Firstly - thanks for writing such an inspiring and awesome soundtrack and doing these videos - you've helped a disillusioned producer remember why this is such fun! Secondly, realise this isn't an AMA, but there are three things I would love to know, if you happened to read this post... 1. Was moving from more organic to synthetic instrumentation during the course of the soundtrack a deliberate choice? e.g. Earth with discernible guitar and drums (like Rip & Tear) vs Hell with ultimately just synthetic sounds (like Mastermind)! 2. The level of detail in each track is insane - do you create a sound palette at the start of a composition project which you then work with in audio in each track? 3. Is there a particular compressor you use on your masters? Each track feels superglued, and the transients are so snappy!
@MickGordon
@MickGordon 7 лет назад
Hey! 1 - Somewhat. I was interested more in the 'distance' between the two. Rather than grounding one as Earth and one as Hell, the space in between was super interesting. 2 - Pretty much. I start with a groove and build sounds from there. Also, the incredible Richard Devine produced a huge palette of sounds for the music too. He's one of the most inventive and creative musicians ever. 3 - I usually use two compressors. The first is for character, the second is for control. The second compressor is always a Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor in dual mono mode. The first changes a lot - sometimes the UAD Fairchild (Harbinger and Rip & Tear), the UAD Manley (most of the ambient tracks), the UAD Fatso (BFG Division), or a Retro Doublewide (SkullHacker), or a Cali 76 (Vega Core, Mastermind, At Doom's Gate).
@BeatNikProject
@BeatNikProject 7 лет назад
Wow. Thanks so much for your thorough reply! I now also have serious gear envy with the Shadow Hills compressor. Anyway, again, amazing work man - look forward to hearing the next project!

Более того, выкопали Кузьмина и сделали компоненты полика в виде модулей для систем типа той, что видна на видео. Моё мнение - его заюзали просто ради внешнего вида и звуковой грязи. Западные и японские фильтры как правило намного благозвучнее.

I normally HATE glitchy electronica music (industrial, dubstep, and the like), but watching you use that synth and fiddle with all the various patches and effects really helped me appreciate it. I see that some tangible work goes into it and it's not just music made by a computer.

Awesome talent, and great pleasure for us, your listeners!

Wow, Mick, the amount of dedication, passion and geekness you put into your projects is insane. Listening to your tracks with headphones is an outworldy (hellish?) experience. I love the tiny deitails, the drops, the mixing, the weird sounds; it's evident that you pick every single note and sound carefully. Congratulations, keep the amazing work and thanks for this! Mick, seriously. This sound track is the perfect love letter to the original Doom soundtrack, it's tracks all hold their own unique presence, where as a lot of modern game soundtracks use the same riff or refrain and just remix the shit out of it, you aren't afraid to find each song's own personality. Thank you so much for this.

@MickGordon
@MickGordon 8 лет назад
What would you like for a collector's edition? Unreleased tracks? Stems? etc?
@NEZLeader
@NEZLeader 8 лет назад
+Mick Gordon oh yes. Unreleased tracks, even samples/concepts not used (kind of like Pet Sounds box set discs 2-5 by Brian Wilson or the PSX Enix games composed by Motoi Sakuraba including used backing or unused "sfx" test sounds) , any personal audio notes, maybe a special graphic booklet or your signature on it? Individually Numbered? Special patch or decal specific to you (not DooM itself) like your name and done in a very good graphic or if you have a cartoon or symbol you use to individually identify yourself would be a welcome edition to the metal militia patch collection I'm sure a lot of fans have. Have say, the CE be a 2-disc instead of 1-disc just the soundtrack (disc 1 = official OST, disc 2= Gord's Gold {unreleased concepts}) , possibly a premium edition gets the purchaser a digital copy of it as well (or have digital-only options as well, but I personally am a collector I would buy the discs as well as a separate digital copy). Other ideas too, but my wallet is already breaking at my bank card trying to jump out at any moment to buy this. you are an amazing composer I very much like your work and I will support your works because I believe in you and the music that you create. I wanted to ask you before, who your inspiration(s) is(are) in doing this sound experimentation/creation/manipulation, because of what you are doing to The Sound itself is eerily similar to what Brian Wilson was experimenting with in 1965 and 1966 for Pet Sounds and SMiLE in terms of using objects and instruments in ways that they originally were not intended to be played and manipulated but the sounds that were created as a result were amazing, as is with yours as well, that is what piqued my question as to where you gained your Inspirations from? thank you again for creating something very enjoyable for people and I can't wait to hear more. :)
@NEZLeader
@NEZLeader 8 лет назад
+Mick Gordon Even remixes or alternate versions of OST tracks, maybe remixes made by famous musicians/dj's or friends/fans of yours to fill in remaining space on 2nd disc (I know Royksopp doesn't get out much but a remix track to their style would sound super interesting as well for example) . I'm a staff member in the DooM (2016) Fan Club FaceBook group and some things people have posted have been very interesting (mostly personal play of your tracks on guitar), lots of inspiration by your hand. Maybe hold a contest and top 3 winners get their tracks as bonus tracks? Meh, I got lots of ideas like that, for me personally I love hearing unreleased and alternate versions along with background stuff so I can hear a song is built from the ground up that's why I like this two-part series of videos you have released.
