Came for the string review stayed for the music. You two sound wonderful. Instead of wanting to buy new strings I want to go practice. Thank you!

The Galli is clearer in the low end, and has more of a pure sound as someone mentioned. Great playing!

Very interesting alternative. If you have time I would love to hear you bowing the Gallis too. Then we would know how they work as hybrid strings. If you have the time, that is.

Very nice editing job! I like the color-coding. I thought the Galli strings sounded a bit more “present” than the old set. Of course, that might have been a matter of relative freshness. The old (“olive-green”) set sounded a bit fuller in the bottom than the Galli strings in my AirPods. But the Gallis sound nice and “thumpy” indeed. I think they could be a viable alternative.

Thank you Dave! Yes, I also feel that the old set has a fuller bottom. Interestingly though, my pianist found the Gallis to have a fuller bottom. The thing that occurs to me most is that the Gallis are very present and "sustainy" in the phase directly after the attack. That's nice for some stuff, but for swing music I prefer when the tone gets more "discreet" after the attack.

First of all cudos to both of you for playing wonderful versions of these standards! 😉 As to the strings, they're very close in sound, and in my opinion, the Galli set "sings" a bit more in the lower register, which I like, but can mud up too much in a band setting. Also, the gut set sounds more pleasing in the higher register. According to my own taste, which is in between a more modern and the old 50s 'thumpy' sound. 😅 But all that might change with time, as strings change in character with time, sometimes even to the better. 🤓 But they all sound a lot better than my sets of steel strings, and I'm sure that's normal. 🤔 Thank you for sharing! 😊

For what it's worth. My favorite video of yours is the demonstration of the Evah Pirazzi Slap/Gold set. As far as your goal of finding a synthetic core string that emulates gut, the Evah Slap/Golds may be worth revisiting. I'm currently using the regular Evahs but I may give the Evah Golds another try myself.

In the last zwo weeks I had the opportunity to play the Galli BSN900 with Standard (normal) tension. They are very smooth to play, even softer as my Oliv D & G und Evahs E & A soft. But after replacing the Gallis with the Evahs/Olivs I realized within a few tones that I like the sound of Evah/Olivs a lot more, they sound more present and defined.

Very nice! I guess it depends on how the different strings feel. Soundwise they seem to have the same vibe.The Galli strings sound fresher but that's because they are... ;-)

Hi Hervé. The Galli BSN900 light has a little more midrange and lacks low frequency on the Gamba. But I’d bet the Galli BSN900 light would definitely sound better on the violin corner Bass. I think the violin Bass has a better graduation thickness on the top which I believe is more deeper on the lower frequency than the Gamba. Great video and excellent music. P.S. I ordered EFRANO Elite gut with E, A wound. I watched you demonstrate it on your video a few nights ago. Very impressive indeed. At least I have one Bass with steel strings and the other Bass with gut, and I’m sure it’ll cover most of my genres in music. Thanks, Hervé, keep up the great work. Sincerely, Pearse from Ireland 🇮🇪👍

Bonjour Harve. I enjoyed hearing your take on these Galli E900 light gauge strings. I've never heard of them before, and am now intrigued, as your video has piqued my interest. Just a few hours ago, I switched my string set from Evah Pirazzi to the Perpetual set. I have noticed a difference in the presence of punch, clarity and a more open resonance (if that makes sense). Not to mention, feel-wise, the Perpetuals are not as resistant as the Evahs. So now upon hearing these Gallis again, I'm wondering how they would sound compared to the Perpetuals(?) For what I do with playing different styles, I need all the flexibility a string set would allow me to have, especially when certain moments call for arco. And while Evahs can almost give me that, the diameter doesn't always allow for that flexibility and bounce. Now I ask: who sells Galli strings? Thanks for the video.

A very nice review as usual. And hard to decide which set sounds better. I like the Olivs a bit more, because they sound warmer to me... Ich replaced them with Pirastro Perpetuals, but I planned to put the Oliv D ang G again on my bass. Would be interesteing to hear the Gallis vs. Eva Pirazzi. Dankeschön.

Yes the Galli have similarities with the Evahs. I have the feeling that the Gallis are a little closer to the "gut thing" than the Evahs. But I should do a test to check if it is true.

@@stringmatrix Excellent playing, as always ! - I’d definitely like to hear a comparison between the Galli’s and EP Weich’s. To me the sound quite similar, although the Galli’s also sounds a little softer maybe? What’s the tension of the Galli Lights?

Hello Hervé, like every time, thank you for your videos !! I have a similar set (Oliv but with Spirocore light for E and A) and it's great, but I would really like to try the Gallistrings. I just don't find this light gauge set on their site, are they already on the market ? Mathieu.

The Galli strings have a nice pure tone, whereas the guts are more thumpy. Both sound good! Hard to tell on the video, but the Gallis also seem to respond faster than the guts?
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix Год назад
Exactly. Yes, pure smooth tone vs. more complex tone, both directions can be interesting. Yes in some way the Gallis respond very fast.

Super! Thank you so much for your music and for your incredible job about the strings comparison! May I ask you if there is a big difference in diameter between the oliv G and the galli G? I love that kind of thickness that Oliv G has. Some weeks ago, just to try, I went back to evah pirazzi G string but I realized I missed the Oliv diameter too much. Thanks!
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix Год назад
Hi! The Galli is thinner. I hear you! I also love the Oliv G, not only the sound but also the feel of the big diameter. I think the Galli has a similar diameter as the Evah P.

IMHO, the attack of the Gallis is a bit harsh. And the sustain lacks a certain "roundness" and warmth. I clearly prefer the gut strings. However, the Gallis come closer to gut than anything else I've heard so far (except maybe the gut-a-like which are too dark IMO). Some really beautiful music that you play im this video. Hoping for a another duo CD!

I’m mainly an arco bassist. I have spirocore E+A medium tension and Belcanto D+G medium as well on my bass currently. They combo works well for practicing arco and the tension is suitable when I’m playing pizzicato for my blue grass band. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this string combo!

So is one bass a round back and the other a flat back? I'm thinking it might be interesting to see how the Galli strings sound after a few months. Both are nice but I think I like the older set on the violin shaped bass better but it might be a sound profile from the instrument that is the cause of this .... time for another set of Galli stings on both basses? (Sorry this is going to cost a fortune!) :-)
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix Год назад
Yes exactly. The "Galli Bass" is a flatback Höfner from around 2013. The "Oliv/Wraps" bass (Hungarian from around 2004) is slightly bigger and has a round back. But as I commented, I also had the two sets "the other way around" on the two basses, and the tone qualities of the the strings remained similar to the way you hear it on the video.

@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix Год назад
Yes there is a clear similarity to the sound of Evahs. But I have the feeling that the Gallis have a little more punch and have a more "concrete" tone center (less transparent, more fundamental - difficult to put in words).

@@PepeOblivion1234 I just did some new tests and found out that the BSN900 light sound and feel extremely similar to the Evah Pirazzi light (green envelope). So no, I wasn't talking about the Evah slaps which sound darker, shorter in sustain and punchier. It would be great if there were more sets on the market that go in the direction of the Evah Slaps.
