I was an owner/operator for 20 years busted my ass to keep my equipment perfect. I averaged two DOT stops a month. Never received any citations. However the time spent equals about a day a month of lost time. A few years back when the screw a trucker week started I got stopped 27 times in on week. That’s when I decided it’s time to retire, again never received a citation for anything. Our government is worse than the mafia was.

Sounds like the typical bullshit, I went into a weigh station once the prick came out and said “whats wrong with your rig today?” I said “nothing sir it’s not even a month old” he said “pull it around here we’re going to find something wrong boy” That’s the attitude these pricks have. This crap has nothing to do with safety it’s just a tax on truckers. And this is an honest cop, I’ve heard stories about them backing off your slack adjusters and all kinds of crooked shit.

I have always hauled mainly used farm and construction equipment big ugly dirty a lot of officers would look at the load look at me and give a thumbs up I never really knew it they thought the load looked good or telling me to get the hell out of here because it was going to be to much work if they started with me I pretty much quit end of March 2018. When they started enforcing the eld not that I was worried about not being able to run legally but the fact I was not thought I could be trusted to keep my hours legal after 32 years hauling mainly oversized loads and never having any incidents of any being hurt in anyway. And it just keeps getting better pete butthole is going to ruin trucking totally within the next 2.5 years good luck to all of you that is left

Try the horse transport industry where 80+% are illegal haulers. They bypass every weight station, don’t care if their rigs are up to par as they are not being kept accountable. Give me a legal hauler any day and, as I am one, I’d rather be stopped if there was a fault found than risk my cargo due to a problem. I upkeep my rig to the very best of my mechanics (I have one for the truck and one for the trailer) ability. I go to the known strictest yearly safety location as I want them to find anything so I know and can get it fixed. Then try to get work when illegal haulers undercut by 1/2…..

@@secretsquirrel6718 Exactly! Probably most DOT cops are decent, but the minority are the memorable ones. I had one crawl all over the truck desperately looking for anything. Finally came out from under to tell me one brake was out of adjustment, needs to be under two inches and mine was right at two. I told him (and it was obvious) it had new shoes, drums, s-cams, and slack adjusters. His response? Wrote me two violations, one for brake out of adjustment and one for faulty equipment.

It's a no brainer why so many drivers have left the business. The average person interacts with a policeman maybe once in five years and sometimes longer but a truck driver can sometimes every day, every month, etc. Next time someone writes you a big ticket tell them how many meals he took away from the wife and kids by writing that ticket and hope he can sleep peaceably tonight.

Well now this just requires a long winded true California DOT trucker story. I picked up a load of rice that was going from Freeport, TX. to a place in California that was called "Senior Cleaners". I got a little nervous because the delivery was scheduled for a holiday weekend. I called ahead to confirm the date and time and was told to just "bring it". On the way into California, I was pulled into the inspection station near Lake Havasu and a bright eyed ambitious Chippie "babe" went through the rig with a fine tooth comb. After a thorough inspection, she wrote me a ticket for a "loose bolt" on the trailer air tank because she "felt a rattle and that's unsafe". While she was writing me a ticket, I grabbed my tools and climbed under the trailer to tighten up the bolt. When I found the "loose bolt" and tried to tighten it up, the bolt snapped off because it was already tight to the bolt shank. the problem was that the bolt shank was about a 16th inch too long so the nut was tight, but the bolt rattled slightly. After I got out from under the trailer, I went into the scale house and told Safety Suzie that what she wrote a ticket for turned out not to be a danger at all. However, as a result of her inspection and my attempt to correct this "unsafe condition", a less safe condition was created. I say "less safe" because there were 6 other bolts holding the air tank that were tight. Anyway, she said I could just go about my business and just have the problem repaired and submit proof to a CHP "office" before leaving California. There are several fascinating things that happened after this, which I won't go into unless somebody asks to hear it. If I told the whole story in one entry, it would be just TOO long winded. Even for a road man!
@peteheyde7999
@peteheyde7999 2 года назад
Thanks so much for the "Likes"! So now, by popular demand, as Paul Harvey used to say is "THE REST OF THE STORY" After the goddess of the coops released me to my own recognisance, drove along on my merry way to Seinior Cleaners to deliver my rice. Upon arrival, I quickly determined that Senior Cleaners was not just any warehouse. It was a food co-op that takes in food products from wherever they can get them and distributes them to needy people all along the West Coast. And my forklift driver wasn't just just any unloader. He was an 82 year old volunteer that worked with many other volunteers (most, but not all, elderly) to help solve a real problem with a real solution. I got the whole story about Senior Cleaners and I felt honored to be one of the drivers that delivered there and I had a wonderful conversation with the forklift driver. By the way, he had me unloaded in about 20 minutes and put the "union" forkers to shame, imagine that! I was then instructed to go to Heyward, CA to a chemical company (perhaps Olin Hunt) but I forget. And pick up a full load of hazmat coming back east. At the time, I was driving for TRL. TRL had a policy that drivers had to pay to have their trucks washed UNLESS they were hauling hazmat in California. WELL...Little Sisters in Barstow gave me the super deluxe right down to polished lug nuts special, and I was ridin and glidin with a smile! So now I know I have a bright and shiny "unsafe" truck that I need to think about repairing before I load the chemicals and blow up the world. I stopped at a Home Depot, bought a couple bucks worth of hardware and repaired the dangerous dangling air tank in about 10 minutes. That returned my killer truck to safety, but there was still a matter of getting the CHP to sign off on the repairs. Being the shrewd trucker that I was, I figured I'd just slide into a local CHP office, have them look at it, sign off and I'd load my chemicals...well. The local chippies told me in no uncertain terms that they couldn't check me even if they wanted to. I'd have to get that done at a certified vehicle inspection station (scale house) and that was the only way to get the situation fixed. I went in and got fully loaded with all my hazmat and loaded everything as if I was going to have the cargo gone through with a fine tooth comb. Locked, blocked, secured. Nothing was going anywhere it wasn't supposed to be. I applied all my placards (corrosive, flammable, dangerous, and maybe a couple more) and climbed out onto the Nimitz Freeway. With just my good luck, and everyone elses, as it turned out, the coops were open. I crossed the scale and got the green light. Instead of rolling back out on the highway, I pulled around in back and took my documentation inside to get signed off on my heinous violation. Wouldn't you know it, but there was just 1 guy running the scales, and he had to close the scales to inspect my truck. I never heard anything, but I'm quite sure that the long line of trucks waiting to be weighed were quite upset at having to bypass the scales. Anyway the DOT guy and me walk out of the scalehouse and I point to the only truck on the lot. Mind you, he's just outside of the scalehouse and the truck is parked 150 feet away with the trailer doors facing the officer, He tells me to go break the seal and open the doors. If I'm still standing, he'll come over and check me out. I did, and he did. Never looking at the air tank or any other paperwork except the original citation. He did tell me that I did a fantastic job securing the load. As I pulled back out onto the freeway, I couldn't help but feeling blessed. I saved California from almost certain disaster, helped feed the hungry and saved a couple hundred truckers from the WRATH of the DOT! It don't get much better than that!

These portable scales are trash as far as i have heard from my father (30+ years as trucker) and other's who do this all year. My old man got a ticket for being over 3 tons over weight limits per his permits for that load (50 ton excavator) and drove 5 kilometers to a scale that gets checked regularly and per those scales he was well under. Ended up with a lawsuit and now the police who are sent to check the trucks can only use them to determine if they have to send you to a proper truck scale or not, and are unable to give tickets from them (or were the last time he met them)

Some of the DOT cops are just simply being a jerk, I've seen them in CA set up right at the exit of the rail yard where everyone picks up their load, which ends up many of them are getting overweight ticket, you don't have any way to scale it inside and especially in CA, you can only do 40s on the tandems which makes a lot of loads coming from the east overweight in CA, they don't even let you go and scale it...

Federalsburg MD...a hotdog manufacturing plant has/had no scale on site. Pull out the driveway turn right n 1/2 mile to the stop sign to get onto highway sat 4 cops n all would pull over trucks coming from the plant n issue overweight tickets. Got 4 in one month. 5th time going in i told them to half load the trailer or im leaving no load. Was told they no longer max loads n only load 30K or less. That plant cost me $1300 in tickets. This was in 1999. Never went back as I took n filed a claim on them n the boss. I quit before i filed claims.

Mike if its calibration is set accurately every 6 months for a check then yes a air weigh gauge can be trusted. Keep in mind the ones on a tractor are just for it. The trailer needs a separate system. Grain hoppers have gauges n systems on them. On other trailers the system has to be factory or aftermarket added. Hope this helps.

They CAN do an inspection, BUT, you should read that little book that every company is supposed to give you. IF NOT ASK FOR ONE. IF YOU ARE AN OWNER, BUY ONE. You, even tho you ARE A DRIVER, have rights. 1. You ONLY HAVE TO SHOW YOU HAVE A LOGBOOK, THEY MUST ASK FOR IT SPECIFICALLY FOR YOU TO TURN IT OVER TO THEM. 2. NEVER PUSH ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR, JUST ABOUT EVERY BRAKE SYSTEM WILL GO OUT OF ADJUSTMENT WITH 120 PSI AIR APPLIED, DOT HAS A TOOL TO DO THIS, TELL THEM TO USE IT. 3. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HELP THEM AS IT GOES AGAINST YOUR 5TH AMENDMENT RIGHT TO NOT INCRIMINATE YOURSELF. 4. IT IS ILLEGAL TO DELAY A INTERSTATE SHIPMENT MORE THAN 30 MINUTES, IF THEY HAVE NOT FOUND ANYTHING INSIDE OF 30 MINUTES FROM THE TIME YOU PARK, LET THEM KNOW THAT IF YOU ARE DELAYED ANY LONGER YOU WILL CALL THE FEDERAL MARSHALS, BECAUSE AFTER 30 MINUTES, IF THEY HAVE NOT FOUND ANYTHING, THEY MUST LET YOU GO. 5. AS A PROFESSIONAL DRIVER, YOU DO HAVE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS PERTAINING TO THE TRUCK, TRAILER, AND THE LOAD, EVERYTHING ELSE SHUT HTHE HELL UP, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT, USE IT!! I USED THESE AT EVERY DOT INSPECTION, NEVER GOT A TICKET FOR THE TRUCK EITHER. I DID GET A COUPLE OF SPEEDING TICKETS, ONE IN ILLINOIS, THE OTHER IN OREGON.
