenda of the powers that be at Google for choosing the "invention" of 79 years ago over the event of 68 years ago...
Anyhow, I hope you someday can experience the JOYS of going to a drive-in theater. Some states have more than others and you can go online and find out if there is a theater near you. There are also MANY websites related to drive-ins that are worth checking out. Good luck!
Kids now adays do not know what they r missing as the Drive In theater was awesome for whole family.I really miss them as they are all gone now around here.I hate indoor ones now an only watch movies when come out on dvd or ondemand now.We always had a blast at the outdoor theaters.
Thing is, it was basically the same as Windows Mobile 6, or the OS in Black Berries. It was until after iOS that it became a touch OS with pretty much everything we see nowadays.
While if it were up to me I would have had a remembrance of D-Day up there today, they did however forget to have people snuck into the drive in in the truck of a car.
The site of the first drive-in movie was actually in Pennsauken, NJ (my hometown) near Camden, NOT in Camden, NJ. Google got this wrong. Wikipedia has it right.
Sadly, this is also the year that a lot of drive-ins are likely going to go under because they can't afford to make the mandated switch over to digital projection.
The first movie I remember seeing was in a Drive-In movie theater near Alameda, California! It was "Look Who's Talking". I was probably 4 or 5, so I really didn't understand the beginning! :P I really miss this experience.
You think the memories were altered because of your age? Without your daily responsibilities and focused consciousness, being young always seems like "the good old days" because your brain makes you think more things happened than in reality...
I love drive-ins! A pity they seem to all be going away. The one nearest to me was torn down years ago and replaced with a multiplex of walk-in movie theaters. It's a damn shame, I tell you.
Good point......and the kids seem to think that they were born to be given everything without having to do anything!!! Too many parents today are NOT teaching their kids what the words "earn" and "NO!" mean!! That is why we have too many spoiled and disrespectful BRATS today, alot more than when we were growing up when the drive-ins and simpler times were a part of our lives. And we were also happy WITHOUT all the tech, toys of today!

It's a shame that, as great as Drive-In Movie Theaters were, we're celebrating this over those who lost their lives storming Normandy beach in the name of freedom. "D-Day" June 6th, 1944, Never forget the good American, British, Australian, Canadian, New Zealander, French Resistance, and many more lives lost that day.
I would love to see that, too, but with all the media technologies today and the HIGH price of real estate, we will probably continue to see only a small amount of drive-ins left in this country. Land is way too valuable and since people can now see movies in many other ways, the odds of new drive-ins being built in this country are so slim. Too bad that this genre of entertainment is mainly only a memory in most parts of this country. But thank God for the drive-ins that still do exist today.
MO this is disgraceful! Google put this out on June 6th. They had the header up on their search engine but what, might I ask you, is also on June 6th? It’s just a small thing called D-Day! Where thousands of brave Americans lost there lives defending freedom and our way of life. This last June 6th was the 68th anniversary of D-Day and Google should have remembered them instead!!! Shameful!
views on google doodle videos arent showed because if they were they would become the 1# watched videos in the world, and youtube doesnt want to spam the top videos page with doodles
The view count not being there won't be a bug/glitch. They'll have done it intentionally and they'll be a reason behind it. Maybe they don't find it necessary on their own videos? Who knows...
Sorry about the confusion, I typing and not really looking at what I was typing . But I never been to one and would love to go,beats being in a theater.
