I just wanted to show my appreciation for Mike’s continual attempts to shoehorn Discworld and Earthsea references into the show despite the contestants frequently not recognising them.
I DON'T CARE NONE HAS READ THEM, THE PEOPLE HAS TO KNOW! seriously though, books are by the simple fact that there are so many of them, more niche, so it's logical that they'd be harder for people who arent specifically fantasy book nerds. I would love more book questions though. Also, maybe more anime questions, simply because as a genre it's less "white".
Yeah earthsea is hands down my favorite. I havnt read a lot of fantasy( more of a classic sci fi guy) but I feel like the ultimate badass everytime I get the earthsea references and no one else does.
Was already reading Discworld stuff, but legit started reading the Earthsea books this past week because, as he says, it sounds pretty cool. I am on book 3 of Earthsea Cycle. [:
I'm always so surprised when people do not know about Earthsea, especially the more book-focused participants. It's a staple in fantasy and I think people have always at best a superficial knowledge of them. But then can perfectly recall every word in the endless Robin Hobb word stew
They should do a World History version of Um Actually where they have Brennan, Zach and some other nerd to get heated over discussions of Napoleonic bs
Ursula K Le Guin is one of the best sci fi and fantasy authors ever. If you haven't read her books, treat yourself to something special and potentially life changing and pick one up.
It's so hard to believe she was doing this stuff in the 60s. Really wish Trapp had brought that up. She was **way** ahead of the curve. Also her books dunk on Harry Potter from every angle, pre-emptively no less.
Earthsea is a FANTASTIC book! It has such an interesting take on magic and world building. It's incredibly creative. Definitely recommend it to any fans of classic fantasy.
If he was a nerd he’d be the personification of the show “Um, actually no one reads like Gaston, or plays like Gaston. No one correct other nerds like Gaston”
Um Actually, the original 1993 Doom takes place on Phobos (Knee Deep In the Dead), Deimos (The Shores of Hell), Hell (Inferno), and Earth (Inferno epilogue). Although Mars is mentioned in the story detailed by the instruction manual, it's never a location in-game. Brief explainer: Doom (1993), is split into three episodes (Knee Deep In the Dead, The Shores of Hell, and Inferno), with each having eight missions plus one secret mission.
There's also The Ultimate Doom, the 1995 release, which added an extra episode (Thy Flesh Consumed) which is (most likely -- there's some dispute) set on Earth.
That’s exactly why I have watched so much of this, it’s like they are all just hanging out and playing a board game, except one of the friends happens to be making the game
I can’t believe someone would honestly compare Eragon to anything by LeGuin. The relationship with Arya alone is problematic as hell and way worse than anything LeGuin would write. Intensely Tolkien-derivative, the best you can say about Eragon is that it was an impressive first foray for a horny 19-year-old.
Balamb Garden isn't a Magic School, it's a paramilitary school for Soldiers (Seeds), Magic is free range in FFVIII world and you can learn it anywhere.
In fact Irvine doesn’t learn magic at all when attending Galbadia Garden, Balamb’s sister school, and his lack of his exposure to magic is a part of a major plot twist in the latter half of the game.
It's not primarily a magic school but it does teach magic. The tutorial is Squall being tested on knowing how to junction GFs and draw and junction magic with Quistis specifically teaching him (and the player) how the magic system of that world works
@@TheWhite2086 but it also functions to teach a whole range of things related to being soldiers in a magical world, so it isn't specifically a magic school. Hogwarts only teaches magic. Brakebills only teaches magic. Balamb also teaches gun swords and betrayal.
@@TheJuliana0901 she wrote a lot of great short stories, so that would be a pretty good place to start. "The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas" is a pretty famous one of those short stories, you likely read it in school. Otherwise just jump into Earthsea headfirst, those books super hold up.
@@TheJuliana0901 Earthsea has already been recommended, and I can only concur! But in addition, if you're ever in the mood for some philosophical sci-fi I'd very much recommend The Dispossessed (themes include: anarchism, freedom, revolution & utopia) and The Left Hand of Darkness (sex, gender, religion).
Um, actually, Beppo the Super Monkey, Krypto the Super Dog, and Comet the Super Horse are products of the Silver Age (1959, 1955, and 1962 respectively) rather than the Golden Age which Trapp erroneously identified.
Also, Supergirl has multiple origins. I DEFINITELY remember the billboard in front of the Superman ride at Six Flags identifying her as a literal angel from another planet (that was not Krypton), and in the DCAU she was from a sister planet to Krypton.
@@ccggenius supergirl has been a mess with dc occasionally wanting superman to be the true last kryptionian but her original and current origin is that she's the cousin of supes and from krypton
I've always wondered how gone with the wind managed to earn so much money...had no idea it was the only movie in theaters for a while...makes so much sense.
Many releases through the years, as well as cinemas being much, much cheaper back then and it was a bit more of a casual thing to do, so loads of people just went to see it on a whim. Keep in mind that ticket sales weren't as vigorously tracked so the numbers are slight estimates, and inflation isn't always linear, as in not everything gets more expensive all at the same time.
Yeah, that was filmed in Ireland. Probably the confusion is because so many movies are filmed in Iceland and it is home to the largest Puffin population in the world.
Um actually, the reason passports must be done by mail is because the postal service is (theoretically) accessible by anyone, so anyone can get a passport by visiting their local post office. Not everyone has access to the internet (or knows how to use it), but almost everyone can go to their post office and mail stuff with the assistance of the staff.
Umm Actually! Hobnobs are NOT candy Trapp, the contestant was correct in that they are a Biscuit (or Cookie to the yanks, which surprised me when they refered to it as a Biscuit) made of Oatmeal.
If I went to a wedding and I was seated at a table with these four people, I would feel like I got the best seat at the wedding. Y'all just have such warm, fun energy.
Idea for stealing points, possibly for a thieves themed episode. If you identify what is wrong but don't correctly correct it, either by incorrect correction or not trying, then if someone correctly corrected it they steal one of your points.
I really like this idea because it rewards full answers, but maybe if it is a permanent or trial thing, it can be used exclusively as a comeback mechanic to keep the game closer if the one who is down does the requirements for the steal.
Um actually, the 2005 Doom film specifically turned the demonic evil into an extra chromosome early martians discovered that can (and I wish I was making this up, but it's literally in the script) ... detect evil. If your a nice guy or himbo you become super human. And you are turned into a bloodthirsty demonic monster if you are either a murderer, or just even the tiniest bit of an asshole.
Have there really not been? I just assumed there had been. They should definitely do the one where they have a grid of images and it's whoever can spot the incorrect shiny pokemon first
Um actually, there is a technique in Naruto called Izanami that traps your opponent in a Groundhog Day style time-loop until they choose a destiny that is favorable to the user. It was created by the Uchiha clan as a direct counter to Uchiha's who abused the technique Izanagi, which allows the user to essentially rewind time a few minutes/seconds and avoid unfavorable futures. In Naruto Shippuden, the only person who knows these techniques is Itachi Uchiha due to a distinct lack of living Uchihas.
Trapp is right. In a previous episode of the show he asked a question about Samurai Champloo, which I never heard of prior and I checked it out because of this show.
I think that's just every fandom if you reach a certain amount of people in it. Just the critical mass changes depending on what the fandom is and who the community is originally probably.
Um Actually 1939 was a banner year for movies. in addition to _Gone with the Wind_ there was _The Wizard of Oz,_ _Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,_ _Stagecoach,_ _Ninotchka,_ _The Man in the Iron Mask,_ _Goodbye Mr. Chips,_ _The Hunchback of Notre Dame,_ _Gunga Din,_ and like a ton others. It has long been considered the single greatest year in film. But then you didn't have TV, video games, youtube, _Um, Actually_ etc. to distract you from your sucky life. Books, radio and film, that's it.
UM ACTUALLY a hobnob is not ‘candy’. It’s a a biscuit, made of oats. Even if you were using the American term, it’s closer to a cookie than candy. Sincerely, a very annoyed Englishman.
Gotta say-- I subscribed to Dropout specifically for Um Actually, with the plan being to binge all the old episodes and then cancel. Of course, after seeing Jess Ross on this show a bunch of times I checked out her show with Rekha. Yeah, I just cancelled Amazon Prime so I could keep my Dropout sub and still not be spending extra money.
It it me or every single episode Joan is on, she just SMASHES and you don’t ever anticipate it!!!! She seriously knows her shit and the depth of some of her answers is so dope to see! Go Joan!!! You’re a FUCKin rock star!
Um, Actually, Balamb Garden is not a magic school, but a mercenary academy (for teens, because of course). Also, I don't feel like calling magic in Final Fantasy 8 'magic' is particularly accurate since they're all consumable and extracted from monsters and the environment.
I was gonna say. It’s a school where you learn all aspects of combat, some of which includes magic. But I’d classify it more as a military school than anything.
@@EStramel09however, the main thing that sets SeeD apart from other armed forces is their use of magic, so in the context of being a military academy, they are the magic school.
Similarly, I was thinking "Monkeys, huh? If there's a single gorilla here, I'm gonna lose it!" Luckily, it actually was just monkeys, so my wrath has been mollified as well.
Good episode. Never read earthsea, but for some reason I immediately called it the the answer would be about the skin colour. They would not have included that if it wasnt
Ummmm actually “jutsu” don’t *necessarily* create magical effects. Ninjutsu and genjutsu produce magical effects, taijutsu however is just really good martial arts and doesn’t require the use of chakra. They dont all create magical effects but they are all “jutsu”.
They need an episode where they correct movie conversions. Like, they say a fact of something that happened in the live action ATLA movie, and then the contestants have to correct it. You can do book to movie conversions, like eragon, or show to movie like ATLA, or even comic to movie conversions like superhero comics to movies. "The lead characters name is Ong, spelled with an A." "Um actually, it's pronounced Aang."
I'm there with the people who use this show to update my Nerd Homework and Reading Lists. Because of this, I'm halfway through Name of the Wind and I can comfortably say that it's already one of my favorite books of all time. So thanks, Um, Actually, for the recommendations!
Um... Actually! "Balamb Gardens" is not a thing. It is "Balamb Garden". Also, it is not a magic school, it is a military academy for mercenaries that just happens to have some classes on magic, but we never ever actually see any of those classes, so it's only vaguely implied because some of the students use magic. Also also, Magic in that world is something you extract from monsters, it cannot actually be taught. Do y'all not have any Final Fantasy fans on staff?
Um... Actually! Jutsu are not magic spells. Though I'm sure someone else corrected that in a future episode, because I swear I saw that correction in another episode.
Umm, actually, Supergirl originally hailed from Argo City, a surviving fragment of Krypton, not Krypton itself, so "Supergirl was never on Krypton" is true for "A" Supergirl. And we don't speak of the others :P
Mike mentions Golden Age comics (at 19:48 and 20:30), but Beppo the Super-Monkey is actually from the Silver Age, as was Comet the Superhorse - I think Krypto just skates in as "Golden Age" but his family Zypto, Vypto and Nypto are also Silver Age (these three appear in only one story ever, I think - somebody did some DEEP digging). P.S. Comet is a rare example of the Post-Crisis version being even crazier than the Pre-Crisis one.
That dress Joan is wearing looks like the meme "blue/black or White/Gold" dress. Knowing this group, I would not be surprised if it was a reference to that 😂
I never expect to hear about Brakebills or anything magicians related because they seem to be such rare references but it was nice to hear the name again
Um, Actually, Streaky the supercat also isn't from Krypton. Streaky is given his powers by Supergirl who was experimenting with a piece of kryptonite that she haphazardly just tossed aside. Only Krypto (who was sent into space as a test flight for Kal-El and similar to Kara Zor-El was thrown off trajectory to Earth resulting him arriving late) and Bepo who hitched a ride in Kal-El's ship were actually from Krypton. Krypto will also be voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the near future in an animated DC's League of Super-Pets which was a funny bit of trivia since earlier in this episode they joked about Dwayne Johnson becoming "The Metal" and also the age-old "Rock, Paper, Scissors" joke. :)
Is Balamb Garden really a Magic School™? It's been a while but my memory would define it as a military school that includes magic as part of its coursework. The focus is on training a mercenary force.
ummm, actually... SNL also featured Gar'ma'Nar'Nar, three things that the announcer never gets back to and a hole in the wall where the men can see it all.
While I'm sure someone has already said it, UM ACTUALLY 1993's Doom only takes place in three locations: Phobos, Deimos, and Hell. You never visit Mars. And if you count Ultimate Doom, episode 4's Thy Flesh Consumed takes place on Earth.
I know this is years late, but I have seen people only correcting the Ireland/Iceland mixup… Um, Actually… it’s not that there were too many puffins to clear the shots. It’s that they were not allowed to disturb them at all because they are a protected species.
You can tell Kung Fu Panda the TV series from the movies, because of that one scenery they reuse all the time with the very flat ground and four bamboo trees in the background. And obviously for the total lack of any animated 3D hair/fur.
my biggest flex is actually knowing the krypton question because supergirl was in a relationship with cosmo when he was human and it continued WHILE HE WAS A HORSE
you forgot to mention that the second comet (from the best run of supergirl EVER #teamprotosupergirl) was also and earth angel, specifically the earth angel of ice. BOOP
Riffing off the Mario Party idea for points, it might actually be fun to have a few "bonus stars" like they do in Mario Party. Maybe best joke or most interesting fact or something.
