IMO, the Merkur 37C would be the best choice mainly due to costs and they're easier to obtain. While Ikon is a really good razor with exceptional quality and all, the price tag is a budget killer. Not everyone (that includes me) can afford a razor that easily costs triple digits. The vintage razors that are availible can vary in both condition and costs and more often than not, they often need repairs before they can be used and sometimes they can't always be repaired. So for me the Merkur 37C won. Now for those that want a slant with a longer handle, the 39C sledge Hammer will be your best choice.

Why do people always seem so surprised that a razorr shaves so easily through a three-day-beard? The longer the stubble, the easier they shave. The shorter the stubble, the harder they shave. So the real challenge is in shaving short stubble.

@KingofWisdom

That's not necessarily true, a mild razor won't shave through really long stubble and get you down to skin level in one pass. Shaving shorter stubble is more just a test of your technique, because you have to really watch your pressure.

I'm new to the whole thing and im facing a dilemma.. shave frequently or suffer and wait for a longer growth for a satisfying shave :/
@KingofWisdom
@KingofWisdom 5 лет назад
@@dunhill919 I went through some of that myself. What helped me the most was mapping out the grain of my beard. For years I was shaving straight down on my neck even though in some areas I was shaving against the grain. I don't even shave ATG anymore because my skin/beard combo is too sensitive (I've tried a Slim Adjustable on a 1, ATG shaving never feels good to me). The rest of it is master your technique, have a light touch and don't try to stretch out too many uses on a single blade.

Great video! I bought the 37C some time ago, maybe a year ago, and it gives me great shaves. I have been using other razors for a few months and came back to it recently and it really is close and comfortable. I had forgotten how great it is. I believe the twist it gives the blade makes the edge more rigid and adds to its effectiveness in cutting the hairs.

I have the Merkur I use with a Feather blade but I find the handle is a bit short for me as I limited movement in my right arm to get to the other side. I agree with the last comment that a longer growth shaves off better than a small growth.

I've been experimenting with my Merkur 39C slant which is a longer handled version of the 37C slant that Merkur offers. I've found that with my European beard and sensitive skin, that a relatively sharp blade in the heavy 39C will deliver a great shave on the face region if you allow the weight of the razor to do the shaving. I will get an aggressive shave and razor burn in the neck region if I use a left to right motion instead of a bottom-up motion on my neck, though. It's my misfortune that the grain of my beard grows sideways on my neck requiring me to run the razor from my right to my left in order to get rid of any stubble after one or two passes. I originally bought the slant style hoping to avoid those sideways neck passes, but I didn't get the desired results. The weight of this razor is a bit on the heavy side, too, and doesn't allow me to have the ability to feel its cutting action. A lighter in weight razor such as the Merkur 20C Straight allows me to feel that it's either still cutting or not and is better suited for my weird growing whiskers on my neck. For those not experienced with a slant type of razor, I advise that caution be used around your neck and to allow for the weight of the razor, if it's metal like a 37C or 39C, to apply the required pressure on your beard until your technique is established. I wouldn't be in a hurry with this type of razor, either. They are very efficient and sometimes maybe a little too efficient for me.

THAT HOPRESS RAZOR ???? That's the one I just bought at the flea market....Razor, case & 2 Razor storage all Srinless and case is Velour lined. My Razor is handle shows bad wear and the Nichol?is pealing towards the top of the handle and bottom...the head/comb and internal screw is good. The only marking I CAN SEE IS ON THE CASE..."MADE IN WESTERN GERMANY". I cleaned it and used it.....WOW what a smooth non-tugging first pass shave that was on my barb wire beard. To bad mine needs replated.

Felt bad using it LOL..Smoked my skin first up but I think I need to rethink my lather and the angle of attack on my skin. Love it anyway ...thanks bunches!

Great video Matt ! I enjoyed it a lot as I had 2 of the 3 razors in this video. Are you sure the Ikon DLC slant is only off by a "hair" ? sorry that was a weak joke. Seriously though..... I am sure you are familiar with the Lutz slant as well which is another vintage 1930's era slant, but is what many call a "true" slant. I never understood this term though the Lutz is multi gapped on different sides as well as scalloped on the bar. I find the Lutz to be the most aggressive yet forgiving slant I own, can you shed any light on what people mean by a "true" slant, and what made the Lutz so different ? Just as an FYI I have the same Hoffritz and the 37C as you in the video.....you can hear how that Ikon is just cutting so aggressively ! I thought I was listening to a SE or, a straight razor with that audio feedback ! Again great video !

They did a mold change in 2016 I heard. You know if you have the old one because there is some flashing in the baseplate teeth. Also there's other differences but unless you have them to compare side by side that will tell you which you have. Obviously if you bought it 2015 or before or 2017 or after you almost guaranteed have either the old or the new, but if you got one in 2016 then you could have gotten either because of the old pushing through the supply chain.

I can also say after using the Merkur 37C slant for the last 5 months that a Feather blade is quite mild and NOT as aggressive as people make it out to be either. In fact it was almost forgiving which shocked me. I can't use a Feather DE blade in my Edwin Jagger DE 89 because they tear me all to pieces. I get a complete opposite effect when using my Merkur 37C slant. I also noticed that the blades don't last as long in a slant as they would with other razors.

I have 2 safety razors at the moment: lord l6 and Parker 24c. So I have 1 close comb and 1 open comb. So I was wondering if a slant is worth adding to my collection? I have heard the merkur razors are suppose to be to mild.

Asad the great its is worth adding a slant if you can afford it. its very efficient as it does in one pass what standard mild razors do in two passes. looks cool too.

@skimz2012
@skimz2012 5 лет назад
Kberry1249 sal tbh no, I’d stick to a closed comb head “no slant” and a very good knurling on the handle. However once you can have a nice fluent shave every time, then maybe consider the murker. Parker also makes a decent semi slant head razor aswell. Wish it was included in this comparison but good video to give you an idea of what your looking for.

@snakeman9902

This may sound like a stupid question but if you are using the same blades, how can one safety razor cut better than the other?
@TheAndreastt1
@TheAndreastt1 8 лет назад
+Snakeman There are a lot of factors; one razor might be more slanted than another (more efficient shave), blade exposure and how much space there is in the razor between the bottom plate and the top plate (bigger gap = more aggressive). The weight of the razor will also contribute to the performance of the razor (the heavier, the easier it shaves the hairs off). An open comb razor is also more efficient than one with a straight safety bar, since the blade in an open comb razor has more direct access to the skin and because it doesn't get filled up with hair and lather as quickly as a straight safety bar razor does.
@snakeman9902
@snakeman9902 8 лет назад
***** Thank you very much for your reply, I have one safety razor but never looked into the effectiveness of each one as I usually use straight razor or cartridges can you recommend any good safety's without the expense? Or is it a case of you get what you pay for?
@TheAndreastt1
@TheAndreastt1 8 лет назад
+Snakeman Merkur makes great razors at a reasonable price and so does Edwin Jagger. Merkur has more variety (straight bar, slant, open comb, adjustable) but Edwin Jagger razors have a better chrome finish overall. The Merkur 34c was the first safety razor I bought and it is a great performer (it is (I think) the most popular safety razor in the world). It is not too mild nor too aggressive. But if you care about aesthetics, the Edwin Jagger DE89 is a better choice. Edwin Jagger makes a lot of different handles for their razors - rubber coated, lined, smooth etc. but they all have the same head design which is not very aggressive and thus a great first razor to buy.

Then lather it right before you shave and maybe try a tad more water to the lather.. It's drying out which can be a issue.. Just try either a slightly watery lather or just lather it before you shave it..

Matt i'm telling you. If you consider a rapira blade near the Feather. Then you don't have coarse whiskers at all. I have short and hard stubble that always stand upright. Only truly sharp blades work for me. I shaved today with Merkur 37c and rapira. What a blunt blade. It can't cut my hair even in slant. This blade so blunt that i have to stop after second pass. I was really afraid to use this blunt piece of metal agains the grain. Yes it glides over the skin freely but it can't cut at all! Terrible blade.

I always hated shaving until I got my first double edge razor. It took something that I really hated into an enjoyable art form. It's a funny cult to be part of. You really don't need any of the fancy soaps or brushes. I never use them (but I really would like to). Just get some cheap shaving cream and aftershave. Learn to use the razor and you'll want to shave all the time. I would like to try soaps and new creams. I might order some online. BTW: Buy Astra blades if your face isn't too sensitive. Persona blades are great but a bit too sharp for me. It's not name brand fanboyism.. It's the honest to God truth.
