Welcome to Paradise! It's the Dookie Pedal from MXR. Bille Joe Armstrong's Green Day tone in a box. Green day have always been one of my favourite bands and I needed to own this pedal. Does it deliver? Watch the video!

I saw this pedal at my local guitar store yesterday it piqued my interest. After watching a bunch of videos of the pedal, it was your video that sealed the deal for me. Just got the pedal today and it's badass- I love what it does for my tone!

@@TheGuitarGeek I can see a Red Special in the background and I wonder whether I can get the same sound with the Dookie box? It's because so far I only own the Red Special and tried out to get that Greenday sound with the Dookie box after I saw your video, but failed heavily. Volume needed to be put to absolut minimum on the guitar not to get a bad over-the-top gainish sound, and apart from that it never sounded anything near Greenday. So now I wonder whether it's the guitar or my Amp :-(((

Wow! That pedal sounds great, and really close too! I have always found MXR's tone knobs to be full of really usable tones, more so than many other brands. I love early Greenday too, the tones bring back memories. Great to see you enjoying this so much Andy!

I remember seeing Green Day preform live on MTV 120 minutes which played indie / underground / unpopular music videos from midnight until 2am. This was right when Dookie was released, and Green Day could have so easily faded into obscurity had the Longview video not been given regular rotation. Luckily, melodic punk blew up in the early 90’s & every punk band put out a (more) pop album after Dookie exploded.

I have watched several of the demos of this pedal. Thankyou!! Finally a demo by someone who recognizes that the Dookie Drive tone circuit has a lot of (rather brittle) high end available, and explores the tones with the knob set BELOW 12:00!! Thankyou! It does sound like that's where the ballsiest, warmest tones are found. The best the pedal has to offer. And as you said, if you can't cut through a mix by turning the tone knob up higher, maybe you need to bring your amplifier to a repair shop... or put fresh strings on your guitar. I'm not a great Green Day fan, but because the pedal captures the sounds of two great sounding Marshall amps, I hear tones from AC/DC, Rush, and Joe Walsh in this pedal. And with the blend knob turned clockwise I hear Judas Priest and Iron Maiden Marshall tones. I ordered a Dookie Drive of my own last night!

Great audio in this video. Most it was hard to hear the differences with the pedal, but you did a great job, could especially tell with the scoop. Hoping to try and track down one of these pedals before they're all gone, most are $300+ now.

I totally, deeply share your enthousiasm for this pedal and I am glad you got one ! Also, this video sounds even more personal than usual. Basket Case video and passionate strumming was also life-changing for me. Do you think this pedal can be useful even for a practice combo amp or an amp simulation software for someone who doesn't has any cab? Any ideas? Hi Andy, I have a problem : I still only have a beginner amp (the VOX DA5 modelling amp; which is the previous model before the VOX MINI3) and when I plug the Dookie Drive pedal into it (through its clean channel) no sound came from the amplifier : as swichting on the pedal would switch off the amplifier. I first thought my little modelling amp was the faulty one but have you came into such issues with a modelling amp ? Or with an overdrive pedal ? The weird thing is that the pedal's led is lighted on when plugging the amplifier, as if all was in order. Also, I use a 9V supply power as recommended. Help ! Thank you :)

+TheGuitarGeek have you tried the Dookie through an effects loop? It might sound closer if it bypasses the amp coloring the sound and you just amplify the pedal itself through the speaker 🤔🤔

New one out but $200 still. My Caralinabread DLS is a Marshall Super Lead with more distortion. So it actually nails this sound very well! However this has some extra features! I run the DLS like an amp, at 18v for headroom, putting it last drive and running everything else into it. I’m thinking maybe picking up the new V4, and selling either the DLS or Dookie depending on which one I like. I just like the Dookie does a Super Lead and a JCM800. But the DLS has a full band EQ and that high headroom to use like a real amp. I’m guessing this pedal would more or less just go by your Rat or Tubescreamer like a normal pedal.

Great video! Question for you: I have the pedal and it dosen't seem like the gain knob does anything. I don't notice any difference in sound when I turn it all the way up or down. Did you have this experience as well?

When the blend is all the way to the left, the gain doesn't work. Keep the blend at 9 o'clock for a dookie sound

It is about price of "butique" pedal makers like Wampler, JHS, Earthquaker ... From this point of view, it feels overpriced and from this demo it reminds mi of Boss DS1 ...

It's worth the price. The pedal sounds great through my Marshall DSL40, even a 15w Marshall DSL would do it. The tone knob allows it to be used on a Fender head, but it doesn't quite get completely there. It's a Plexi and Modded Plexi in a box, and nails the tone when used with anything like a Blackstar, Vox or Marshall set to a light crunch or clean!

Yeah, get this pedal and you pretty much have Billie Joe's guitar tone for every album. You will just have to adjust the settings and use other pedals with it since Billie Joe has used his Bradshaw modded 59 SLP and his Golub modded 59 SLP pretty much his whole career. He just added pedals like the blues driver pedal for stuff like American Idiot and newer and changed some settings on the amps.

Interesting fact Andy ! I just came around and found out the Dookie drive had been rebranded by MXR with more or less the same philosophy but a less flashy visual/name : «FOD». No need to tell why as you're as keen on Green Day as me :). I just wanted to let you know ! Cheers

Your sure about that? It's cheaper and easier to find, you think all the controls are exactly the same output as in this video. Skeptical since the description they has absolutely zero mention of dookie drive

@@maverick4615 pretty sure at the time of posting since the F.O.D pedal let you blend two marshally sounding amps just like the dookie drive does. The name F.O.D alone is an allusion to Dookie last track which achieved to convince me. Why rebranding then ? I don't remember well where I read this but the amps modeled in this pedal aren't set exactly the same, so maybe they wanted to do something similar with «their own twist» regarding the sound. Otherwise, maybe it is a way to sell a very similar pedal without the royalties or maybe the name Green Day which dissuaded other people to buy it and who would have still enjoy it without the dookie thing as it is : a double marshall in a box pedal. Anyway the conception and the name are kind of a tribute. That's only guesswork but I find the description and name way too troubling. But the only way to be sure would be to get ahold of it :)

I heard that the blend controlled the 'pete' and 'meat' rather that the dookie/insomniac sounds? Never mind, great pedal, just expensive and can see it being one of those that resales for more on the used market

Green Day is my favorite band since i saw "basket case on tv in the 90`Ps. ...creative and timeless music!..(on dookie he used a boss-ds1. and on later Albums the bs-1 from boss i think)

These pedals are still available. And there's nothing about them being a limited edition on the MXR website. So I wonder where some vendors get the limited to 3000 pieces claims from.
