@@Rountree1985 People like you are the WORST! Would you rather RU-vid implement something stupid like a minimum character requirement for comments? If something THAT minor bothers you that much, then you should stay out of the RU-vid comments section (or off the internet in general). So what if I posted a one worded comment? It's not hurting anyone, and besides, more comments on great content like this helps tell the RU-vid algorithm that this is a good video! Do you really have nothing better to do then nitpick stupid shit on the internet all day? Get a life!
Fun fact: the copyright/trademark of a number thing was settled a few years before the N64, when Intel sued AMD for calling their chips "486", it was ruled you can't brand numbers like that, and that's why Intel named it "Pentium" (instead of 586 as planned). Nintendo had really good lawyers so presumably they were aware of all that and didn't try it a second time.
They didn’t say that much, but in my twitch chat the devs mentioned that changing the name was discussed and I’m sure someone said the word “Absolution”.
@@StopSkeletonsFromFighting at least for the switch version keep it 64 because of the Nintendo connection that's my thought anyways and i will only grab doom 1 and 2 when the sewers and the other level are added in the console ports
I suspect that the developers of DOOM Eternal would have the third game in the NuDOOM series to take on the Absolution moniker. Considering that NuDOOM 1 and NuDOOM 2 are vaguely based on their classic equivalents, why not DOOM 64 as inspiration for the third entry?
Just wondering...did you know there is a mod for Doom that recreates Zombies ate my neighbors? Thought I'd mention since that seems right up your alley.
Yeah, I thought about getting them recently, but having no multiplayer what so ever killed it for me. I'll stick to playing doom on PC, I prefer it that way anyways. I had hoped, but not expected, that Doom 64 would add multiplayer. With it being a modern port and what not.
Doom 64 on Playstation is the most cursed thing since that dude in the Crash costume in the ads, especially since they *_specifically mention the Nintendo 64_* in the description on the Playstation store.
12:34 Sewers and Betray aren't the only missing levels, the Playstation (and Saturn) versions had 8 exclusive levels, 5 for Doom 1, 3 for Doom 2 and they were designed by American McGee and the Doom 64 map designers, pretty good maps.
too any fans out there, one really neat feature added to the switch port of Doom 1 & 2 (im unsure if the other consoles got this) is a added D-pad hotkey for quick and easy weapon select, to my knowledge this is the first time a console port of Doom/Doom 2/Final Doom/ect has gotten hot keying instead of relying solely on scrolling.
As a huge doom fan I never played this originally. I played this on switch recently and couldn't believe how amazing it was. It was like a weird combo between doom 2 and quake. So good
Stop Skeletons From Fighting+ I can verify the softlock with the red skull key, I am sure you thought exactly how I did, and not grabbing the key right away because of the chance of spawning in a bunch of monsters, so you probably were preparing for a big fight but then discovered you couldn't get back to the area, I was so mad when it happened that because I play on the Steam version, I simply nocliped back to where I needed to be lol, and for the Lost Levels themselves, all you need to do is beat Hectic and they unlock right away, beating the main campaign is simply another option. :)
Thanks again, Derek for introducing me to this game in your original HVGN video back in the day. Like so many others, I was convinced that Doom 64 was just yet another port of the original. Boy, that name did NOT do that game any favors. You have to wonder what they were thinking. I really hope they'll someday do a physical release of Doom 1,2,3 and 64 in a nice packed bundle with all the DLC and download stuff pre-loaded so I will always have it right there and handy on the shelf.
Totally agree. DOOM 64 remaster is to me absolute perfection. I got both PS4 and Switch versions day 1, because hey $5. And Ive alternated a playthrough on them both. The gamma fixes alone are all this needed but overall everything is absolutely perfect. Doom 64 is one of my favorite games of all time and these updates may honestly make these current versions my favorite games of all time. Game of the Year candidate absolutely. Can we please get a physical release of this remaster somehow? Limited run? Anyone? Id devour a special edition of this.
Now I can't wait for Derek to do Switch DOOM 2016/Eternal. I Plaitnum'd Eternal on my PS4, but will drop it as soon as that Switch port is announced. That is how much Panic Button impressed me with their work.
I'm super close to getting 100% achievements on PC. In fact I haven't done it because battlemode is broken on pc with stupidly insane lag and glitches.
Doom Eternal Switch only came out in December finally, although now it's digital only as they cancelled the physical release, so anyone who pre-ordered physical can claim a free download code or voucher for it I believe depending on the store policy...or just buy one in stores. The stores will have the box cover if you really want to be a collector I guess.
Doom 3 matches the Doom bible, which is about as cannon as it gets. They should pay Tom Hall if they ever make another Doom game, to write it. Fantastic writer 😊
So glad they remastered and re-released D64. It revived my interest in not only 5th-gen console Doom but old-school Doom, in general. I'm playing a PC Doom mod combo that features all maps from UD and D2 but with D64 map textures, N64/PSX-esque lighting, Brutal Doom 64 V2.666's gameplay and monsters, a visor HUD for extra immersion, and ofc Hodges' PSX OST (25th anniv. edition). My favorite so far. It's like the PSX and N64 ports combined _and_ pumped with more horror.
I wonder if Nintendo Power called in an Egyptian Motif because the middle right screenshot looks a lot like the opening area of Pharaoh, the first secret level of TNT: Evilution from Final Doom which had said Egyptian Motif and Nintendo Power assumed it was based on that? Honestly when I quickly glanced at the scan and screenshots I thought it was that level because the "pyramid" looks nearly identical shape wise.
Would actually be really keen for you to do a video or series on all the Duke Nukem spinoff games. The random ones on the PS1/64/PC that came out after 3D while we waited on Forever to come blow us away as the real follow up (LOL). They're often overlooked and forgotten about and never got re-released and I feel like they'd be right up your alley to help shed some light on the super 90's game history of Duke always being on the shelves for the kids with attitude.
Seeing how they have Final Doom (TNT/Plutonia) on the Switch, I wonder how long it'll be before a Master Levels console port gets greenlit. Heck, I still ahve my PC disc of Maximum Doom; 1600 WADs that vary from "actually kind of alright" to "I used the map editor for the first time", put 'em all on there! Considering how far Doom WAD mapmaking has come since then, you gotta see where it all started.
Derek, My wife Melissa thinks she saw you or someone who looks like you back in November at Northgate Mall she said to me "Hey It's Derek! it's him Derek!"
Despite owning Doom 64 on the Nintendo 64, I never played the game until this re-release, which I completely loved. I love the tighter map designs and the lighting effects, and of course, dual analogue control. Regarding the soundtrack, most of my early Doom days were spent with the PS1 version, so I got used to a pretty scary soundtrack... I still miss those levels with the babies crying in the background!
I missed out on DOOM 64 back in the day but in a way I’m glad because having a retro DOOM that’s new to me in 2020 is amazing. Not to mention Streets of Rage 4 which dropped today! So much gaming to do!
i cant believe it, it turns out the channel ive been enjoying for years was the channel which talked about doom 64 and possibly 3d monster maze all those years ago
Nightdive are a fantastic company and one of the most important in the industry. My dream is that Capcom, Square Enix, and Konami will hire them to make collections of old school Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, and Silent Hill.
IIRC the reason the game ended up being so dark was because the monitors the devs at midway used were using a different color space, so it showed up fine on their monitors. they didn't realize how dark it was until they showed it to other midway staff on different tvs
HOLY CRAP YOU ALSO SOFTLOCKED YOURSELF! I was playing on the hardest mode and that room was brutal, so I had the amazing idea of booking it, picking the red card and jumping out like a cool action hero, and I thought i had picked it up, saved the game, got to the door, had no key, couldn't go back, had to pistol start, big dumb, much idiot.
As always, love all the great Doom content. How about some ancillary videos about the other Doom-like games (eg: Hexen, Heretic, Chex Quest, Blake Stone, Descent, Alien Trilogy, Star Wars: Dark Forces, Dark Arena (GBA), Cruis'n Velocity (uses Dark Arena Engine), etc.)? I've watched all your Doom videos, but it's been a while so you may have touched on some of these already.
Samuel "Kaiser" Villareal is a God (Devil if you prefer?) in the Doom community! The last 2 times this guy remastered Doom 64? He just did it out of love for that game. Glad he's getting paid this time!
Glad to see other people love Doom 64 as much as me! It was the Absolution TC that got me really into source ports back in the day! I worked on a SNES Doom Mod because of it, my programming was limited though..
I'd love to hear your thoughts on all these Switch ports of last gen versions of games like NiNoKuni for example. Not a cheap video to make but it'd be fun to see what you uncover there.
Because I already had DOOM 1-2 and Hexen on PC I didn't think much of Doom64 upon release. Also at the time FPS games were starting to take off, especially on PC. But now I love it and think it's a perfect entry into the series. I love the tone and atmosphere of it. Originally I thought the sound effects and music was unique to Doom64, until I finally saw and played the PS1 port a couple of years after.
I've never been this early, but I see that Death Stranding on your home screen. What did you think of it? Love the callback to "YOU CAN'T TOP THAT" BTW.
@@StopSkeletonsFromFighting Thanks for the response! Yeah, I heard a ton of things about it, and not all of it was good. I thought it was amazing, and definitely the kind of game that Kojima wanted to make. Of course, I also spent about 10 hours of my 60 hours building roads...but that's neither here nor there. Great video, as always!
Dont think you've talked about Doom 2016's switch port yet. Hope to see what your thoughts are on that port and its history when we eventually get Eternal on the switch down the line.
To be honest, I can't even imagine playing some of those later levels with joycon controllers on anything harder than "hurt me plenty". Which I realize that's probably what most people do anyway but replay value is nice. I imagine having motion control aiming would be a must.
I'm surprised Derek hasn't done a Punching Weight vid on Weird things running Doom. There's Doom on a pregnancy test, an LCD billboard, oscilloscope, ATM, car nav screen, and even one that's played by pressing keys on a piano. Doom's been open source since 1999. Get to it, man!
8:56 Is the name "the lost levels" for Doom 64 Remaster's extra levels a nod to the Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 known to international audiences as The Lost Levels or am I crazy?
I do not know why, but you singing the praise of the Doom 64 Ports just reminds me of Nostalgia Critic reviewing both Sonic Shows(with the modern og doom ports being sonic adventure and the modern doom 64 Ports being sonic sat am)
Another thing worth noting is that Kaiser and his group made sure to make it as accurate as possible, even with the texture filtering that Nintendo 64 uses since they've literally straight up picked up Nintendo 64 and the original game for the research.
11:02-12:34 as of August 8, 2024, the Unity ports of Doom I + II have recently been delisted from digital storefronts (now that they're selling folks a newly bundled version of these games, courtesy of Nightdive). The Unity ports are still accessible to anyone who already bought them (and the new release is given to users for free).
