Science fiction/Action adventure/Space. Created by Gene Roddenberry. Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley (Kirk, Spock and Dr. McCoy) - Norway Productions and Desilu Productions produced the series from September 1966 to December 1967. Paramount Television produced the show from January 1968 to June 1969. Star Trek aired on NBC from September 8, 1966, to June 3, 1969. It was first broadcast on September 6, 1966, on Canada's CTV network. Star Trek's Nielsen ratings while on NBC were low, and the network cancelled it after three seasons and 79 episodes. Several years later, the series became a hit in broadcast syndication, remaining so throughout the 1970s, achieving cult classic status and a developing influence on popular culture. Star Trek eventually spawned a franchise, consisting of eight television series, 13 feature films, and numerous books, games, and toys, and is now widely considered one of the most popular and influential television series of all time.

This part was absolutely exciting, especially with the music building to a crescendo and Scotty working like crazy to fix the transporter. You could tell Kirk was starting to get scared, and even Spock was getting anxious. The music totally made the scene! But before that, the scene with Decker making a suicide run in a shuttle down the machine's throat was a masterful bit of acting. It was one of those scenes you love/hate - hate because it was almost painful to watch this poor guilt-ridden captain trying to rectify his perceived mistake and realizing too late that he was going to die, and love because the actor did a fantastic job of conveying the absolute terror as he sees death approaching. You were quite literally on the edge of your seat, digging your nails into the cushion as you watched him approaching his doom. And again the frenetic trumpet music highlighted that desperate, terrified feeling. Funny, I was just thinking of this the other day!

@elizabethjordan5755
@elizabethjordan5755 3 года назад
@@jr6200 Kirk was always a risk taker. That was his appeal and strength as a captain. Decker was, too. But his resolve was motivated more by guilt. Decker left behind a son. I'm sure that must've added to his anxiety at the very end.
@ToyKingWonder
@ToyKingWonder 2 года назад
Yes, Decker agonized over his impending doom, but he was still very much a hero. He didn't try to reverse course, or back out. And if he had not succeeded, the Enterprise crew would not have seen the drop of energy, which led Kirk--also a hero--to try the unthinkable. Poor Decker had lost a great part of his mind to guilt, but still had the resolve to go down like he did. An excellent job of acting by Windom.
@elizabethjordan5755

"The Doomsday Machine" is a great episode from the original "Star Trek" TV series, but it is a shame that they screwed-up the countdown sequence at the end of the episode. From the moment when Kirk pushes the red button on the Constellation's Auxiliary Control Room's control panel to force the U.S.S Constellation's impulse engines to overload to the moment when the Constellation explodes just inside the "Doomsday Machine" is much longer than 30 seconds! The Constellation's impulse engines explode 1minute 24 seconds after Kirk pushes the red button on the Constellation's Auxiliary Control Room board panel. When Spock says, "Mr. Scott 20 seconds to detonation", it is actually only 5 seconds until the expiration of the 30 seconds since Kirk pushed the red button! When Sulu says, "Eight" (seconds) in the countdown, it has actually been a full minute since Kirk pushed the red button! And why didn't Kirk shield his eyes from the bright light inside the "Doomsday Machine" as the Constellation got very close to it, just like Commodore Decker in an earlier scene had to shield his eyes as the shuttlecraft entered the "Doomsday Machine"?

Constellation to its' doom is a great Spock moment on "Star Trek", but his best moment was in "Journey To Babel" in the great ,dramatic scene with his mother Amanda played superbly by Jane Wyatt) in which Amanda talks to him about his father Sarek needing a blood transfusion from Spock in order to live, and she says to Spock, "If you stand there and quote Starfleet rules and regulations and let your father die, then I'll hate you for the rest of my life"! Spock turns to her with an emotionally pained expression on his face and says again that he cannot help his father while the Enterprise is in danger and Amanda slaps him hard across the face and Spock walks to the closed door and touches it! What makes James T. Kirk such a likeable, admirable character is his great nobility and willingness to take great personal risks, including risking his own life, in situations which call for decisive and prompt action. He consistently demonstrates tremendous courage in the face of impending danger where others would shirk away from such danger. We root for him and his gallant crew because he and they always try to do what's right for the better good and benefit of all.

@kimdawcatgirl That's why Kirk was so popular. Every guy watching the show wanted to be him while every woman watching wanted to be seduced by him. He had implied sex offscreen with some of the female guest stars. Definitely with his Indian wife since she was pregnant when she died. Also with hothead who could seduce men with the touch of her tears. It was a Taming of the shrew type episode and it showed Kirk putting his boots on after apparently sleeping with her

This wonderfully dramatic ending in "The Doomsday Machine" never ever fails to raise the hair on the back of the viewer's neck! Every story writer, film maker and music composer who wants to write stories or music for TV or produce a dramatic story for TV, should watch this classic episode of "Star Trek" to see exactly how you write, film and score a dramatic, "edge of your seat" scene! This episode gets better and better with each viewing!

Agreed. They are much BETTER looking than anything else that they came out with. Simple, yet effective. Straight forward and honest, showed the persons rank within the ship alone with the logo of each different starship they belonged or was assigned to. The Original Star Trek series RULES MAN! It was a much BETTER show than anything else that followed it. What followed the Original Star Trek series was nothing but childish and stupid as well as cheesy. Never cared at all, nor liked that cheesy next generation stuff.
