The Google Doodle team stars in an homage to the silent film era's greatest star's 122nd birthday. Full disclosure: none of the mustaches in the video are real. More info here: googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/0...
Mr. Polla used his usual pen name "W. C. Powell" on the score for this, in case anyone is having difficulty bringing up the score. RagtimeDorianHenry has digitized it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t1o0DI4bXxY.html
Of course, in comparison, Frederick adds many more notes than in the original score, as most original professional ragtime pianists did when they played (as evidenced by numerous original recordings, piano rolls, and also interviews) The sheet music for most rags, after all, was mainly scored for the amateur pianist at home who had just a few years of lessons.
The thing about Charlie Chaplin, and one of the reasons that I liked Robert Downey Jr.'s casting as him so much, was that he was beautiful. When you look at the old silent films you can see that, in his younger days, he was quite good looking with somewhat feminine features and beautiful eyes which were accentuated by the makeup. Although he was short, as a former circus performer and vaudevillian, he possessed a great deal of physical grace, which he exploited to tremendous advantage in all of his films. Chaplin and his brother were raised by his mother whose father was a drunkard who abandoned them and then they were orphaned when she eventually died. He and his brother lived in grinding, Dickensian poverty in London's workhouses until they were able to begin making their way through show business with Charlie quickly becoming the more popular performer. Chaplin had almost no formal schooling but he was self-taught in many disciplines and was widely viewed as a genius. (CONTINUED)
Chaplin's early days spent in poverty left him with a deep empathy for the downtrodden, the poor and, like himself, for immigrants. Knowing all this about Chaplin is why I find it difficult to enjoy this Google tribute to him. While I like the sentiment, after all who deserves a tribute more than Charlie Chaplin, it's the execution that I am disappointed with. The Google Chaplin is too tall, not very good looking, lacking in the acrobatic fluidity that he had in spades (of course, Chaplin could juggle, and he could roller skate too) and he would never, ever, ever steal the livelihood away from an innocent bystander (he would interfere with "the man" or a bully, but never against a regular schlep just trying to make their way) and therefore stealing an innocent artist's sketchbook is so out of character. The making faces at the cop was also out of character. Chaplin always imbued the Little Tramp with a great deal of dignity, this is why his films had the pathos that they did.
+dhogan1999 if he made faces it was only to amuse to a fellow companion (The Kid) if he did something behind someone's back it was to grab a bit of extra food (Modern Times).
+dhogan1999 That's the real Chaplin. And the writer and director of this Google doodle seem to have only the most superficial knowledge of him, because if they had watched all of his movies they would never have gotten his character and humour so wrong.
@@dhogan1999 you seem to me to be of a peculiar folk... felt alone since Trump's election. Becoming more familiar with one another might interest you I hope

Bravo! I've watched Charlie Chaplin films for over 40 years. This video is a nice tribute to Charlie's "Little Tramp" character that he perfected in the 'teens. Well done, and Thank You, Google!! -- Milo Tsukroff --
They did a pretty good job.... a quite risky one, emulating the best is always tricky... especially if you're not even an actor! Whoever plays Chaplin does it very well! Thanks for all the hard work! Nice to open the browser and find things like this!
Whenever I see Charlie Chaplin, I always think of that episode of Criminal Minds that ends with the team watching some of Chaplin on an old video reel--first season, I think. Makes my day!
That did not compare, at all. Nothing can beat his originality, his unique quality, or his slapstick charm. Nothing can surpass his genius. I'm sorry Google, this definitely was not your best. He simply cannot be re-created. Your 'Chaplin' seemed cookie cutter, yet he may look like him, it does not mean he has his spirit that drew people in and kept them watching and hungry for more. I will say this, "I tip my bowler hat to a Legend. May many more people enjoy and love his genius as I do."
Again, what a wonderful tribute to the King of Pantomime! The only thing I would have done differently would be to shoot it on film. Try as they may, nothing beats film.
Charlie Chaplin's tramp character never would have stolen someone's painting this way (not sure he would have overtly stolen anything), would not have been a bumbling incompetent juggler (his juggling would have conveyed some kind of sympathetic quality), and would not have made a gratuitous face at the policeman behind his back (he might have made a face, but it would have been justified by something the policeman had just done, rather than, in this case, seeming to be happy that he had got away with doing something wrong.) The fact that "Do no Evil" Google can't seem to tell the difference between right and wrong should tell us all we need to know about Google - (that, and it's collaboration with the NSA, et al...)
if the team at google can imitate at that level, then we would see all of them becoming the next Chaplins. This was a tribute meant to have holes everywhere from the start signifying no one can reach his level. So this doodle (also note the name "doodle") is well done and served its purpose excellently.
march 22 Google hid it somewhere but they don't know where it is anymore cause its hidden in a hidden place where it will be hidden 'til youtube is taken down.
Смотрел давно Чарли Чаплина, и вот посмотрел сегодня немного.Какие были тогда технологии и сейчас, и какой огромный талант этого артиста, он, думаю, всегда будет популярен.
@MsOyasumiBakura It certainly is :) And Niles is a great place to grow up and call home. Filled with that small-town-Americana feel. You should definitely visit out here if you ever make it to the U.S.!!
I remember watching a Chaplin episode on a long distance flight. Almost everyone was watching it at the same time. the plane nearly crashed because everyone was laughing so hard, clapping and stomping their feet =)
@alisean08 There were. The first Chinese arrived in Los Angeles in mid-19th century. They lived near Plaza district, east of Alameda Street, where, by the way, Chaplin filmed on location. You can see this old Chinatown, for example, in the famous scene where the Kid throws stones to windows so Charlie can fix them (just to name one). Although by that time Chinatown was already in decline and the Chinese had started to move somewhere else.
Charlie Chaplin -Charlie Chaplin Google always makes me smile,hi hi,ha ha.He is funny, sad on the way alone.Charlie Chaplin Google makes me happy I see him .He is young, handsome,joyful...
The view count is hidden because the video was featured on the google homepage. The google homepage gets so much traffic, this video was probably put on different servers etc. which don't count views the same way youtube does. Also, if technically it wasn't hard to do, showing the view count would give googles competitors information about the number of people going to the google homepage, which is secret info.
