Yeah i agree, it sucks to take up a rune slot for something that should be default... you're the Doom Slayer ffs, you can already Dash and Double-Jump, you really need a rune to move in the air a bit easier...? Weird
I can imagine that console players, playing with the default controls, get little use out of air control. Since jumping and dashing involves taking your thumb off the right stick.
@@Alejandro_87 yeah. It especially fucks me over in multiplayer as im used to being able to go right or left while im in the air and then he just goes forward when im playing slayer in multiplayer
In a game as heavily reliant on movement as DOOM Eternal, "Air Control" is a mandatory rune, IMO. All the other things are really very situational but air control is a precious tool in any given fight.
It's a necessity in Doom 2016, but isn't as important in Eternal because of your dashes. It's still worth using, though, and it's one of the runes I used for my UN run.
I find air control, faster glory kills, and equipment reload the best. Nothing worse than getting out of a glory kill and being unable to move because you're surrounded
And it never recharges unless you die. Pretty sure it recharges in DOOM 2016 when you get to the next level but in DOOM: Eternal you only get to use it ONCE unless you die completely.
Nucleus it’s helpful for ultra nightmare but then again you would still have 2 lifes only. I guess it doesn’t recharge like in doom 2016 since it would make ultra nightmare easier.
The slowdown rune I think is fine in arenas without jump pads. You only need to be in the air for it to activate, but it doesn't require you to be in the air for it to remain active. You can just jump, right click and then after landing as long as you're still holding right click you'll still be in slow-mo. Air control is severely underrated by you as well IMO.
Saving Throw also gives several seconds of invulnerability. And it absolutely can get you out of bad situation. Though it's not a rune to constantly have equipped but rather an emergency swap one. For a first playthrough when you do not know arena layouts and spawn order of demons it is invaluable. Also you don't need launch pads to use Chrono strike. A regular jump gives more than enough airborne time to use it... So replacing the best rune in rooms without much verticality (meaning less escape options) is an awful piece of advice.
You can still use chrono with double jump, yes, but I don't think it's as useful in rooms without many jump pads or platforms because getting a clear line of sight to take out a weak point is harder, and given you're firing much "straighter" I found I didn't need it to hit those shots. Are you playing on console or PC?
Thank you, the last time I played Doom was Doom 1 on floppy disk. I just started doom eternal. With work, I don't have time to explore maps like I use. You have gave me a much more happy gaming experience! I appreciate you, and what you do! I am subscribing. I did the same with milkandcoookies with his love of war hammer 2 and Vermin Tide 2 gameplay. Keep doing your thing, and stay safe!
The quick Glory Kills rune is super good because it allows you to get armor from a Glory Kill after a flaming Meathook on certain Demons you can't get otherwise.
I'll contradict myself a bit: The rune that gives a speed boost after glory kills I think might be the 3rd best rune. It helps you take less damage and position yourself much faster around the battefield. Blood fueled is my favorite glory kill rune followed by dazed and confused. It is basically a superior version of the dash refilled on glory kill suit upgrade IMO
Me when using far lunge, faster glory kills, and faster movement speed: "Goddamnit, how are they killing me even though I'm going 3000 mph?" Me when I put on in air control: "Ohhhh!"
@@wj00312 With practice you can get decent with a controller, but it's no match for a mouse. If consoles started supporting mouse and keyboard controls, I'd probably never bother with PC gaming again. Other than graphics, that's the one edge a PC has for gaming, and it's a big one.
@@solarprophet5439, yes, "decent". However, decent isn't going to cut it when I want to make the move to "Nightmare" and above. 😄 I completely agree that keyboard/mouse is the way to go. I've found found compatible keyboard/mouse combinations for the PS4. I've also found modded controllers for FPS games. The cheapest option seems to be a Sony brand back button for the PS4 controller. I'm looking into that one, especially for this freaking game.
To be honest air control, chrono strike, and equipment fiend are my 3 also by Jumping normally and or even better double jumping will allow u to use chrono strike and will last a short while on the ground. also seek and destroy is useless since you can Just dash or use the super shotgun meat hook.
Saving Throw Rune has really been useful to me in long fights esp slayer gates. It gives opportunity to gain health back up by temporarily running away from tougher enemies and focusing on fodder enemies.
I can't imagine playing without blood-fueled when I survive on glory kills and mobility. The extra speed makes the game a lot more fun also. Naturally it pairs amazingly well with Seek and Destroy. Saving throw is nice when you're still not a pro and trying to learn enemy combat patterns, but later in the game it's a lot less useful. Also it doesn't trigger when you have extra lives in stock.
That thight ass arena in the hotel or whatever, was a pain in the ass, i found my self often sandwiched between enemies when i try to escape, and those whiplashes, godi hate them
@@monoespacial I did! I'm actually following your mod/flight path as we speak. I'm play on X one X......controls are a little less precise than PC. Dumbed down the difficulty
Air mobility and glory kill speed are must haves imo. If you're low on health and really need that glory kill, it can help to be able to get out faster. Demons can also predict your jump arc, so being able to change direction is amazing and you can use the mobility to skip certain platforming sections. I also disagree with getting ammo crystals first. They're nice and all, but being able to take more hits is far more important than being able to deal more hits before having to chainsaw
If im honest i never used chrono Strike un my first play through on normal except ones in the Khan makyr fight and i made it first try because head shoting is so easy and you get easy ammo and hp but on nightmare mode the chrono Strike rlly helped much cuz my aim isnt that good
After using chrono strike rune a lot in nightmare difficulty, it feels like ID Software intentionally put this rune to help overcome the difficulty. I also realize the slow motion can sometimes break the momentum during gameplay. Just equip savagery, blood fuel and air control( or seek & destroy whatever suits you) to realy feel the crazy speed of the doomguy combat.
I’m to the point where I have my own preferences and agree and disagree in certain areas but I’ve never heard of demons taking more damage when on fire. Where did you hear that from?
Suit upgrades. ALWAYS GET.....Hot Swapper first! For fast weapon and mod swaps. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!! Then get Grappler for faster climbing. These are both cheap and OP. Especially the weapon swap. Quick weapon swap is OP. It effectively adds like double damage. The trick is using really powerful weapons that have long delays between each shot like the Super Shotgun, Rocker launcher, and the Ballista. It makes it seem like it was designed this way so they would be just as powerful as the rest of the guns, but this line of thinking is not at all what they want from you. They want you to use all the weapons. By weapon swapping. You need to do is fire one time with the super Shotgun and then swap to the ballista and fire and then swap back. By doing this there will be no cool down. Only problem is ammo. So it's best to use Super Shotgun, Ballista, Rocket Launcher, and the Heavy Cannon with the Precision Bolt mod equipped. Don't use a mod on the rocket launcher. As for the other suit upgrades it's up to you. Faster Dash is really good. But the Ice drops upgrade on ice bomb is really good for health. The concussion on the frag grenade is great as well for stunning enemies. Almost all the grenade mods are amazing. Imo. The 2 best runes are the aerial mobility rune. And the one the gives cooldow reduction on equipment when killing with equipment.
Nice guide. I disagree about saving throw. It grants you complete immunity and slows down time for like 8 seconds or something. That is almost always enough time for me to set an enemy on fire, kill them, and collect the armor and health pickups to get back in the game.
The long range glory kill rune is at the bottom of my list. I prefer double dashing to stunned enemy and getting that glory kill. Dashes will reset after the kill and just dash to safety if need be.
I feel like blood fuel is better cause this game is all about moving and maneuvering but if you can’t get out, you’ll die more often if you can’t move fast enough
i use blood fueled for marauders and barons of hell, dazed and confused for mission challenges glory kills, and chrono strike for weak points, savagely and saving throw is worthless cuz savagely making glory kills fast, in my opinion glory kills being slow is better because it can helps you focus for a while, saving throw only works when you have no extra lives and maybe helps a little in ultra nightmare run
I have the quick glory kills rune at all times and I have no mechanical reason for doing so. It just keeps my adrenaline firing on all cylinders! Slow down time? I might fall asleep mid-jump : ) Also I love seek and destroy in 2016 but in eternal I feel like you have the mobility options to get there fast anyways.
I heavily disagree with the chrono strike, it seems just like a waste of a slot in my opinion. Also hot swapper is easily the best suit upgrade, always get it first to maximize damage output and versatility.
Great tips buddy. I put the game down after a couple of hours on launch day due to the total lack of ammo ( yes I was using the chainsaw). Definitely get the ammo upgrade first and power through to hour 3 when you get a couple upgrades. You will have more weapons and ammo but I have to say, when playing on Nightmare, the first few hours are very poorly balanced. You should acquire abilities earlier and more frequently. An ammo upgrade should happen in the first hour, actually ammo capacity should be increased across the board from the start.
Thanks! I think you'll like the next 2 videos if you found these useful. I think in trying to make this game different from the 2016 release the devs took it a step too far. Giving only 16 shots for the Shotgun at the start feels forced in my opinion. I think the whole loop of ammo, armor, health gets too repetitive as you progress through the game, and it even limits the variation in combat encounters since fodder enemies are omnipresent, even in what should be dramatic 1v1 fights.
@@monoespacial yes it's dumb and needs to be fixed aka reverted. In the E3 presentation supershotty has 30 rounds and consumed one bullet per shot. Which is a joke😂 compared to what they Gave us, EIGHT SHOTS USING TWO ROUNDS PER TRIGGER SQUEEZE. UTTER BULLSHIT
Iv reached the last level with only 1 suit upgrade. However im stuck at a point where iv lost 20+ extra lives and im considering fully upgrading the suit to see if it helps. Thanks for the video.
Go to Exultia (I believe that's the name) with some cheat codes and farm extra lives there. There is one extra life below you when you start and another one in the other side of the first bridge. You can get them, go back to campaign and reload and repeat to farm as fast as possible or run through the level to get 7. Definitely get more suit upgrades. Increasing your grenades, dashes and overall movement speed helps you survive quite a bit.
@@monoespacial Thanks a lot! I didn't even know that was a thing. So I load the level up, get the first extra lives, then just exit and reload and keep doing that until I have enough? You will have to forgive me... I'm not very good with games, as much as I do try.
What does the rune savagery do? I was under the impression that it puts enemies in the stagger state faster than when not equipped? Or does it literally mean that the animation for glory kills is faster?
The animation is faster, and since enemies move while you're doing the glory kill, the rune makes it so it's harder to get surrounded when you go in for the kill. Enemies get staggered when their health drops to a certain percentage I believe. This rune does not deal more damage or trigger that "sooner".
monoespacial ah, thanks very much. Do you by any chance know if there’s gonna be any meaty dlc? Do you think we could possibly get co op hoard mode? Or even something similar to raids like destiny? Both of the above would be bloody great.
@@grahamkelly8662 DLC is supposed to be fairly meaty in terms of single player content. Don't think I've seen mentions of coop stuff and certainly nothing raid-like.
I'm not sure what you mean. All "armor" is just cosmetic. The upgrades are always there. Are you not finding where the Knights that have upgrade points are?
monoespacial sorry I got mixed up with the upgrade. I was looking for the QuickDraw Belch, loot magnet, and the belch armor boost in the suit upgrade section lol. After watching the full video I realized I messed up haha. Thank you for information and the reply! 👍
@@TheZiiFamily Well... Given the fact that you need to perform glory kills (melee kills) I don't think you'll ever be to play this. There's plenty of gore they can't take out of the game unless they basically remake the entire game. I don't have a problem with the gore here because it's all very cartoons and inhuman. I agree with you on MK11 and recent MK games. I can't stand them, and I was a big fan of MK1 and MK2 back in the day.
I love this video but heavily disagree with saving throw. It is the PERFECT thing to get out of a bad situation. As long as you would die from the damage all attacks won’t hurt you. So you pull out the rocket launcher and spam that shit to get yourself in a place to heal (which all the enemies who died will drop health and armor is you bleached them). Other than that i agree with most of your points tho
Ape Jacob what do you mean? As long as you have an extra life and run out of health, the game takes one away from you without checkpoint restart. I’ve never run out of extra lives on any play through even on nightmare. The game gives you so many. The only exception to this is ultra nightmare which doesn’t have extra lives.
If y’all need hp in game and there are 2-4 or more fodder enemy’s near eachother, ice bomb them then use the flame belch then blood punch, thank me later. (Note: this only works with certain upgrades like the suit upgrade that makes blood punch drop health)
Lol one of the cheeses I found early on was to flame belch and freeze a pack of demons and spam rocket launcher remote detonator. Health and armour galore. You need ice-bomb-gives-health suit upgrade and remote detonation but if you save up it’s available early on and I was thrifty with upgrades at first.
For me it's gotta be air control, that one that keeps you alive after you die, and the one where the more equipment you use, the faster they recharge. Sometimes chrono strike too
I love quick glory kills rune, because it allows you to perform glory kills on multiple enemies while they're stunned and quickly regain health. It also helps against other enemies surrounding you while you perform glory kill.
This might actually be a good alternative to longer range glory kills because I think 70% of all times I died in the game was from getting stuck surrounded by enemies.
I think Saving throw is better at the start of the game, when your resources are a lot more limited. I would also say the value of the exploration set is dependent on individual play style. If one prefers not to redo a stage, then it makes sense to get as much out of it in one go as possible. If on the other hand, one is just trying to finish the stage and intends to come back to farm and what not, say with the Unlimited Ammo cheat code, then their value is less because one can take the time to hunt down every bonus anyway, though they might come in handy to make sure the level is fully completed.
Videos like this always amuse because they show how different approach to game player have. I personally picked entire top shelf of runes and never swapped it. Chrono breaks my flow of the game so much, I just fall out of rhythm and die or take a lot of unnecessary damage. I did run with faster ammunition but... ehh, cooldowns for me were good as they are, didn't see much reason to make them shorter. Seek and destroy best rune in the game tho, with understanding chainsaw teleportation and blood punch dash, it gives you insane amount of mobility. Adrenaline just makes you so fast its ridiculous, demons just cant land hit on you unless you run into it. And faster glory kills means you won't end up surrounded while you were busy ripping out Prowler's spine. All in all, amazing videos. Good game sense and straight to the point.
On nightmare, I'd personally say the most important suit perk is quick swap, then faster dash cooldown, and then a tie between either double frag grenade or the grenade falter since on that difficulty, the entire name of the game is faltering. That's one of the perks people really sleep on but also one of the most overpowered and important on nightmare.
5:48 saving throw, will absolutely help you out of a bad spot. I don’t know what this guy is talking about when he says if you’re already in a bad spot you’re gonna die anyways, this route will save you from dying multiple times in my opinion it is an absolute must if you were just starting
The video is very helpful but you can tell you're reading script it's like a robot reading one word at a time so odd to hear someone read out loud like this and sound so nervous 😂
Yeah, for the Sentinel Crystals, I tried following my M.O. from 2016 (Ammo => Health => Armor), but I eventually learned this was a mistake. Eternal is very differently balanced compared to 2016. Eternal makes you dependent on the Chainsaw to keep your ammo up, but it only auto-fills one pip, also forcing you to reserve fodder demons for replenishing almost all your resources. Because of this, I highly recommend activating Loot Magnet and Quickdraw Belch ASAP. None of the other Sentinel Crystal abilities are too important, so after that you max out your ammo first, then health, then armor as usual.
Because I don't plan on dying nor getting close to it so why would I pick a rune that only works when I fail? Chrono Strike allows you to pick off weak points with ease and as a bonus, it looks super cool.
If I had keyboard/mouse, I'd probably equip air control. Since I'm on console, I'm sticking with the Chrono rune. Blood fuel is one I've kept equipped since I enjoy the option of getting moar speed to get out of tight areas and quickly regrouping. Regardless, great video!
Tbh on my opinion blood fueled it the best of all the runes. The ability to move super fast is super useful. Also although it says glory kills it also counts chainsaw kills, buff totem kills, and I think crucible strikes as well. It’s way more useful than chrono strike to me
Matt Bowen bloodfueled is absolutely essential. I don’t know if UN can be beaten without it. People seem to overrate chrono strike. If your aim is good it’s a pointless rune.
Just got the game cuz its on a big sale rn on steam and I already got the long distance glory kill and air controll rune. Which should be my 3rd rune? (I'm on pc btw).
Slyofwar Kehoe yeah it’s hard but manageable. Ultra nightmare is a whole other story. I’ll have to play through the game multiple times on nightmare to even attempt ultra nightmare.
This game makes no sense in difficulty. The arena you named as particularly brutal was cleared by me in one try on ultra violence, while I had to tune it down to hurt me plenty on easier ones.
