If you consolidate your loans do you lose credit toward forgiveness? My loans are 30-35 years old and still have not been forgiven. Some years were in default and some years in repayment. Many people with more recent loans got forgiven but mine were not.

I wonder about that too.

I believe...they have changed this now... that you won't lose the progress. But if you've been paying 30-35 years... I didn't consolidate all these years, not because of losing the progress, but because I currently am not required to pay and I wanted to be able to direct payments to specific loans. At this point I'm expecting a big tax bill no matter when it's forgiven. But I can't afford to opt out of my IBR due to being on disability. I'd been given incorrect information about disability forgiveness so... I am screwed no matter what it seems.

Is it possible they do away with save altogether?

I very much agree. We did double consolidation with our Parent Plus Loan and the lower monthly payment helps so much. If you are a parent with huge patent plus loan- I recommend you work with this lawyer (Tate) to help you go through this process - it is easier to do this with someone who knows what they are doing. I understand how overwhelming this student loan situation is. Glad this website gives good information

I placed in forbearance because the federal govt but a stay on Department of Education in my state on July 18 2024. What could that cause?

I was told today that all consolidations are on hold until a decision is made about SAVE. Is that correct? I mailed my first round 2 months ago😢

That’s not my experience. They’re still processing our clients’ applications.

That's what's UP! 🔥 You continue to do God's work with these vids! Great tips for everyone. I'm still holding out hope for my 25+ years IBR forgiveness in the coming weeks. We can do it, y'all! THANK YOU, @stanleytate !

It sucks that without SAVE there is no longer an interest subsidy 😟

For real, I honestly don’t blame people for being against straight forgiveness. The interest subsidy is needed though.

Sounds like your loans are private, not federal.
